The American Film Institute (AFI) has announced the full lineup for their 2023 festival, which will run in person from Oct. 25 to Oct. 29. The festival will feature the world premiere of Rob Reiner’s “Albert Brooks: Defending My Life” and the world premiere of Matthew Brown’s “Freud’s Last Session,” starring Anthony Hopkins and Matthew Goode.

“I set out upon this journey to become the LeBron James of swimming – to just become the greatest that I can be, but also the most recognized swimmer in the world,” Hill tells Den of Geek.
Hill was just 10 years old when he first experienced total paralysis and was diagnosed with Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) – a hereditary neurological condition that can result in loss of muscle tissue and touch sensation. Over the years, however, Hill not only gradually regained his mobility but became an elite swimmer. The Los Angeles-native is now ranked #1 in the US Paralympic 50m Freestyle and is currently in Tokyo representing his country in the 2020 Paralympics.

Talking about how the specialty label released an older adult skewing (66% over 35) feature in the pandemic marketplace, leaning toward women 52%; demos which have been seen as reluctant to head back to the cinema, Focus Distribution Boss Lisa Bunnell tells Deadline this morning, “There are moviegoers who want to go back to theaters. If you don’t offer them a film, if you don’t give people the opportunity to see a movie, you’ll never know if they’ll go back or not.” Bunnell also adds, “We’re just trying to keep theaters going.”
In an earlier note sent out to press, Bunnell beamed about the specialty label’s B.O. notch of having two movies open back-to-back at the weekend B.

Exclusive: AMC Networks-owned streamer Umc has ordered a legal drama from Adam Starks (On My Block), Tracy Grant (Lincoln Heights) and Kemy Time Productions.
The subscription service, dedicated to Black film and TV and a rival of ViacomCBS’ BET+, has handed Lace a six-episode order for its first season.
The series will follow a prolific Los Angeles attorney who often blurs the lines between right and wrong to protect her rich and powerful clientele.
It is currently casting and the producers are in talks with Jamal Hill, who helmed Netflix feature Deuces, to direct. It was created by Katrina Y. Nelson, co-founder of Kemy Time Productions along with Michelle Ebony Hardy, Starks and Grant.
Nelson and Hardy will serve as co-showrunners and will executive produce alongside Starks and Grant. Brett Dismuke, Chief Content Officer of Umc, and VP of Development & Production, Nikki Love, will serve as executive producers for Umc.

The American Black Film Festival (ABFF) has set its lineup for the 2020 virtual edition of the fest which runs August 21-30. In addition, IMDb will simulcast The Best of the ABFF Awards Ceremony on its homepage on closing night.
The online fest will bring the energy and magic of the live fest as it spotlights the best of independent Black cinema, studio premieres, conversations and panels, along with virtual networking events. ABFF will also introduce the inaugural John Singleton Award for Best First Feature for a director of African descent.
Of the 90 films featured in this year’s fest, 90% of the submissions are from Black filmmakers, 70% are first time filmmakers and approximately 40% are women.
“The more than 90 films in this year’s festival are the work of a group of powerful and passionate storytellers who reflect the diversity of voices in our industry,” said Jeff Friday, founder and CEO ABFF Ventures.

Thaddeus Street, who played the role of Black Frankie in HBO’s The Deuce for three seasons, has signed with Apa.
Street is best known for his performance as Verdon Coates Jr in the independent feature film DC Noir, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and Urban World Film Festival. The film was written and directed by Emmy-nominated writer and director George Pelecanos.
Additionally, he played opposite of Kj Smith (Bet’s Sistas) and Terayle Hill (Love Simon) in the upcoming romance drama The Available Wife, co-written and directed by Jamal Hill (Brotherly Love). He is also a lead in the upcoming crime action pic Paradise City.

Poorna Jagannathan, Nikohl Boosheri (Freeform’s The Bold Type) and newcomer Catharine Daddario will star in Alia’s Birth, an indie drama from Sam Abbas. It’s about a rocky relationship between a female couple that forces them to spend the night apart. Abbas will producer under his company ArabQ Film, an Arab-based Lgbtq-focused production company, along with Tatiana Bears, Nicole Townsend, and Neal Kumar. This marks the second feature from ArabQ Film after making its debut with The Wedding, which also starred Boosheri. Anacrónica, a newly formed production company in Bolivia led by actors Quim Del Rio and Nakai Mirtenbaum, will team with ArabQ Films on this project. Executive producers are Randelson Floyd, Suki Sandhu, David Klein, Josh Jupiter, Jorge Quintero, Lucky Cheng, Quim Del Rio, and Nakai Mirtenbaum. The project is set to begin shooting this summer in New York.

The Queen Latifah/Flavor Unit-produced drama, "Brotherly Love," written and directed by Jamal Hill, with Eric D. Hill Jr., Cory Hardrict, and Keke Palmer starring, opened on Friday, April 24th, in a healthy 200 theaters, and ended the weekend with a $246,902 take, for a per screen average of roughly $1,235, which isn't very strong for an opening. But it some times takes smaller, lesser known films like this, without the massive studio marketing budgets, a little longer to find an audience.
