Presenting two real-life stories from my days of yore, although names have been changed to protect both the innocent and the guilty.
Story The First:
I knew a girl in high school – I wouldn’t say we were friends, but she was someone who had never participated in the Piggy horrors. Sally was an A+ student, on the track to an Ivy League school. Pretty (but not gorgeous) and popular (but quiet about it), she came to me one day and said that she needed to talk to me privately. I was surprised… and a bit suspicious. What did she want? But because Sally had never been overtly mean to me, even though she was part of the clique that instigated most of the callous cruelties upon me, and because I still hoped to be “accepted,” and I wanted to believe for some reason she was about to warn me...

Somehow, I seem to have inserted myself onto the Marvel “Friends and Family” list for preview screenings. A few weeks ago I got an advance look at The Defenders in a small screening room with about 25 people. On Monday, I went to an IMAX showing of The Inhumans with an audience of several hundred.
The environment in which I see a film influences the way I feel about it. I love going to screenings because they make me feel cool and sophisticated. The Defenders event was in the morning, with a group that included people I’d known for decades, in comfy chairs with excellent sight lines. The Inhumans was in an enormous theater, with an enormous screen, and hundreds of strangers (although there were some people I knew, including a new friend, an old friend and a really old friend.

It’s time for me to review this brand new book for the second time.
Before we get into that paradox, the bottom line is that Thomas Yeates’ recently published Tarzan The Beckoning is a gorgeous book. But there’s a little bit more to this column than that simple appraisal.
Back in the early 90s, a new publisher called Malibu Comics was creating innovative and fun comics. Malibu had just published Tarzan The Warrior by Mark Wheatley and Neil Vokes. As you probably know, Tarzan, perhaps more than any other character, has been rendered by some of the industry’s all time greatest artists – Hal Foster, Burne Hogarth, Russ Manning, Neal Adams, Joe Kubert, John Buscema, Joe Jusko…the list goes on and on.
So when Malibu was promoting this new Tarzan The Warrior comic mini-series in the 90s, they signaled that they were going to try something very different.

This weekend, a whole bunch of us ComicMixers will be making our annual trip to the Baltimore Comic-Con. For the record, that’s Martha Thomases, Adriane Nash, Evelyn Krite, G.D. Falksen, and myself. Glenn Hauman and Robert Greenberger will be in New York at a big ol’ Star Trek convention, Emily S. Whitten will be at Dragon Con, and John Ostrander will be at several Michigan theaters watching Suicide Squad again. Glenn, Robert and Emily also are regulars at Bcc, but this year the show shares Labor Day weekend with these other two east coast shows.
Yes, life is truly one long and never ending comic book convention. I’ve been going to the “big” ones (big as relevant to its time) since 1968. That’s 48 years, which is longer than most of today’s convention-goers have been alive. That’s about five years longer than Kiss has been together,...

Con season has well and truly slid into gear now; with Awesome Con kicking things off a few weeks ago and Sdcc and NerdHQ fast approaching. Of course, con season is really year-round these days; but for me, it starts with Awesome Con and ends with New York Comic Con.
This year’s Awesome Con was, as usual, a great start to the season for me. What I like about the con is that despite only being four years old, it’s managed to integrate various fun aspects of different flavors of cons into a fairly seamless whole – meaning that if you aren’t there for one particular facet of the offerings, there are plenty of others to experience. Here were some of the highlights for me:
The media guests:

For the conclusion of Diamond Comic Distributors Retailer Summit and for the opening of Geppi’s Entertainment Museum’s new exhibit 75 Spirited Years: Will Eisner and The Spirit on Friday, September 25, 2015 – four top creators were asked to provide their interpretations of a concept sketch that had been created by Eisner but never before finished.
One of those creators was Mark Wheatley, the Inkpot, Mucker, Gem, Speakeasy, and Eisner award-winning writer-artist perhaps best known for his successful and often cutting-edge collaborations with fellow writer-artist Marc Hempel. Wheatley will see his piece based on Eisner’s sketch featured on the cover of a limited edition of Overstreet’s Comic Book Marketplace Yearbook 2015-2016. This version will be given to retailers who attend the closing party for the Retailer Summit, which is also the official kick-off of the Eisner exhibit.
“I’m thrilled to have been asked to posthumously collaborate with Will Eisner on this project.

Eisner who directed The Crazies will be directing Warp Graphics horror comic book into a feature film. The American comic book was one of the first books to be published weekly over a four week period. Created by Rickey Shanklin, Marc Hempel and Mark Wheatley who had previously created the acclaimed science fiction comic Mars for First Comics. Blood of the Innocent was their very first horror comic book together. Blood of the Innocent is set in 1888 London and will pit Dracula against Jack the Ripper, so all you horror fans and comic book fans rejoice this could be something special. Breck Eisner’s remake of The Crazies wasn’t half bad, but his latest project, Blood of the Innocent, sounds very, very cool indeed. Imagine a movie featuring both Dracula and Jack the Ripper in a Victorian-set tale of, well, blood and guts.
Variety report the production has received firm financial backing from Inferno Entertainment with Circle of Confusion producing the gig. Eisner is currently attached to The Last Witch Hunter for Summit Entertainment and a remake of Escape From New York, but could still be in line to direct. The script has been provided by Bill Marsilii.
The title is based on a 1980s horror comic which sounds like a horror mish-mash critic and writer Kim Newman might have come up with. It was written by Rickey Shanklin and Mark Wheatley and drawn by Marc Hempel and Wheatley.

