Be afraid, be very afraid: Finnish mystery thriller “Icebreaker” has just revealed exclusive first-look photos.
Set on a stranded icebreaker, it sees coast guard Sanna Tanner (Jessica Grabowsky) leading a rescue team. She comes across a group of survivors – and a frozen body – but over the course of six days, crew members start to disappear. And a vindictive spirit might have something to do with it.
“Icebreakers’” backers have shared a set of first-look stills in exclusivity with Variety.
Created by Mia Ylönen, who exec produces with Aleksi Bardy following their collaboration on “Codename: Annika,” “Icebreaker” is produced by Helsinki-filmi, an independent subsidiary of Aurora Studios.
Commissioned by Elisa Viihde and distributed by About Premium Content (Apc), the series boasts an impressive cast, with “Border” lead Eero Milonoff and “Compartment No. 6’s” Seidi Haarla joined by Mikko Leppilampi, Karim Rapatti, Roderick Kabanga or Johannes Holopainen.

Paris-based Apc (About Premium Content) has acquired world sales rights on the six-part Finnish thriller “A Good Family,” currently filming in Estonia before moving back to Finland.
The high-end drama about love, marriage and parenthood is based on Finnish author and screenwriter Petri Karra’s 2019 novel “The Dark Light” (“Musta Valo”). The creative team takes in creator/producer Minna Virtanen, creator/writer Antti Pesonen and helmer Pete Riski, behind the crime show “Bullets,” which won the MIPDrama Buyers’ Coup de Coeur award in 2018 and launched on Walter Presents in the U.K. in January.
Virtanen said she started collaborating with Karra on the TV show concept even before his novel was published. Then Pesonen’s screenplay was polished by script editors Matti Laine (“The Paradise”) and Charlotte Lesche.

“Bullets,” a Finnish, German and Belgian co-production from creator-producer Minna Virtanen and Antti Pesonen, held its market premiere screening on Monday at Berlin’s Drama Series Days, the TV component of the European Film Market.
In the series, ex-terrorist Madina Taburova, presumed to be dead, emerges in Helsinki looking for political asylum. Intelligence agent Mari Saari adapts a false identity and attempts to befriend Madina, as a means of keeping tabs on the once-dangerous woman. Krista Kosonen (“Blade Runner 2049”) and Sibel Kekilli (“Game of Thrones”) play the two main characters.
Virtanen and Pesonen spent five years co-writing and developing “Bullets.” The series is produced by Finland’s Vertigo Production, and co-produced by Germany’s Nadcon Film and Belgium’s Lunanime/ Lumière, and thanks to support from the Finnish tax incentive system, the show’s entire €5 million ($5.65 million) was in place before shooting began. TV show newcomer Pete Riski directed the series’ 10 episodes.

Commercialism has been a part of the film industry for a very long time. It will continue to be an active part of the film industry until the day comes when there’s no longer a film industry. Movies are made to make money, that’s pretty much a given. Occasionally a movie can have its cake and eat it too; it can be a completely commercial product and still be a fine artistic enterprise as well.
Dark Floors is an example of commercialism gone wrong. It would be wrong to call it Pete Riski’s film, because it’s more the film of the death metal group Lordi than it is that of the Finnish born director. This film came about to cash in on the popularity of Lordi and to try to tap into the apparently...

I'm not sure how the heavy metal and horror movie connection started but it's a match made in hell. The two go together like chocolate and peanut butter. It's a natural pairing. Alice Cooper had been combining Grand Guignol stage theatrics with live music since the 70's. Blue Oyster Cult wound horror and science fictions themes into their lyrics. Black Sabbath took their name from a Mario Bava movie yet the movies and the music maintained a safe distance from one another until heavy metal became the undisputed king of album sales in the mid to late 80's. The two seemed to officially become bed mates in 1986 with Friday the 13th Part 6 when the very same and this time very crazy Alice Cooper provided the synth happy track "He's back! (The Man Behind The Mask)" to the soundtrack. Before you knew it, Dokken was writing the theme song to my...

Dark Floors is another one of the Ghost House Underground films recently released by Lionsgate. The film is a project of the Finnish metal band “Lordi” (think Gwar without the sense of humor) who created the idea and also play roles in the film. It’s touted as being the most expensive horror movie ever produced in Finland which says volumes about the quality of horror films produced there. Certainly the film offers an interesting plot as a group of people in a hospital become trapped in an elevator. Once the doors finally open, the hospital is completely deserted, or so it seems at first. The group will soon find that demonic forces have been unleashed, stalking and killing everything in their path.
Unfortunately a decent concept is about the best the film offers. The director liberally borrows the film’s look from Silent Hill as the hospital becomes decayed...

Earlier today at Fantastic Fest the producer of the upcomign horror comedy Reykjavik Whale Watching Massacre - starring Texas Chainsaw Massacre‘s Kane Hodder - waved me over to show a reel of footage of the upcoming film. The verdict? There was very little in the way of blood or gore shots in the footage shown - no surprise there as the film just finished shooting and will need to go through post before a lot of that stuff is ready - but what was included looked very impressive. The film shares a DP with Pete Riski’s Dark Floors, which is an impeccably shot film, and the look is outstanding. Energy seemed good, the cast engaging and I’m excited to see more. Expect more stills soon but in the meantime hit the link below to see the very first released still from the picture.

Yes, the fear is here. Dark Floors - the Finnish horror film conceived and created as a starring vehicle for Finnish metal act Lordi - just hit screens in its native country and is making its market debut here in Berlin. The early teasers were surprisingly effective, making it very clear that Lordi weren’t aiming for a campy cheese fest with this but were rather trying their hand and putting together a legitimate horror film, while also showcasing the sure hand of director Pete Riski behind the camera, and those teasers have been borne out in the finished film. Not a gore fest by any means - it would likely get a PG-13 rating in the Us - the film is a tightly plotted, exceptionally well shot thrill ride that sets the rules of its world very early on, lets the audience know what to expect and then executes flawlessly.
