This… This is how you take a genre or story device and make it feel fresh! Let’s be honest the old re-living the same day over and over till it has a satisfying conclusion is a trope we have seen many many times. Groundhog Day and more recently Happy Death Day are a couple that spring to mind, so when I read the synopsis for Boss Level I did kind of shake my head. However, like I have said so many times, if someone I like is in the movie or it’s a director I’m into then your damn right I’m going to give it a fair shake!

The fantasy trope of Time Loops is all the rage again. Obviously, we all know Groundhog Day, which did it perfectly. Last year brought Palm Springs, which also did it terrifically well. Just a few weeks ago, The Map of Tiny Perfect Things also found a way to make the premise charming. Now, we have Boss Level, which decides to go in a whole other direction. Instead of being a comedy or a romantic comedy, it goes as far away from rom-com as possible. Instead, we have a violent action film, with admittedly comedic undertones. The result is something that stands out, that’s for sure. The movie is a mix of action and science fiction, with a little comedy thrown in for good measure. As we learn early on, former Special Forces agent Roy Pulver (Frank Grillo) is trapped in a time loop that will constantly repeat the day of his murder.

The new action sci-fi thriller Boss Level begins with former Special Forces agent Roy Pulver (Frank Grillo) and an unnamed woman waking up in Pulver’s bed, fully clothed, after what looks like a rough night. But things get rougher very quickly, as an assassin enters Pulver’s apartment and attempts to kill him. Pulver defeats him but ends up dying anyway–only to wake up the next morning and do the whole thing again, perhaps living a little longer and getting killed by someone else, but still dying.
In a running voiceover, Pulver casually informs us that this is the 140th time he’s done this. And he still can’t figure out why or how it’s happening, or how to break out of the time loop he’s stuck in. All he knows is that he will wake up again on the very same morning and despite...

Even though it’s moving at a slower pace than many would like, the vaccine rollout is starting to gain some traction and in turn, moviegoers are going to start setting foot in theaters — safely of course. That said, the specialty box office space might be hearing some more coin drop into its piggy bank in the forthcoming months. It’s been quite a journey, but we’ll get there slowly yet surely.
Eddie Huang, who is best known for writing the best-selling Fresh Off the Boat: A Memoir which was the inspiration for the popular ABC sitcom, makes his feature directorial debut with Boogie which Focus Features releases in theaters today.
The story follows Alfred Chin (Taylor Takahashi) who goes by the name “Boogie”. He is a basketball phenom living in Queens, New York and dreams of one day playing in the NBA. However, his parents have other plans for him.

Add another entry to the time loop directory with Joe Carnahan’s Boss Level arriving as this month’s installment of what feels like a regular ritual these days. It’s not socially relevant like The Obituary of Tunde Johnson, emotionally poignant like Before I Fall, genre-bending like Happy Death Day, or irreverently subversive like Palm Springs, but it is entertaining. This is especially true for fans (like me) of the director’s Smokin’ Aces since that’s the title this latest work most closely resembles whether by way of its frenetic pacing, eccentric criminals, or blunt yet quick-witted humor. With sardonic narration dripping with the frustration that comes from constantly waking up to deadly assassins ensuring death arrives before 1:00pm each day, it never tries to be something it’s not.

Exclusive: Hulu has struck an eight-figure deal for U.S. distribution rights to the Joe Carnahan-directed action sci-fi movie Boss Level starring Frank Grillo, Naomi Watts, Mel Gibson, Will Sasso, Ken Jeong, Annabelle Wallis, Michelle Yeoh and Selina Lo.
The completed film will debut as a Hulu Original in 2021 after the streamer finalized a deal in the low-eight-figure range, we understand.
Captain America and The Grey star Grillo leads cast as former special forces agent Roy Pulver, who is trapped in a time loop that constantly repeats the day of his murder. Pulver manages to uncover clues about a secret government project that could unlock the mystery behind his death but must find Colonel Ventor (Gibson), the head of the government program, while outrunning assassins determined to keep him from the truth, and save his wife (Watts).
Script comes from Carnahan, Chris Borey and Eddie Borey. Producers are WarParty Films; Emmett/Furla Films; Scott Free Entertainment (Ridley Scott); and The Fyzz Facility Pictures. CAA Media Finance brokered the deal with Hulu on behalf of the filmmakers.
It has been an interesting journey so far for the $45-budgeted film, which has been completed since early this year. The movie was initially sold to Byron Allen’s Entertainment Studios in early 2018 but that deal wasn’t ultimately realized. There was a special screening for the film at the Arclight Cinemas in Los Angeles in February, attended by the likes of Walking Dead co-creator Robert Kirkman, and Highland has sold the movie well overseas with those markets awaiting the U.S. release.
Hulu’s roster of original films include splashy Sundance acquisition Palm Springs, Bad Hair, Run and Happiest Season.

