The intrigue over Victoria Alonso’s abrupt exit from Marvel continues.
On March 24, THR exclusively reported that Disney fired Alonso for breach of contract, due to her work on the Oscar-nominated feature Argentina, 1985, which was made by Amazon. Last week, Disney indicated the dismissal was due to “an indisputable breach of contract and a direct violation of company policy.”
Alonso, through attorney Patty Glaser, pushed back at this explanation for the firing, saying in a statement at the time, “Victoria, a gay Latina who had the courage to criticize Disney, was silenced. Then she was terminated when she refused to do something she believed was reprehensible.”
Some insiders at Disney believe the “reprehensible” act referenced by Glaser was a request to censor gay Pride references in the latest Ant-Man movie for the Kuwait market, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.

If I were a decade and a half younger, I'd probably say something along the lines of filmmaker David Lowery having all hits and absolutely no misses throughout his brilliant directing career to this point. But because I'm not and my job ostensibly requires that I find a semi-intelligent way of stringing words together to make insightful points, I'll just point out that between 2016's "Pete's Dragon", the soulful and meditative "A Ghost Story," the tragically underseen "The Old Man & the Gun," and especially 2021's Dev Patel-starring adaptation of "The Green Knight," Lowery has rapidly curated one of the most surprising and sneakily interesting filmographies out there.
Today, we're getting word of his next move and, well, this has the makings of becoming another must-watch, too.
Deadline has the news that Lowery has set up his next production, titled "Mother Mary." Once again teaming up with studio A...

Michaela Coel and Anne Hathaway are joining forces for “Mother Mary,” writer-director David Lowery’s third feature film with A24.
Described as an “epic pop melodrama,” the feature will delve into the relationship between a musician (Hathaway) and a renowned fashion designer (Coel).
Singer-songwriters and past collaborators Jack Antonoff and Charli Xcx will contribute original songs to the film. (Charli Xcx previously wrote the track “Hot Girl” for A24’s “Bodies Bodies Bodies.”) Daniel Hart, who worked on Lowery’s films “The Green Knight” and “A Ghost Story,” is set to compose the score.
Lowery will helm from his own script and produce alongside Toby Halbrooks and James M. Johnston. Jeanie Igoe of Homebird Productions and Jonas Katzenstein, Maximilian Leo and Jonathan Saubach of Filmproduktion will also produce. A24 will handle global distribution.

Greetings, friends. If you're someone who returns to this sporadic column seeking Blu-ray info, I want to thank you. You're swell! And as always, I will continue to bring you the latest in Blu-rays. This week has one of the best movies of 2021: Steven Spielberg's "The Fabelmans." But wait, there's more! There's a 4K release of Hype Williams' amazing cult classic "Belly," Disney's recent animated flick "Strange World," Elvis fighting a mummy in "Bubba Ho-Tep," and of course, the "Black Panther" sequel "Wakanda Forever." That's a fine line-up if you ask me.
The Fabelmans
Steven Spielberg has been talking about making a movie about his childhood for decades, and he finally got around to it with "The Fabelmans." But this isn't hagiography, or Spielberg talking about what a talented kid he was (even though he was). Instead, this is Spielberg grappling with what is arguably the most persistent...

Dominique Thorne entered the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Riri Williams with Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, but the actress had actually auditioned for the role of Shuri in the original movie. She obviously didn’t win the role, but she impressed Marvel Studios enough that they knew they wanted to work with her in future. In Marvel Studios Assembled: The Making of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which is now streaming on Disney+, a short clip of Thorne’s original audition is played, with the actress appearing alongside the late Chadwick Boseman.

Arguably one of the best aspects of "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" was the character arc of Okoye (Danai Gurira). Typically seen as the fearless leader of the Dora Milaje, she underwent a devastating yet important journey that saw her reevaluate what kind of fighter she wants to be. So, what type of fighter does she eventually want to be? Well, that would be a Midnight Angel, a new type of Wakandan warrior with a flying suit and some kickass weaponry. Donning this new suit alongside fellow warrior Aneka (Michaela Coel), we probably won't be seeing the last of the Midnight Angels in the MCU.
This is likely because Okoye's new status as a Midnight Angel has a deeper meaning than just giving her a new title and suit. In an interview with /Film's Vanessa Armstrong, Gurira discussed the suit's thematic importance,...