With the money in place, it looks like Breck Eisner's next film is going to be an adaptation of the comic book "Blood of the Innocent." Eisner last directed The Crazies and has had a number of projects on his plate including The Creature from the Black Lagoon and Flash Gordon . "Blood of the Innocent," based on the comic by Rickey Shanklin and Mark Wheatley, pits Dracula against Jack the Ripper; Bill Marsilii is scripting and Inferno Entertainment is putting up the cash. They funded the recent dramedy The Kids Are All Right and the upcoming The Grey . Expect to hear more soon!

Good news for those of you hungering to see two horror cinema stalwarts go at it mano-a-mano for the first time. Dracula and Jack the Ripper are getting ready to get it on in Breck Eisner's Blood of the Innocent, based on the acclaimed indie comic by Mark Wheatley, Rickey Shanklin and Marc Hempel. More after the jump. We first broke the news last year that Eisner was developing Blood of the Innocent, but, as is often the case in Hollywood, getting the necessary funding was apparently proving to be a challenge, and some feared the project would linger in limbo. Well fear not! Variety reports that Inferno Entertainment "has acquired underlying rights to the series and is funding development and...

We recently broke the news that director Breck Eisner is working to bring comic book creator Mark Wheatley's Blood of the Innocent to the big screen. Now we've got word of what could be Wheatley's next project, a project that could involve you. Wheatley, along with writer M.J. And to fund his new project, Wheatley is offering to have -- in the pages of the book -- his hero kill off comic fans who pledge their suppport. Following the release of "The Crazies" earlier this year, director Breck Eisner's next project could be a remake of John Carpenter's "Escape from New York." However, Eisner recently extended his option for Alex Raymond's classic sci-fi comic strip "Flash Gordon," with an eye towards directing it down the line.
"'Flash Gordon' is a total passion project for me," said Eisner during an interview with Fearnet. "We've just extended the option and the studio's very committed in trying to make it happen."
"It's just a gigantic 3D experience with years of prep," continued Eisner. "It’s one of those movies you get once in a lifetime to make and for me it's been a passion of mine since I was a kid. Kicking things off, Breck offered his final word on the proposed remake of David Cronenberg's The Brood and why he's not doing it --
"It was only rumored that I was doing that film. Honestly? I just couldn't," says Eisner. "I was approached to do it, and the studios really wanted me to tackle it, but I just had to pass on it. Since Breck Eisner's The Crazies remake entered theaters, Eisner — whose previous work included the 2005 dud Sahara — has become the go-to genre director, lining up an Escape From New York remake as well as a remake of 1980's Flash Gordon. Eisner isn't done, either.

Director Breck Eisner hopes to put his own spin on the vampire trend with a planned adaptation of the comic book Blood of the Innocent.
The 1985 title was penned by Mark Wheatley and Rickey Shanklin and sees Dracula battling Jack the Ripper in Victorian London.
Wheatley told Fear.net he believed Eisner would begin work on the project after finishing production on a remake of Escape from New York.
He revealed that Eisner and writer Bill Marsilii have been pitching Blood of the Innocent to Hollywood studios to secure a deal.
Wheatley said: "The thing that makes the story work - and this, by the way is research done by Rickey Shanklin, my writing partner on the book - is that the events that take place in Bram Stoker's Dracula, date by date, mesh perfectly with the Jack the Ripper murders. That was the core of what started us off on doing the story.

Director Breck Eisner ("The Crazies") will apparently helm a film adaptation of the graphic novel "Blood of the Innocent" reports Fearnet.
The period piece pits Dracula against Jack the Ripper, taking an imaginative spin on fictional events in Bram Stoker's vampire novel and the real life Ripper murders which are actually quite close dates wise.
Co-creator Mark Wheatley tells the site that some studios want Jack, in the comics speculated to be an insane Prince Albert Victor, to become a vampire - something they will not do. There will however be a romantic subplot between Dracula and a woman.
Eisner is expected to work on the project once he wraps his commitment to the "Escape From New York" remake.

Breck Eisner bounced back nicely from Sahara with this year's The Crazies. It didn't make a bunch of money, but it was a pretty good genre movie. And Sahara, of course, is one of the bigger flops of the past decade, a movie that not only didn't start a franchise for Matthew McConaughey, but was also linked to all sorts of improprieties, up to and including lawsuits between the producers and novelist Clive Cussler and bribing local governments where the film was shooting on location.
So, even though The Crazies was only a modest success, Eisner's probably happy not to be subpoenaed. He was linked to two other remakes in the near future, The Creature From the Black Lagoon and Flash Gordon, but now only Flash Gordon remains for him. And honestly, you don't want to be a guy who just directs remakes.