Sheaun McKinney has been cast in Boss Level, joining Frank Grillo, Mel Gibson, Naomi Watts, and Ken Jeong. Joe Carnahan is directing the film, which was financed by Emmett/Furla/Oasis and recently picked up by Entertainment Studios to be released sometime next year. Written by Carnahan and Chris and Eddie Borey, the pic centers on Roy (Grillo), a retired Special Forces veteran who is trapped in a never-ending loop resulting in his death and must figure out who is responsible and stop them. McKinney will play Dave, a business college drone who meets Roy every day in Chef Jake’s (Jeong) Chinese restaurant. Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mark Vahradian produced the film with Randall Emmett and George Furla along with Carnahan and Grillo of War Party, and Scott Free. Jules Daly is the exec producer. McKinney, who co-stars with Cedric The Entertainer...

On paper Open Grave sounded like yet another “homage” to the likes of Buried. After all its the tale of a man who wakes up on the titular open grave – that alone was enough to spark comparisons for me. How wrong could I have been…
Directed by Gonzalo López-Gallego (Apollo 18), Open Grave stars Sharlto Copley (District 9, The A-Team) as a man who wakes up in a pit full of corpses with no memory. He’s rescued by a mute Chinese woman who leads him back to a house where there are four other people who have all “awoke” with the same loss of memory and total lack of idea who they are and why they are there.

Don’t Fear the Reaper: Lopez-Gallego and the Search for Substance
In 2011, some may recall a found footage moon expedition thriller called Apollo 18, the English language debut of Spanish filmmaker Gonzalo Lopez-Gallego, which, like many films of its ilk, wears thin quickly, hinging its chills on moon rock arachnoid looking creatures. Since that film seemingly performed well enough within its mediocre trappings, Lopez-Gallego is back with his next feature, Open Grave, returning to the arena of the novice screenwriting pool for a different breed of gimmickry. While it’s clear he has a definite knack for concepts, execution seems to be a sticky point. Dropping us right in the middle of a B thriller scenario, its characters are quickly painted into a dodgy corner, and thus ensues a sterile scenario that takes entirely too much time to bring us to an ending that assumes we’ll find it as...

Starring District 9‘s Sharlto Copley, Open Grave is being released by Tribeca Film on VOD this week, with a digital and limited theatrical release to follow in the coming weeks. If you’d like more information, we have the official trailer, synopsis, and theater list:
“A man (Sharlto Copley, District 9, Elysium) wakes up in a pit of dead bodies with no memory of who he is or how he got there. Fleeing the scene, he breaks into a nearby house and is met at gunpoint by a group of terrified strangers, all suffering from memory loss. Suspicion gives way to violence as the group starts to piece together clues about their identities, but when they uncover a threat that’s more vicious — and hungry — than each other, they are forced to figure out what brought them all together — before it’s too late.”

Director: Gonzalo López-Gallego. Writers: Chris Borey and Eddie Borey. Cast: Sharlto Copley, Joseph Morgan, Thomas Kretschmann, Erin Richards and Josie Ho. Open Grave is a Hungarian shot horror feature, from director Gonzalo Lopez-Gallego. Lopez-Gallego is notoriously known for his work on the abysmal found footage film Apollo 18. Lopez-Gallego's work and shooting on Open Grave is much better. However, the story for this feature, which is more mystery than horror, does not unpack some of its major plotpoints very well. Therefore, the ending is a little drawn out and unsatisfying. Writers and brothers Chris and Eddie Borey needed a little more tension and action in their script. Still, Open Grave creates some compelling intrigue through the first two acts. It would be a waste and disservice to readers to reveal the film's story, in its entirety. So, the story for Open Grave will be discussed in general terms. Basically, six...

Open Grave is a film from Spanish director Gonzalo Lopez-Gallego (Apollo 18) and production company Atlas Independent. This post-apocalyptic thriller will release within Italy August 14th. Therefore, the first trailer for the film is in Italian. However, this is an English language film. The trailer shows one man, who awakens in a pit full of bodies. He is one of six survivors and he must determine what his role is in the massacre. Is he the killer? a victim? or, something else? The clip is a mysterious one. Horror fans will have to read between the lines to figure out the subtext of the film as the Italian dubbing threatens to derail any understanding of the trailer at all. Hopefully, an English language preview will come along shortly, for this biological terror themed feature. Fans can enjoy the clip below. Two characters from the trailer in more detail Director: Gonzalo López-Gallego.
