Frances Tiafoe has been vacationing since the 2023 tennis season came to an end a few weeks ago and created time to visit one of his favorite local teams competing in the NHL.
Tiafoe was born in Hyattsville, Maryland - a close urban suburb of Washington. And it is not by accident that he is a supporter of the NBA's Washington Wizards. He's also fond of the Washington Capitals, competing in the National Hockey League in the USA.
Even for one of tennis' most agile and athletic players, the ice rink on the hockey venue was quite unfamiliar territory. Tiafoe paid a visit while the Capitals players were set to commence their practice on Tuesday.
He was given a warm welcome by the team and tried to test his hockey skills with the stick. That didn't go down well as he failed to control a pass before he switched it up to a tennis racket,...

Exclusive: Ridley Scott unveils Napoleon today at a lavish world premiere in the 2,500-seat Salle Pleyel concert hall in Paris. He is 85 but seems ageless, and Scott is already plotting to quickly resume production on Gladiator, the second installment of his film that won five Oscars including Best Picture. He’s got 90 minutes of footage, fully edited, and needs that much more. He expects to be shooting within two weeks, and he’s already got his next movie slated for around March. Though he is keeping the details to himself, he acknowledged it’s period, with a script like perfectly distilled liquor, and two stars ready to join him in what he said is a bucket list project for him.
It’s tough to keep up with Scott, the master visualist who is most comfortable making a movie, or dreaming up the next one. Interviewing Sir Ridley is a bucket list item for any journalist,...

First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: Clint Might Be Complicit in an Orangutan Date Rape
By 1978, Clint Eastwood had starred in Sergio Leone’s Man With No Name trilogy, headlined three “Dirty Harry” movies, and directed six feature films. He could have pulled an Alexander the Great and wept because there was nothing left to conquer. Instead, he teamed up with a monkey.

In 1966, Montreal-born William Shatner was cast in the role that would change his life, Capt. James Tiberius Kirk in NBC's sci-fi drama "Star Trek." Shatner would go on to play the starship captain for three seasons before reprising Kirk in a Saturday morning cartoon and then in several "Trek" movies throughout the 1970s, '80s, and '90s until Kirk's demise in 1994's "Star Trek Generations." There's no argument that Shatner — who celebrated his 91st birthday in March 2022 — will forever be associated with his "Trek" character. And while Kirk will always be his signature role, the truth is that it's one of many for an actor who first made his way to Hollywood in the 1950s after performing Shakespeare with the famed Stratford Festival in his native Canada.
In fact, Shatner has amassed a whopping 250 screen credits over the years. His roles have run the gamut, ranging from Ranger...

Remember when that "Hey, look at us" clip of "Ant-Man" star Paul Rudd went viral, largely thanks to Paul Rudd's infectious and charming "aw shucks" appeal? That perfectly sums up many of the feelings surrounding the fact that Ant-Man -- of all Marvel superheroes -- is about to receive his very own trilogy of movies with the impending release of "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania." And not only that, but all indications are that the threequel is about to shake up the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a big way, mostly through the introduction of Jonathan Majors' Kang the Conqueror. The multiverse-traveling big bad has a lot riding on his big-screen debut, which is something director Peyton Reed and writer Jeff Loveness were well aware of throughout production on the film.
From a behind-the-scenes perspective, "Quantumania" sets itself apart in a few other ways, as well. For one thing, this marks...

Jonathan Majors is aiming high with his portrayal of Kang the Conqueror in "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania." For months now, Marvel Studios has been hyping up Kang as the next big thing, an antagonist who can "rewrite existence and shatter timelines." As the overarching villain of The Multiverse Saga, he's already got a future "Avengers" sequel named after him -- "Avengers: The Kang Dynasty," coming in May 2025 -- and has drawn numerous comparisons to previous big baddie Thanos, though studio president Kevin Feige says he's a "totally different" character.
Majors has spoken in the press about how seeing Heath Ledger's Joker in "The Dark Knight" was part of what inspired him to become an actor. And he's compared joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe to linking up with a Shakespearean acting troupe. He's also listed real-life historical figures like Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar, and Genghis Khan as influences behind Kang.

