Ivan Drago was Rocky Balboa’s most fearsome foe and Dolph Lundgren’s chilling performance helped turn Rocky IV into a genuine classic. Thirty years later, Drago returned in Creed II, training his son Viktor Drago (Florian Munteanu) to face off against Adonis Creed (Michael B. Jordan). Following the positive fan reaction to Lundgren’s return, MGM announced a Drago spinoff movie, but we haven’t heard all that much about it over the last two years.
Our own Tyler Nichols recently spoke with Dolph Lundgren about his upcoming movie, Wanted Man, and couldn’t resist asking if there was any movement on the Drago spinoff movie.
“You know it was really tracking well for a while and there was a script,” Lundgren said. “And then there were comments on the script and then it kind of had to deal with Ukraine and and things like that. But right now,...

"Rocky IV" was my favorite movie in the franchise as an '80s kid, although the death of Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers) was tough to take. We knew something bad was going to happen when the showboating former champ stepped into the ring against Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren), but the brutal manner in which he got destroyed was shocking. The way Apollo was left twitching on the canvas as his life ebbed away was deeply upsetting, made even worse by Drago's stone-cold delivery verdict: "If he dies, he dies."
Nowadays, the film only comes fourth in my overall assessment of the series. When you take a step back from the nostalgia and the irresistibly cheesy bombast, only two things happen in the movie. Apollo dies, then Rocky gets payback by beating the Russian fighter in his own yard. Big events, admittedly, but the rest is just filler, a mixture of...

Let’s get ready to rumble! Everybody loves a properly done sports movie which can show epic comeback stories and moments that make audiences cheer as if they’re watching the sport live. No set of movies has done this better than the Rocky franchise and the continuation into the Creed films has been seamless to say the least. Michael B. Jordan has taken on the mantle like no other actor could and the success of the recently released Creed III seems to be evidence that audiences agree. With the third installment (ninth overall) raking in nearly $200 million dollars at the box office, the franchise has become more popular and profitable than ever – and Mbj plans to keep building it even further, with Amazon and MGM recent announcing a “Creed-Verse”.

After scoring a Tko with audiences for his directorial debut on Creed III, Michael B. Jordan could get back into the ring to develop a Creed-Verse with Amazon. According to Deadline, Jordan is dancing around a universe-spanning deal for Creed-related film and television projects. While there have been multiple meetings and attempts to build a Rocky universe, the latest dealings could yield hard-hitting results for the franchise’s future. The seriousness of the deal is the result of Creed III‘s success, which has earned $110M+ worldwide at the time of this posting.
Details about the deal remain shrouded in mystery, though Deadline says an anime series connected to the Rocky IP is possible in addition to a live-action spinoff series. The idea of building a project around Adonis Creed’s daughter, Amara, is also being discussed. The anime project sounds likely, as Jordan is an out-and-proud anime fan.

Exclusive: Creed already broke ground for Amazon, with the latest installment in the MGM movie franchise, Creed III, racking up a $100M-plus global opening and setting a box office record for the tech giant. Now Creed could spawn an Amazon universe spanning both film and TV. There have been meetings with franchise star and filmmaker Michael B. Jordan about various Creed-related projects for the past year, sources said. The plans for the scope of the universe have gotten bolder in the wake of Creed III’s big debut. Reps for Amazon and Jordan declined comment.
Details are sketchy because some of the conversations are still in exploratory stages, but we hear that an anime series connected to the Rocky spinoff IP is in the works, and there are ideas for a companion live-action TV series. The underdog story is a classic cinematic trope for a reason. We follow our heroes from humble beginnings with few believing in them, but through grit and determination, they become self-made champions. It's the American dream personified on the big screen. Few franchises have offered consistent stand-up-and-cheer moments more than "Rocky." The Italian Stallion hadn't seen the ring since 2006's "Rocky Balboa." Then, director Ryan Coogler, star Michael B. Jordan, and Stallone found a way to breathe new life into the franchise. In a world of spinoffs, reboots, and retreads, it's rare to get one that works as well as the first "Creed." The film comes out swinging with the franchise's most realistic fights, a dynamic relationship between Adonis and Rocky, and several moments that make grown men ugly cry (or at least this grown man).