So what's next for the director of the successful new version of The Crazies in the field of horror? Why, what's next for everyone nowadays of course -- a comic to film adaptation!
After getting rolling on remakes of Escape from New York and Flash Gordon, according to FEARnet the next time Eisner dips his toe in our bloodied waters will be for an adaptation of Mark Wheatley's Dracula themed comic book, Blood of the Innocent, co-written by writer Rickey Shanklin with art by Marc Hempel and Wheatley.
"He's trying to make 'Blood of the Innocent' the picture he does after Escape [from New York]," Wheatley tells the site. "The writer, Bill Marsilii, has been working on the pitch now for almost a year. But Breck came on board, I think, back in February." The story couldn't be more simple: "It's Dracula versus Jack the Ripper...That's it. That's the whole concept.

According to Insight Studios comic book creator Mark Wheatley Eisner wants to develop an adaptation of Wheatley's 1980's Dracula comic Blood of the Innocent, which was co-written by writer Rickey Shanklin, with art by Marc Hempel and Wheatley.
The comic book series pitted Dracula against Jack the Ripper, who is a psychotic Prince Albert Victor, Duke of Clarence, in Victorian London. Yes, Dracula versus Jack The Ripper... I'm in! Here is a little description from Wheatley who was recently interview by Fear.net.
So the thing that makes the story work... is that the events that take place in Stoker's Dracula,...

More vampire movies? Yes indeed. Until Twilight stops making money (which will probably be in the year 2015), Hollywood is head over heels for all things vampire. FEARnet (via Styd) has posted a story about a new project that director Breck Eisner (Sahara, The Crazies) is currently developing. They were speaking with comic book author Mark Wheatley who revealed quite a bit about Eisner's future. While he is working on the Escape from New York remake right now, he's recently been pitching an adaptation of the Blood of the Innocent comics, that are described as "Dracula versus Jack the Ripper." Okay, I'll bite (a bad joke). Blood of the Innocent was one of the first American comic book series to be published weekly back in 1985. Wheatley is one of the creators along with Rickey Shanklin and Marc Hempel. In addition to being Dracula vs Jack the Ripper, Wheatley also explains ...

Breck Eisner looks to be the new Len Wiseman or Stephen Sommers -- he's lining up one high concept tentpole after another in the wake of the reasonable opening of his remake of The Crazies. He's got the Escape From New York remake up next, and is booked for the new Flash Gordon movie and there is still occasional talk about remaking David Cronenberg's The Brood, though (fortunately) that seems unlikely to happen. Now he also apparently has an adaptation of the mid-'80s 'Dracula meets Jack the Ripper' indie comic book series Blood of the Innocent, which could happen after Escape From New York. Fear.net talked to Mark Wheatley of Insight Studios, co-writer of Blood of the Innocent. He said, [Eisner is] trying to make Blood of the Innocent the picture he does after Escape. He and the writer have been working on the pitch. The writer, Bill Marsilii,...

The Crazies director tackling vampire comic adaptation
According to an interview conducted by FearNet with comic book creator Mark Wheatley, director Breck Eisner's next project after his forthcoming remake of Escape From New York looks to be a movie based on the comic book Blood of the Innocent, written and drawn by Wheatley with co-writer Rickey Shanklin and artist Marc Hempel.
The film would adapt the 1985 comic book series that had Dracula battling against Jack the Ripper in period London; Eisner is working with writer Bill Marsilii to perfect the script.
Eisner still plans to direct the sci-fi adventure movie Flash Gordon, but according to Wheatley, he may try to tackle Blood of the Innocent first.
Stay tuned for more on this project.

Breck Eisner's recent remake of The Crazies caused many horror fans to sit up and take notice of the genre filmmaker. And though Eisner announced his next projects – Escape from New York and Flash Gordon, the next horror film he hopes to make has not yet been revealed…until now. (And no, it's not a remake of David Cronenberg's The Brood.) Hit the jump for the exclusive word on the film from one of the key men behind it. I just spoke with Insight Studios comic book creator Mark Wheatley (Frankenstein Mobster, Breathtaker), who told me that Eisner's next project will be an adaptation of Wheatley's Dracula comic Blood of the Innocent (cover art from which is pictured above), co-written by...

With all the devastation that's occurred recently across the United States, it's time we comic book fans do a little bit to help. ComicMix contributor (and recent birthday boy) Mark Wheatley has donated a pair of awesome sketches to an Ebay auction collection. The proceeds from these auctions will go to help the Nashville Animal Rescues & Shelters devastated by the recent flood, which caused over 1.9 billion dollars in damages to the area. Both sketches, one of Batman, the other, Conan, are 11" x 14" and are original black marker sketches by the artist. Do yourself a favor and click the links above to visit the auctions, or see what else is available and drive the bids up. It's going to help a great cause, and could win you some great original art.
