Bastille are currently Two Door Cinema Club’s support act, so you’d imagine that, like them, their début album Bad Blood would sound like your typical Arcade Fire rip-off that appears to be emerging in certain British indie rock bands.
I was rather surprised.
While you do have those elements, such as the overkill harmonies and the folky plucked acoustics, this album rises above that kind of mediocrity. Frontman Dan Smith’s vocals are lovely, and some of the melodies employed in the chorus vocals and synths (which fit in surprisingly well) are very original indeed. In fact, a lot of the instrumentation is quite clever, how this band manages to fit church-like chorus parts with playful synth pokes is mildly impressive.
There is no real lead theme in the music here, at one point you’re listening to some simple piano, then it’s a full blown synth-oriented piece,...

Readers rise to the challenge of putting the 'science' into 'science fiction' for film festival's 48-hour challenge
The lights will dim and flicker in Piccadilly Circus on Tuesday as Sci-Fi London – the "international festival of science fiction and fantastic film" – comes to life with a jolt at the Apollo cinema.
Highlights this year include Death, starring the inimitable Leslie Philips as an inventor who has found a way to communicate from beyond the grave, Osombie, about a zombie Osama bin Laden, and a Boris Karloff all-nighter. Of course there will be more cerebral films, too, such as Clone, which explores the possible psychological fallout from human cloning.
Every year, the festival organisers set aspiring filmmakers the challenge of creating a five-minute movie from scratch over a single weekend, with the title, a prop and a line of dialogue set for them at random. The best shorts are shown at the festival.

New York — Rapper Snoop Dogg gave props on Twitter to an ad for the Toyota Sienna minivan. Actress Tori Spelling linked to a website for rental cars. And reality TV star Khloe Kardashian soliloquized about the brand of jeans that accentuates the famous Kardashian derriere.
"Want to know how Old Navy makes your butt look scary good? Ask a Kardashian," the reality TV star wrote, or tweeted, on the social media website. Of course, she capped off the reflection with a smiley face.
These celebs aren't just writing about family cars and fashion choices for the heck of it. Stars can get paid big bucks – sometimes $10,000 or more per post – to pontificate about clothes, cars and movies in the 140 characters or less allowed per tweet. That's adds up to about $71 per character.
Twitter, which in its five-year existence has reshaped how people shop, vote and start revolutions, is now changing the business of celebrity endorsements.

The dust has settled on the box-office drama centering on Lionsgate's "Kick-Ass," as the comic book adaptation has officially secured first place with a $19.8 million performance. While the final weekend tally isn't quite in the $30 million region that some box-office analysts expected from "Kick-Ass," comic book author Mark Millar is nonetheless elated with the film's performance.
"I'm just back from a weekend's break to find messages from Lionsgate, Matthew Vaughn and various actors on the movie buzzing that we were #1 in America this weekend," Millar told MTV News in an exclusive statement on Monday (April 19). "We were top Friday, Saturday and Sunday — which is amazing, considering we're up against 3-D competition with an R-rated superhero movie.
"It's also worth remembering that [the film] only cost $28 million after the U.