Among the long history of boxing films, the “Creed” films have stood apart from their predecessors in the genre in how they shoot the action in the ring. In fact, as the new “Creed III” demonstrates, they even stand apart from each other.
“Creed III” sees series star Michael B. Jordan make his directorial debut with a threequel in which Adonis comes face-to-face with his childhood friend Damian (Jonathan Majors), a Golden Gloves-winning amateur boxer who went to jail for reasons not immediately revealed. Feeling that the success and opportunity Creed enjoys was taken from him, Dame’s initially warm reunion with the now-retired champion turns south, culminating in a deeply personal fight before a sold-out crowd at Dodger Stadium.

Actor-director Michael B Jordan, whose latest film ‘Creed 3’ has hit the screens, has shared his thought process behind making Los Angeles city as a character in the film. The actor said in a statement: “Since we were kinda treating this like an origin story, a sequel and a trilogy all in one, we thought it was important to make Los Angeles a character, a homecoming of sorts. And then you break it down further like what childhood trauma did the characters share? So we leaned into the reality of those environments.”
Along with Jordan, the film also stars Jonathan Majors, who portrays the character of Damian Anderson – the former close friend of Adonis. Tony ‘Little Duke’ Evers is played by Wood Harris, while Viktor Drago is played by Florian Munteanu.
Michael further mentioned: “And then that type of area where Black families lived and thrived, who had money. Where would Apollo Creed be at?...

Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) is unsurprisingly the key figure in the "Rocky" franchise, as its central protagonist, its driving force, and with the franchise starting directly from Stallone's own brain. When the franchise first spun off into Ryan Coogler's "Creed," Stallone's fingerprints were still all over it. New character Adonis Creed (Michael B. Jordan) is, of course, the son of Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers), Rocky's antagonist-turned-friend who tragically died fighting Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren) in "Rocky IV." The first "Creed" film sees Rocky mentor the up-and-coming young fighter, whose goal is to become the heavyweight champion of the world.
Stallone was also heavily involved in "Creed II," with Rocky training Adonis to fight Viktor Drago (Florian Munteanu), the son of the man who killed Apollo. There are high emotional stakes in a sequel that adds another great character to the expanding "Rocky" and now "Creed" universe. "Creed III" is now in theaters,...

Rocky Balboa is one of cinema’s most beloved heroes. After creating and portraying the character in 1976’s Best Picture winner, Sylvester Stallone went on to play the Italian Stallion seven more times, earning a second Oscar nomination for his supporting work in Creed (2015). Rocky is such an icon that a statue bearing his image is still a popular tourist destination in Philadelphia.
So it’s quite a feat that Stallone’s absence is never once noticeable in Creed III. Michael B. Jordan triumphantly makes the franchise his own and confirms that Adonis Creed, the son of Rocky’s nemesis-turned-friend Apollo Creed, is a compelling character in his own right. Creed III is also Jordan’s directorial debut, and he delivers an energetic and entertaining entry that breathes new visual life into a nearly 50-year-old series.

Sylvester Stallone has been in every movie in the Rocky universe as Rocky Balboa - until now. "Creed 3" marks the first film in the "Rocky" and "Creed" franchises that doesn't include Stallone as the beloved Philly boxer who rose from an underdog to one of the greatest of all time. And Stallone has been very open about his reasons to not join the new movie, which stars Michael B. Jordan as Adonis "Donnie" Creed. (Jordan also served as the film's director.) In the movie, Adonis reconnects with his childhood friend Damian "Dame" Anderson (Jonathan Majors), who's just been released from prison. Adonis has a lot to handle as he navigates the film, and it does feel a little odd that he never turns to Rocky for advice. Here's why Stallone as Rocky isn't in the film at all.