William Shatner Documentary Beams Up 790,000 in Equity Crowdfunding, Selling Out in Less Than a Week
William Shatner fans bought up all the shares in the actor’s forthcoming feature-length documentary “You Can Call Me Bill” in less than a week — shelling out nearly 790,000 and topping the film’s funding goal.
Legion M’s equity crowdfunding round for the Shatner documentary, exploring the life and career of the beloved 91-year-old actor, as of Monday had sold out from reservation holders before the company opened the offering to the public. Within four days, the project raised 789,655 from 1,338 investors.
Unlike with other crowdfunding models, Legion M lets investors own an equity stake in the entertainment projects they’re backing. With the Shatner doc, fans were able to invest directly in the Shatner documentary for a minimum of 100, subject to certain SEC restrictions, and they will recoup their money before any profits are shared with Shatner, Legion M or the film’s producer, Exhibit A Pictures. When you’re deep in the process of creating something, it can be hard to tell if what you’re making is good. The final results don’t always match the effort and enthusiasm that went into the production. When Colin Farrell was shooting Alexander with notable director Oliver Stone, he was convinced that the movie would be a huge hit that moviegoers would love.
But the movie ended up being a critical and commercial flop — one of many box office bombs that sent Farrell into a tailspin. He rebounded from a difficult time in his career to star in several excellent films in the past few years.

Nearly twenty years ago, Oliver Stone set out to tell the life story of the ancient Macedonian general and king Alexander the Great. He assembled quite the all-star cast, including Angelina Jolie, Val Kilmer, Anthony Hopkins, Jared Leto, Rosario Dawson, Christopher Plummer, and more, with Colin Farrell starring as Alexander himself. While certainly ambitious, Alexander became a critical and commercial failure upon its release, which Colin Farrell didn’t see coming; In fact, he told THR during a roundtable discussion that the cast was ready for Oscar glory.
Expectation is a dangerous thing. Alexander was a story that Oliver Stone had dreamed of since he was in college. The days are finally getting shorter, and that means that fall will be upon us shortly. That also means that a new season of hockey is right around the corner, and EA Sports is prepared with the newest edition of its popular sports sim, NHL 20. This year’s edition has some new features, a new broadcast package, some much-needed tweaks to players, and a major expansion to the World of Chel game mode, but at its core, it’s still classic EA hockey, and that’s a good thing.

Viewers at home saw Tracy Morgan host, celebrities like Sandra Bullock present and athletes including Drew Brees, Alex Morgan and Giannis Antetokounmpo receive awards, but they didn’t quite catch all the exciting moments left off TV. Here’s what they missed:

The retired basketball superstar laid down the rhymes from the comfort of his own seat, next to his wife, Gabrielle Union. “In West Philadelphia born and raised…” Wade rapped, filling in the remainder of the song with perfect memory as the lyrics cut out.

Bret Baier finally made his Late Show gig last night, a couple weeks late but none the worse for wear after the car accident that nixed his earlier scheduled appearance on Stephen Colbert’s CBS show.
Colbert actually broke the news of Baier’s Jan. 21 accident when the Fox News Special Report host had to cancel a scheduled Late Show appearance.
“I will tell you that I realized the reach of your show in the next day,” Baier told Colbert last night. “Thousands of people emailed or texted. I had people from grammar school saying, ‘Are you in a coma?’ I’m like ‘If I was, I don’t know how I’m going to get back to you.’ ”
Baier described the car crash, which occurred on an icy Montana road when Baier and his wife and two kids were headed to the airport after a ski trip.

