This post contains spoilers for "Thanksgiving."
Eli Roth's "Thanksgiving" is a mean, lean slasher that ramps up on the gore and goes all out on the humor. While the kills are stylishly excessive, and the central mystery is perfectly paced, the film's most dramatically shocking aspect is its extended opening scene that depicts a Black Friday sale gone wrong. Right after the central group of characters — who are all unlikeable to a certain extent, yet not completely irredeemable — are introduced, they unwittingly trigger a stampede-slash-massacre at a local store holding a Black Friday sale. While the situation starts with an overexcited crowd hell-bent on hogging up products at low prices, things escalate when the crowd cascades inside the store, leading to several people being heavily injured or instantly dead.
There is a deliberate kernel of dark humor embedded within this sequence, coupled with a blunt look into mindless consumerism...

"What happened to you?!" Goldwyn Films has released an official trailer for an indie horror titled Making Monsters, from Canadian filmmakers Justin Harding & Rob Brunner. This originally premiered back at the Fantasy FilmFest in 2019, and it also stopped by the Toronto After Dark Film Festival. Christian Brand has a successful YouTube channel. His wife, Alison, is the unwilling star of their prank videos. The stars run into an old friend who invites them up to his place for a weekend. When they arrive, they discover Jesse is not there but his partner is. The couple awakens to find that their phones are gone and their host is nowhere to be found. When Alison is dragged down into the basement, Christian goes after her and finds a computer with video footage of them and past guests. Starring Tim Loden and Alana Elmer, with Jonathan Craig and Peter Higginson. This looks like a creepy mix of ideas,...

Making Monsters, the horror flick from co-directors Justin Harding and Rob Brunner is coming to digital platforms in the U.S. on March 26th. A social media prankster and his fiancee find their idyllic country weekend turn into the ultimate video prank, where the stakes are life and death. Samuel Goldwyn Films is handling the release of Making Monsters in the States and they released a new trailer today. Though I hardly think paying any attention to a YouTuber prankster is worth any of my time there is some very good and creepy stuff going on here. A couple stills were also sents along and one does give reason for me never to take a bath again. The announcement follows. Samuel Goldwyn Films...

Given its title, and considering two of the main characters have made their small fortune exploiting the public's desire to laugh at other people's fear only to seemingly have the tables turned on them by a supposed "fan", one could be forgiven for thinking Making Monsters would be a deep and heavy film about the price of fame. Instead, writer Justin Harding, who co-directed the film with Rob Brunner, wisely keeps it relatively light and tight in this horror film that manages to somehow feel fresh while combining many familiar tropes of the genre to make for an entertaining and creepy feature film debut for the Canadian filmmakers.