Adonis Creed, like Rocky Balboa before him, is a fighter who faces down his demons and finds his triumph-of-the-human-spirit mojo, all leading up to his inevitable delivery of that knockout punch. The first two “Creed” films, like the six “Rocky” films, were rah-rah crowd-pleasers, with the hero taking on an adversary who represents the forces of darkness. The boxing foes in these movies are a little like comic-book supervillains: Clubber Lang, Ivan Drago, Drago’s vengeful son, and so on. They’ve been catchy and, at times, memorable characters, but it’s part of their appeal that they’re two-dimensional raging-bull enemies you would hardly rank as layered human beings.
But “Creed III,” directed with impressive first-time flair by its star, Michael B. Jordan, is infused with a different flavor. Adonis, having settled into retirement in his sleek L.A. mansion, appears to be sitting on top of the world.

If you're like me, you've been anxiously compiling a list of all your returning and potential new appointment TV shows coming up in March. "The Mandalorian," "History of the World: Part II," "Shadow and Bone," "Yellowjackets," "Riverdale" — it's enough to make me grateful I've yet to get into either "Perry Mason" or "Ted Lasso," both of which are also coming back that month. There is, of course, another series making its much-anticipated return in March, but we'll get to that later ... in case you couldn't guess what it is from this article's header image alone.

Jordan. As the movie gears up to be unveiled, Warner Bros. has released a final trailer to build the hype for Heavyweight Championship bout between Jordan’s Creed and his brother from another past-turned-rival, Damian Anderson, played by a muscled-up Jonathan Majors.
The official synopsis reads,

In between moments of men barrelling toward each other in the 2023 Super Bowl, we got a look at men pummelling each other in the "Creed III" trailer. The upcoming boxing drama -- the ninth entry in the "Rocky" movie series that began in 1976 -- follows Adonis "Donnie" Creed (Michael B. Jordan) seven years on from 2018's "Creed II." Donnie is now a successful professional boxer and has settled into a happy home life with his partner Bianca Taylor (Tessa Thompson). But this seemingly perfect life is threatened when a face from Donnie's past turns up to cause trouble.
That face -- and the film's new villain, with no known ties to the "Rocky" franchise -- comes in the form of "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania" star Jonathan Majors, who plays Damian "Dame" Anderson. Fresh out of prison, the former boxing prodigy has a point to prove to his childhood friend Donnie.

When you look over the vast landscape of legacy sequels in the past decade, a strong argument could be made that "Creed" is among the best of the best. Where this could have been another shallow attempt to revitalize a franchise, the talents of director Ryan Coogler, star Michael B. Jordan, and franchise creator Sylvester Stallone combined to make something new and memorable. "Creed" borrows from "Rocky" without losing sight of the titular character's story taking the spotlight.
"Creed II" left its titular fighter in an interesting position the last time we saw him. It further explored Adonis' rise in the boxing scene as he faced off against Viktor Drago (Florian Munteanu), the son of fighter Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren), who murdered Adonis' father Apollo (Carl Weathers) during a match. Outside of the ring, however, lies a greater challenge ahead in learning how to be a good husband and father...

It’s Michael B. Jordan versus Jonathan Majors in the first trailer for “Creed III,” and who will win this brawl is anybody’s guess. MGM and United Artists Releasing debuted footage from the upcoming boxing sequel on Tuesday morning.
Jordan returns as Adonis “Donnie” Creed, son of Rocky Balboa’s fiercest opponent, Apollo Creed. But the actor isn’t just throwing punches at Majors’ antagonist Damian “Dame” Anderson in the film, “Creed III” also marks Jordan’s directorial debut. Just as “Rocky” star Sylvester Stallone went on to helm four of the franchise’s films, Jordan stakes his own claim behind the camera with an ambitious take on the material.
The footage begins with Donnie Creed on top of the world — a champion boxer on the cover of Forbes, with his wife Bianca (Tessa Thompson), a success in her own right as singer, and their daughter Amara (newcomer Mila Davis-Kent) beside them.

