Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster tournament took a hiatus during the pandemic as movie theatres closed for the majority of 2020-2021 and theatrical day-and-date titles on both the big screen and studio’s respective streaming platforms became more prevalent. Coming back from that pandemical brink, the motion picture studies have largely returned to their theatrical release models and the downstream monies they can bring. Not to mention their power in launching IPs around the world with big global marketing campaigns. When it comes to evaluating the financial performance of top movies, it isn’t about what a film grosses at the box office. The true tale is told when production budgets, P&a, talent participations and other costs collide with box office grosses, and ancillary revenues from VOD to DVD and TV. To get close to that mysterious end of the equation, Deadline is repeating our Most Valuable Blockbuster tournament...

Writer/director Parker Finn’s horror film Smile (read our review Here, watch the movie Here) was originally intended to be released through the Paramount Plus streaming service, but it scored so highly at a test screening that the decision was made to give it a theatrical release. That decision really paid off, as the film earned over $200 million at the global box office. Of course, Paramount is hoping for a Smile sequel now – and they might get one soon, as Finn has just signed a multiyear first-look deal with the studio.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, as part of this deal Finn is expected to write, produce and direct features in the horror genre. The studio would love a Smile sequel but it’s not clear what Finn’s next movie will be.
Paramount president and CEO Brian Robbins provided the following statement: “Smile’s breakthrough success is a...

Former DC Films head Walter Hamada has kicked off the new year with the launch of his new production banner, 18hz Productions, and is making key hires.
Nathan Samdahl, the former Paramount executive who was instrumental in making the horror hit Smile, will act as the company’s senior vp, while Nick Romano has been tapped as creative executive.
Hamada transitioned to the world of producing late last year after more than 15 years in the studio trenches of Warner Bros. and New Line, overseeing the making of horror and superhero movies such as It and Aquaman. In November, his fledgling company signed an exclusive, multi-year production deal with Paramount to spearhead the studio’s mainstream horror movies. It has the goal of releasing several low-to mid-budget films per year across theatrical and streaming.

Writer/director Parker Finn’s horror film Smile left the door wide open for a sequel – and given that the Paramount release earned over 200 million at the global box office, you have to imagine that the studio has already been asking for a sequel. During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Finn confirmed that Smile was originally going to skip theatres and go right to Paramount+ until it scored well at a test screening, and discussed how he would approach making a sequel. If one were to be made.
When asked if he has thought about making a Smile sequel that picks up right where the first movie left off, Finn said, “I do think that there is still a lot of interesting stuff to explore in the world of Smile. There certainly are stones that I left unturned by design. And then there are other things that I, at one point or another,...

Having earned over 200 million at the global box office, writer/director Parker Finn’s horror film Smile has now been given a digital release and is also available to watch on the Paramount+ streaming service in the US and Canada. With a new stage of release comes a new piece of promotion, as Paramount has unveiled a featurette that looks into the casting of Sosie Bacon (Charlie Says) as the film’s heroine. That featurette, which has a running time just under 2 minutes, can be seen at the bottom of this article.
Smile is based on Finn’s short film Laura Hasn’t Slept, which won the Special Jury Recognition Prize in SXSW’s Midnight Short category. Caitlin Stasey (Neighbours) played the title character in that short, and it seems like she might be reprising the role in Smile (briefly, judging by the marketing), making this a follow-up of sorts.

Paramount Players will be giving writer/director Parker Finn’s horror film Smile a theatrical release on September 30th, and with that date just a few weeks away a featurette has arrived online to give us a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the film. You can check it out in the embed above.
Finn and cast members Sosie Bacon (Charlie Says), Kal Penn (the Harold & Kumar movies), Kyle Gallner (Red State), and Jessie T. Usher (The Boys) are interviewed in the featurette, and along the way Finn promises that nothing can prepare you for what’s going to happen in his movie, which he wanted to feel “like an escalating nightmare”. The featurette definitely did its job as far as I’m concerned, because I’m more interested in Smile now than I was before watching it.

Paramount Players has optioned eight novels from author Gregg Hurwitz’s “Marked Man” series of books, with plans to adapt them for a series of feature films.
The division of the ViacomCBS-owned studio, run by Jeremy Kramer, is eyeing lower budgets for the contemporary noir thrillers and specifically looking for diverse and perhaps first-time writers and directors to create the world.
Hurwitz is the bestselling author of “Orphan X” and will produce the films alongside Emmy winner Scott Frank, producer of Netflix’s “The Queen’s Gambit.” The latter brought the books to the studio. While not connected by a central character, Hurwitz’s novels are among the most praised of the pot-boiler genre — usually invoking heinous crimes or geopolitical intrigue. The film adaptations are said to be connected thematically.
Full titles being optioned include “Do No Harm,” “The Crime Writer,” “Trust No One,” “They’re Watching,” “You’re Next,” “The Survivor,...