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever may be an effective, harrowing examination of grief, which depicts a nation and a family mourning the significant loss of King T’Challa — but it is still a Marvel Cinematic Universe film, meaning there is a potentially catastrophic global threat that our heroes (in this case, the royal family of Wakanda, the Dora Milaje, an M.I.T. student named RiRi Williams and CIA agent Everett Ross) must conquer before the nearly three hour run-time is up.

"Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" clocks in at 2 hours and 41 minutes, and lengthy as that may be, it's not hard to understand why. This movie is shouldering so many goddamn burdens that it's a wonder they crammed it all into a single movie: "Wakanda Forever" is mourning T'Challa, honoring the memory of Chadwick Boseman, presenting a way forward without Wakanda's king, giving an ensemble cast of characters room to breathe and doing all of that while introducing an entirely new nation of superpowered people. That's a lot of material! Maybe even enough to fill two movies! So you know what this movie absolutely does not have time for? Updating its audience on the marital status of some random CIA Agent.

It seems like we have this same exact conversation every time a new Marvel movie is released. However, almost every single time this happens, they turn out to be easily discarded or ignored altogether. Perhaps they pull their partner in for one quick kiss, shot at a distance, and that's all you really see of them. It begs the question, why even say that a character is LGBTQ if you're not going to feature them at all?

The LGBTQ+ representation in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever might not exactly be extensive — coming down mostly to a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment of affection between Michaela Coel’s character Aneka and Florence Kasumba’s Ayo — but it’s enough for the moment to have been cut for the film’s release in one Gulf country.
The Hollywood Reporter has learned that while only a very small number of edits have been made to Marvel’s all-star sequel for it to be released in Kuwait, amounting to just over 1 minute of cuts in total, this has included the 10-second scene in which Aneka kisses Ayo on the forehead. Also removed, at the request of censors, was a scene in which a woman gives birth to a child and the line, “A god to his people.”

"Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" introduces quite a few new heroes, including Riri Williams, aka Ironheart (Dominique Thorne) and Namor (Tenoch Huerta). We also meet one of the Dora Milaje, Aneka (Michaela Coel), a little better. Aneka joins with Okoye (Danai Gurira) to become the Midnight Angels, wearing special suits made for them by Shuri (Letitia Wright). Ahead, we're breaking down just who the Midnight Angels are, Aneka's history in the comics, and where we'll see these characters again going forward in the MCU.
Who Is Aneka in the Marvel Comics?
In the comics, Aneka is a member of the Dora Milaje. She kills a Wakandan chieftan because of his abusive behavior toward the women in his village. Despite those mitigating circumstances, Queen Ramonda sentences her to death. Another Dora Milaje, Ayo, who's played by Florence Kasumba in the MCU, can't let it stand and steals Midnight Angels armor to break Aneka out of prison.

While it can be a somber and reverent experience due to the loss of franchise star Chadwick Boseman, the titular hero King T'Challa, and the process of moving forward without either of them, "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" also maintains an element of joy. We're not just talking about the happiness that True Believers get when a new Marvel Studios movie debuts in theaters, either. Ryan Coogler's follow-up to his hit 2018 superhero movie is infused with the exuberance of a true celebration of culture and life. And though the things that bring us joy in the Phase Four finale are the characters like Shuri, M'Baku, Okoye, Nakia, the people of Wakanda, and their resilience in the face of tragedy, the House of Ideas continues to spread tiny bits of happiness throughout their projects for eagle-eyed viewers with the help of well placed Easter eggs.

Hollywood’s two biggest superhero movies of late 2022 — Disney’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Warner Bros.’ Dwayne Johnson tentpole Black Adam — are expected to be blocked from release in China, as Beijing regulators continue to crack down on U.S. access to the world’s second-largest theatrical market.
There is less on the line for Hollywood in China than there used to be, thanks to the country’s steady tightening of censorship control and nearly three years of strict Covid-zero policies, but regulators’ consistent snubbing of top-tier superhero titles is still costing the studios tens of millions in potential revenue.
The first Black Panther film earned 105 million in China in 2018, while Dwayne Johnson’s movies — such as Skyscraper (98 million in China) and Hobbs & Shaw (201 million) — have tended to do big business in the country.

Director Ryan Coogler returns with this sequel to Marvel’s Black Panther (2018) which respectfully marks the passing of previous lead actor Chadwick Boseman. The result is an entertaining adventure that introduces exciting new characters and ensures the continuation of the franchise, while delivering the expected combination of comic book action, humour and emotion, in the mighty Marvel manner.
The tragic and untimely death of actor Chadwick Boseman in 2020 had a devastating impact on Marvel fans worldwide. As a mark of respect, Marvel Studios opted not to simply recast the role of T’Challa / Black Panther for the sequel. Instead, they have rewritten the script to address the fact that the character has died, and explore the impact of his death on Wakanda itself.