Sylvester Stallone is synonymous with the character of Rocky Balboa, the scrappy underdog boxer who first brought him to the spotlight in the ’70s. But in recent years, Stallone has made it very clear that even though the films are inextricably linked with him, he’s not happy about the way the original deal was structured and thinks he should have received an ownership stake.
On July 31, following the announcement of a “Rocky” spinoff film in development about the characters of Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren) and Viktor Drago (Viktor Drago), Stallone took to Instagram to express his frustrations about the direction of the expanding franchise, and particularly its longtime producer Irwin Winkler. “Creed III” has just been pushed to 2023, but MGM clearly has confidence in the sequel’s success. The company is continuing to aggressively expand the franchise by developing a new spin-off film, “Drago,” from screenwriter Robert Lawton (via The Wrap).
While plot details are scarce, the name “Drago” is instantly recognizable to fans of the Rocky franchise. Ivan Drago, the Russian boxer played by Dolph Lundgren in “Rocky IV,” is one of Rocky Balboa’s most iconic foes. In “Creed II,” Lundgren returned as Ivan Drago and Florian Munteanu was introduced as Viktor Drago, his son who squared off against Michael B. Jordan’s Adonis Creed.
While it is not confirmed if Lundgren and Munteanu are returning for the film, the premise appears to follow the “Creed” formula by telling the story of the son of a famous Rocky Villain.

The studio is developing “Drago,” a spinoff of “Creed,” which itself is a spinoff of “Rocky” — the successful boxing franchise starring Sylvester Stallone as the ultimate underdog Rocky Balboa.
Robert Lawton has been hired to write the screenplay. He got the job after impressing MGM executives with his spec script “Becoming Rocky,” about the making of the first “Rocky” film, according to The Wrap, which first reported the news of Lawton’s hiring. Though the studio didn’t move ahead with his film idea, it appointed Lawton to build out a backstory about Russian boxer Ivan Drago, who took on Rocky in 1985’s “Rocky IV.” His character’s son, Viktor Drago, appeared in 2018’s “Creed II,” stepping into the ring against another offspring of Rocky’s rivals, Adonis Creed.

Screenwriter Robert Lawton is set to write the “Rocky” spinoff “Drago” for MGM, multiple insiders with knowledge of the project exclusively tell TheWrap.
Although plot details are being kept under wraps, “Drago” centers on Russian fighter Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren), who first appeared as the antagonist in 1985’s “Rocky IV,” and his son Viktor Drago (Florian Munteanu) who was last seen as the antagonist in 2018’s “Creed 2.”
Lawton’s spec script “Becoming Rocky” about the making of the first “Rocky” film, was one of 50 scripts that won a 2021 Nicholl Fellowship. MGM execs were impressed by the spec and the “Drago” take that Lawton came up with, giving him the job.

Michael B. Jordan is preparing to make his directorial debut with “Creed III,” the latest chapter in Adonis Creed’s saga, which is set to hit theaters Thanksgiving 2022.
When news broke that Jordan would take the helm of the franchise, in addition to starring as the boxing champ, the first-time feature filmmaker released a statement explaining why he wanted to take on the challenge.
“Directing has always been an aspiration, but the timing had to be right,” Jordan stated. “‘Creed III’ is that moment — a time in my life where I’ve grown more sure of who I am, holding agency in my own story, maturing personally, growing professionally and learning from the Greats like Ryan Coogler, most recently Denzel Washington, and other top tier directors I respect. All of which sets the table for this moment.”

