The film directed by Landon Williams watches as a homicide detective (Ferrigno Jr.) on the hunt for a serial killer experiences a series of disturbing dreams, which lead him to seek hypnotherapy and the aid of a psychiatrist (Meyer). There was a point when screenwriters Chris Charles and Danny Kravitz didn’t know if their film, the Liam Neeson thriller “The Marksman,” was even going to hit theaters after it wrapped production in the fall of 2019. The coronavirus nearly derailed release plans until Open Road Films came up with a bold move to release the film in January 2021 despite the ongoing pandemic. “When Danny and I first found out that our film was coming out in January, we were shocked. Clearly, it wasn’t what we had anticipated, but how could anyone see this coming?” Charles said. “But the more we talked with the studio and understood the release strategy, we understood how it made so much sense. And we’ve been so pleased to see the film find an audience and continue to do so as we’ve come out of the pandemic this year.” As it turned out,...

Over the Borderline: Neeson Clashes with Customs and Cartels in Latest Thriller
By now a well-grooved subgenre unto itself, the Liam Neeson led cat-and-mouse carousel adds another stop with The Marksman, the sophomore effort from Robert Lorenz, last in the director’s chair for Trouble with the Curve (2012). The script from Chris Charles and Danny Kravitz seems designated more for Clint Eastwood’s background and age range than Neeson, here playing a Vietnam veteran widower languishing in socioeconomic despair on the Arizona/Mexico border.
But never mind the logic, for here is another Neeson vehicle wherein he plays a man with nothing left to lose while valiantly protecting the vulnerable in a narrative ill equipped with determining how exactly he’s supposed to exist beyond the end credits—it’s the kind of B-movie fodder which will likely be fondly remembered by the same aficionados who enjoy Charles Bronson’s 1980s output.

Twenty-nine years ago, Yes lead singer Jon Anderson abandoned a half-finished solo album called Uzlot that he’d been been recording in Big Bear, California, with his bandmates Chris Squire and Alan White. Yes were gearing up for a massive reunion tour and he simply put the master tapes in his garage and gave them very little thought as the years started racing by. But just a couple of years ago, producer Michael Franklin reached out to Anderson to see if he’d let him take the tapes and finish the album.

Nearly 30 years ago, Yes frontman Jon Anderson began work on a solo album with help from his bandmates Alan White and Chris Squire. He never got around to finishing it and eventually got sidetracked by Yes work, but recently went back into the studio to complete the album with help from producer Michael T. Franklin. Anderson originally called the project Uzlot, but now that it’s finally done, he’s calling it 1,000 Hands. It comes out March 31st.

San Diego’s Comic-Con International is the biggest event in the world devoted to genre pop culture. While the big Hollywood movies get the most mainstream press, there’s also a large, lesser known and promoted Independent Film Festival devoted to genre short films tucked away within the overall convention.
The Cci-iff, as it’s acronymed, runs completely concurrently with the convention with programming running from morning to night that includes films devoted to comic book-inspired movies, horror movies, sci-fi flicks, comedies and documentaries. There are also several panels on filmmaking sandwiched in between the on-screen entertainment.
The fest also gives out awards. This year’s juror panel includes filmmakers Steven-Charles Jaffee and Kyle Newman, plus entertainment journalist Borys Kit.
Programming blocks are broken up by genre and the full film lineup below gives the exact starting time of each short film. There’s also one feature film screening this year,...