The 2018 blockbuster Black Panther marked several milestones for Marvel and the whole MCU in ways that would be hard to follow, not least being its wide-ranging cultural impact, its groundbreaking and game-changing opening for Black filmmakers in front of and behind the camera, its imprint on social issues and certainly the fact that it became the first so-called comic book movie adaptation ever to be nominated for the Best Picture Oscar. That is some legacy, and add its 1.3 billion worldwide gross and you have an obvious candidate for a blockbuster sequel. However the tragic, completely unexpected 2020 death of its star, Chadwick Boseman, of cancer at just age 43, and the whole idea of carrying the story forward without its driving onscreen force of King T’Challa would be a tall order for anyone. Fortunately for us, it is one that largely has been met with dignity, grief over unthinkable loss and...

There’s a new face behind the claws and cowl, as the Marvel Cinematic Universe prepares to usher in its next era with Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Disney’s latest batch of Marvel outings is rounding off in poignant style, with Ryan Coogler’s sequel to 2018’s movie waving goodbye to Phase 4 alongside Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa.
Although most of the Black Panther cast are back for more, the tragic passing of Boseman in 2020 means he’s unable to return for Wakanda Forever. It isn’t just events out of Coogler’s hands that mean characters aren’t suiting up for the war between the Wakandans and Talokan’s, because Daniel Kaluuya’s W’Kabi is also sitting this one out.
Remembering back to Black Panther, W’Kabi was the Head of Security for the Border Tribe, boyfriend of Danai Gurira’s Okoye, and supposed best friend of T’Challa.

Parenthood sure does look good on Rihanna and Aap Rocky. The power couple just made their first red carpet appearance since welcoming their baby boy earlier this year, attending the world premiere of "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" in Hollywood on Oct. 26. They coordinated outfits for the glamorous outing - Rihanna stunning in a beige sequin dress, while Aap Rocky wore a denim-on-denim look in the same muted color. They could hardly contain their smiles as they posed side by side for the cameras.
The evening not only celebrated the Marvel sequel's upcoming Nov. 11 release but also Rihanna's highly-anticipated return to music, as she's recorded a new song for the film's soundtrack. Titled "Lift Me Up," the track is a tribute to the late "Black Panther" star Chadwick Boseman and will be released on Oct. 28. Rihanna collaborated with composer Ludwig Göransson, director Ryan Coogler, and singer-songwriter Tems to bring the track to life.

“Black Panther Wakanda Forever” made its long-awaited world premiere on Wednesday night in Hollywood, with director Ryan Coogler and the film’s star-studded cast paying tribute to the late Chadwick Boseman.
The Marvel sequel takes place following the death of Boseman’s King T’Challa, with the people of Wakanda – especially Queen Ramonda (Angela Bassett), Princess Shuri (Letitia Wright), War Dog Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o), Okoye (Danai Gurira) and M’Baku (Winston Duke) – grieving their loss and searching for a way for their kingdom to endure, reports Variety.
As T’Challa’s death plays a major role in the story of ‘Wakanda Forever’, Boseman’s absence during the evening’s premiere cast a shadow over the celebration. Amid great speculation that Shuri will assume T’Challa’s mantle of the Black Panther in ‘Wakanda Forever’, Wright shared her feelings about creating a sequel without Boseman on the carpet.

With less than a month to go before the release of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Marvel Studios has released a new clip from the movie. With the release of the first trailer for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, it’s becoming something of a Marvel Monday.
The Black Panther: Wakanda Forever clip features Okoye (Danai Gurira), Aneka (Michaela Coel), and Ayo (Florence Kasumba) taking out some soldiers in a laboratory. While both Okoye and Ayo are using the spears associated with the Dora Milaje, Aneka is using a set of energy daggers given to her by Shuri (Letitia Wright), which prompts Okoye to give her a talking to.

Michaela Coel is joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” and she confirmed to Vogue magazine that her character will be the latest queer character in the MCU. Marvel brought its first openly gay hero to the big screen in “Eternals” with Brian Tyree Henry’s Phastos. Now Coel will also be playing a queer character with Aneka, a captain and combat instructor in the Dora Milaje who is in love with fellow warrior Ayo (Florence Kasumba). Aneka’s sexuality is the main reason Coel decided to sign on to star in the “Black Panther” sequel.