In a year that saw the conviction of disgraced former Team USA doctor and Michigan State University physician Larry Nassar, the 2018 Espy awards took it upon itself to shine a light on the unity of the sexual assault survivors and celebrated the feats performed by female athletes over the past year. The show was hosted by former race driver Danica Patrick, the first woman to host the ESPYs since their inception in 1993.
In a somber, spine-tingling moment that brought several in attendance at the Microsoft Theater to tears, around 100 women took the center stage while singer Milck, an abuse survivor herself, sang her anthemic single, “Quiet.” Each woman in the group that filled the stage was representative of the “sister survivors” who spoke out against Nassar.
“Telling our stories of abuse over and over again in detail is not easy,” said Sarah Klein, a former gymnast and victim of Nassar’s abuse.

Go beyond the game! The NHL Winter Classic is becoming a yearly tradition. The game happens every year around New Year’s Day and what makes the game so unique is that it takes place outside, usually in a stadium or arena. The 2011 matchup put the Pittsburgh Penguins versus the Washington Capitals but to the average NHL fan this game was more than epic match up of Sidney Crosby versus Alexander Ovechkin. 24/7: The Road to the NHL Winter Classic aired on HBO, and was an episodic series that took you through four weeks of unprecedented “backstage” access to both teams leading up to the game. Both teams are contenders for the coveted Stanley Cup Trophy at the time of filming. Their match up is highly televised every time the puck is dropped. Team USA and Vancouver Canucks Center Ryan Kesler has been chosen by 2K to be their cover athlete for the upcoming Wii only title NHL 2K 11. After scoring a late goal in Team USA’s first meeting with Canada in the Olympics, USA fell to Canada in overtime of the Gold Medal game.
Kesler is already a very well-established international player after taking home Gold Medals in the 2002 World 18U Championship and 2004 World Junior Championship. With his 2010 Winter Olympics Silver Medal in hand, he will get another chance at Gold in Russia in 2014 (assuming the NHL agrees to play along).

Yesterday, the winter Olympics Game in Vancouver came to an end. Although Canada didn't meet its objective to be the leader in total medal counts, we all have reasons to be proud of what our athletes have achieved. First of all, our men and women managed to win gold medals on our own home soil, starting with Alexandre Bilodeau, a mogulist. Secondly, Canada has become the country which won the most gold medals (14) in a winter Olympic Games!
Obviously, I do have a bias, because there are events that I enjoy watching more than others (especially hockey). Anyway, here are some nice stuff that I'll keep in my memories for ages:
Unlike the American male hockey team who couldn't win the gold medal in Salt Lake City (on their own home soil, mind you), our team convincingly won it! Of course, I would lie to you if I write that...

Left, Sidney Crosby; right, Alexander Ovechkin. For members of smart society whose knowledge of hockey starts and ends with the fact that Rangers hockey star Sean Avery once interned at Vogue, it's worth feigning an interest in the Olympic puck scene and tuning in to watch the epic clash of the titans that's set to take place tonight at Canada Ice Place, in Vancouver, as Sidney Crosby and Team Canada suit up to take on rivals Alexander Ovechkin and Team Russia. Need a primer to impress your pals if you are watching the game down at New York City's Avery-owned sports bar Warren 77? Yesterday on Vf.com, former N.H.L. star and U.S. Olympian Bret Hedican discussed the rivalry between Crosby and Ovechkin:...

The Winter Olympics will undoubtedly create a few new stars, just like they do every four years. Some previously unknown figure skater (we're looking at you, Rachael Flatt) or go-for-broke skier will turn in a breathtaking performance that, along with endless hours of TV coverage, will make him or her an instant household name.
That's all great, and it's part of the appeal of the Olympics. But the 2010 Winter Games also feature a fair number of athletes who've already made that crossover. Following in the footsteps of Dorothy Hamill, Peggy Fleming, the 1980 "Miracle on Ice" hockey team and others, these athletes have become recognizable outside the arena too -- and it turns out a couple of them are pretty fair dancers.