Russell Hornsby has been cast as Don King in the upcoming Hulu limited series about Mike Tyson, “Iron Mike,” Variety has learned exclusively.
Hornsby joins previously announced series lead Trevante Rhodes, who will play Tyson. The series is said to be an exploration of the wild, tragic and controversial life and career of Tyson, one of the most polarizing figures in sports culture. Production on the eight-episode series is currently underway.
The King character is described as ruthlessly ambitious with a flashy personality. He is a notorious boxing promoter that takes Tyson’s boxing career to the next level. He’s a businessman; strategic, resilient, knowing how to work everything in his favor. However, much of his arrogance might be hiding a deeper vulnerability. While others may focus on the little details, King has his eyes on the prize – always thinking of the bigger picture.

Creed III is happening. The third entry in what initially started life as a continuation of the Rocky boxing franchise is now moving forward as a series of its own… and without Rocky.
The movie will follow up 2018’s Creed II, in which Adonis Creed (Michael B. Jordan) faced off in the ring against Viktor Drago (Florian Monteanu) — son of the man who killed his father, Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren) — while also becoming a family man and continuing to come to terms with the legacy of his dad, Apollo Creed. Not nearly as fresh and urgent as 2015’s original Creed, the second movie was still received warmly enough by audiences and critics to make a third entry possible. Although there are some major new wrinkles this time around.
Everything you need to know about Creed III is right below, so check it out and keep coming back for more updates.

It has been such a pleasure watching Michael B. Jordan evolve onscreen. From his breakout as Wallace, the emotional center of the first season of The Wire, to Vince Howard, the anchor of the latter seasons of Friday Night Lights, on to film projects that showcased his true leading man ability like Creed and Fruitvale Station, Jordan has always projected both naturalism and star power. He’s been compared to Denzel Washington by The Hollywood Reporter, listed as a “rising young star” in just about every media trade publication, and has even been named People’s Sexiest Man Alive. Yet despite this, Jordan still projects an everyman quality that makes him believable in superhero spectacles and courtroom dramas alike.

With the debut of the teaser trailer for “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” on Monday, Marvel Studios has finally pulled back the curtain on the first major superhero movie backed by an American studio to star a predominantly Asian cast. Starring Simu Liu (“Kim’s Convenience”), directed by Destin Daniel Cretton (“Just Cause”) and written by David Callaham (“Wonder Woman 1984”), the film further expands the scope of the Marvel Cinematic Universe while breaking obscenely overdue ground for Asian representation on a blockbuster scale.
Not only was it gratifying to finally see Liu in action as Shang-Chi, the teaser also revealed some tantalizing new details about the movie. Here’s what we’ve learned.
Who is Shang-Chi?
Marvel Comics first introduced Shang-Chi in 1972 as a way to capitalize on the growing popularity of the popular TV show “Kung Fu”.

“Creed III” will be missing one very iconic character in Rocky Balboa, but its star Michael B. Jordan says that’s because the upcoming film will be about Adonis Creed “moving forward” into the future.
After Rocky quietly disappeared into the crowd at the end of “Creed II,” Sylvester Stallone confirmed that the champion boxer would not be returning for the third film in the franchise, but his “essence and his spirit” lives on.
“I think that Sly let it be known that he wasn’t coming back for this one but I think, you know, his essence and his spirit… there’s always going to be a little bit of Rocky within Adonis,” Jordan said in an interview with IGN. “But this is a Creed franchise, and we really want to build this story and this world around him moving forward. I really enjoyed Creed II, the 2018 film that followed Adonis Creed (Michael B. Jordan), son of Apollo Creed and protege of Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone), as he took on Viktor Drago (Florian Munteanu), the son of Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren), who had fought and killed Apollo Creed in a fight decades earlier.
The Creed films are both great, and encompass the heart of the original Rocky films while telling new stories with fantastically rich characters. But even though the film was great, there was one scene that was cut that two of the stars were pretty bummed about.
At FanX Salt Lake Comic Convention this past weekend, Lundgren chatted with Cb about the film and a fight scene we almost got to see between the iconic characters Rocky Balboa and Ivan Drago. Here’s how Lundgren described the scene:

