Showtime Documentary Films is taking The Kingmaker, about the Marcos family’s political reign in the Philippines, to the Venice Film Festival.
The doc from Emmy-winning director Lauren Greenfield (The Queen of Versailles) will make its world premiere at the festival this month.
The Kingmaker explores and exposes the Marcos family’s long history of corruption, extravagance and brutality, including Calauit Island, a safari park that favors the well-being of its exotic animals to the detriment of the people living there.
The film is written and directed by Greenfield. It includes one-on-one interviews with Imelda Marcos, the country’s former first lady and powerful leader in her own right, who divided a nation. Now 90, she continues to influence the revival of authoritarianism in the Philippines.
“The story of Imelda Marcos, past and present, has achieved an exceptional level of relevance in The Kingmaker,” said Vinnie Malhotra, Evp Nonfiction Programming at Showtime Networks.

Javier Bardem has been through a lot of change since 2008. He won an Academy Award that year and reconnected with Vicky Cristina Barcelona co-star Penélope Cruz, whom he later married and started a family. One constant since 2008 has been Bardem’s untiring work on the documentary Sons of the Clouds, available on iTunes today. Joined by Clouds’ co-producer Lilly Hartley and director Álvaro Longoria, Bardem sat down with EW to discuss the passion project that he considers a matter of ”moral and historical responsibility.”
The seed for the doc began just months after Bardem took home Oscar gold for No Country for Old Men.

Javier Bardem knows that when celebrities trumpet humanitarian causes, like his devotion to refugees in the Western Sahara, the public generally has a cynical reaction. It's just that he doesn't necessarily think that's fair.
"My question is: These people who are throwing those knives, what are they doing?" Bardem told HuffPost Entertainment in a recent interview. "First of all, I think they may be doing it for the right reasons. But even if they aren't, they are doing something. In the end, it's about doing something because we are too lazy. We are comfortable."
To get out of his comfort zone, Bardem produced and narrated the new documentary "Sons of the Clouds." The film -- which premiered at the 2012 Berlinale in February and is available now on iTunes, with a larger VOD rollout to follow on Nov. 6 -- focuses on the Western Sahara, a former Spanish colony, which has been...

Digital distributor GoDigital has acquired rights to the Javier Bardem-produced documentary “Sons of The Clouds: The Last Colony” ahead of the film’s Toronto International Film Festival screening Thursday, September 13 in the Mavericks sidebar. GoDigital plans to release the film mid-October in concert with a theatrical debut at the IFC Center in New York that will kick off a series of screenings around the country. “Sons of The Clouds,” which first screened at the Berlin Film Festival, focuses on an unresolved conflict in the Western Sahara region of Northern Africa that has resulted in the displacement of nearly 200,000 Sahrawi people to refugee camps. Lilly Hartley produced the project along with Bardem and Morena Films’ Alvaro Longoria, who directed. “This is a gripping documentary made by passionate filmmakers,” said GoDigital CEO Logan Mulvey. “We’ve been following the project for a while and wanted to grab it...

Candescent Films was just launched — and has yet to release a single project — but they’ve already amassed a slate that makes them something to look out for. Deadline tells us about the company, which has been created with an interest in making “films that advance a social agenda.”
Among these promising movies they’ll be financing and co-producing are new works from Javier Bardem and Jeff Nichols. The No Country for Old Men star will lead and produce Sons of the Clouds, a documentary that centers on “the political and human rights issues facing the people of the Sahara”; the main point of focus will be “a former Spanish colony in Africa that is now occupied by Morocco and where there are more than 200,000 refugees living in camps in the desert.” Alvaro Longoria‘s work is on track to be Candescent’s first completed project, with a tour of...