Creed 2 Almost Brought Back Another Fan Favorite From the Franchise, Apollo Creed... in Ghost Form??
In a recent Q&A interview with Dolph Lundgren at Monster Mania Con 42, he was asked about returning to the Rocky franchise in Creed II. He came back into the story as Ivan Drago, who has trained his son Viktor Drago (Florian Munteanu) to challenge Adonis Creed (Michael B. Jordan) in the ring. The movie saw the return of his wife in the original, Brigitte Nielsen, and here’s what he had to say about it:
It was a great idea I thought [to bring Nielsen back]. In the original first draft it was Apollo came back. Or like his ghost or something. It was a little hokey, you know. So I think it was much better to bring Brigitte back.
You read that right. The original draft of the sequel thought about bringing Apollo Creed back… as a ghost. He doesn’t expand on that, but he makes it sound like it was...

The 7th instalment in the Rocky franchise was an unexpected treat and a great send off to the franchise and the character. But, of course, since that film did so well, a sequel was inevitable. This time around the film pits the titular character Adonis Creed against Viktor Drago, the son of Ivan Drago, the man who killed Adonis’ father in the ring all those years ago. Already the concept is weak because it’s really unnecessary and sounds more like something a fan would pitch as an idea in the comments section on Sylvester Stallone’s Instagram. A lot of what made Creed a great film was how emotional and well written it was, Adonis’ character was so believable and the people around him...

In 2015, Ryan Coogler’s Creed—a Rocky spinoff starring Michael B. Jordan as the son of famous Rocky opponent Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers)—was a surprise box office hit. Wedged between Coogler’s small debut film, Fruitvale Station (2013), and the huge success of this year's Black Panther, Creed was respectably mid-budget. The film sees Adonis follow the path of his father into pro boxing, with the help of trusty trainer Sylvester Stallone. Creed II is a continuation in the mood of excitement and triumphalism of the prior film, directed this time by the lesser-known Steven Caple Jr. This sequel has more than a fair helping of dynamic thrills and compelling drama to round out what is otherwise a fairly average story. Michael B. Jordan returns as the volatile and restless as Adonis, now starting a new life on the West Coast with his expectant girlfriend Bianca (Tessa Thompson) and having just won his heavyweight title.

At the European Premiere of Creed II in London Michael B. Jordan, Tessa Thompson, Dolph Lundgren, Florian Munteanu and Director Steven Caple Jr. all walked the red carpet for the Rocky spin-off. Sylvester Stallone appears once again as Rocky Balboa.
In Creed 2 Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren) from Rocky 4 returns with his son Viktor Drago along with Milo Ventimiglia and Phylicia Rashad.
Jordan talked about returning to Adonis Creed with a new focus on the character, and how to raise the stakes and bring something different to what audiences know and expect. The focus on family is something that the actor felt was the epitome of what the character is, and that very much inspired the events of Creed 2. Dolph Lundgren talked about bringing a deeper back story to Ivan Drago, and how he as a character lost everything. We find Drago in a very different place to where we left him in Rocky IV.

In 2015, Ryan Coogler’s Creed came out of nowhere to become one of the biggest box office surprises of the year after taking a tired Rocky franchise and turning it into something fresh, original and highly lucrative. Coogler did this by managing to stay true to the essence of the original films and by adding his own twist on a much-loved story.
Relinquishing his directorial duties in Creed II in favour of writing and producing, Coogler has handed the baton to newcomer Steven Caple Jr in this impressive sequel which sees Michael B Jordan back as boxer Adonis Creed (son of Apollo Creed) and Sylvester Stallone as the iconic Rocky Balboa and Creed’s boxing coach.
After a triumphant win which sees him crowned world champion and with his singer girlfriend Bianca (Tessa Thompson) expecting their first child, Adonis Creed seems to be finally on his way to achieving everything he’s ever dreamt of.
