Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars and not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones they made in between.
Today, we celebrate royalty. Carrie Fisher had an eclectic career, to say the very least. From her tumultuous childhood with mother Debbie Reynolds to her young career defined as Princess Leia to her final stage as an accomplished writer and advocate for those struggling with depression. Conor O’Donnell and I are joined by Courtney Enlow, associate editor of Syfy Wire fangirls and the co-host on podcasts Trends Like These and Strong Female Characters.
The B-Sides discussed include Under The Rainbow, Garbo Talks, Hollywood Vice Squad, The Time Guardian, Appointment With Death, and She’s Back. Carrie had a long, B-Sidey 80s folks! Of course, Postcards From The Edge comes up, as does Carrie Fisher’s final book...

The Princess Bride might be getting remade — and one key player from the 1987 original isn’t exactly on board with the idea.
Cary Elwes, who starred in The Princess Bride as Westley, quickly hopped on Twitter to express his disdain for the proposition, drawing on one of the film’s famous lines to get his point across.
“There’s a shortage of perfect movies in this world. It would be a pity to damage this one,” he wrote.
Elwes, 56, was, of course, referencing a scene in the film in which his beloved Buttercup (Robin Wright), believing Westley to be dead,...

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced earlier today the creation of a brand new Oscars category: Outstanding achievement in popular film. The new category’s eligibility requirements won’t be revealed until a later date, but the decision is already being widely mocked and criticized by film critics, writers, and reporters on social media.
IndieWire’s awards editor Anne Thompson slammed the category creation as a “desperate ratings attempt.” Many film journalists view the decision to add a popular film category as a way for the Academy to acknowledge blockbuster movies and studio tentpoles that often don’t make the cut for best picture. The problem here, as many writers pointed out on social media, stems from the fact that putting studio blockbusters in a “popular” category suggests they aren’t as artistic as the indie movies that get nominated for best picture.

Each episode of 19 Kids and Counting is chaotic in one way or another, but it's easy to forget that it's not just Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar wrangling a household currently filled with 17 children, but a full television production crew as well.
On a special 19 Kids, we met coordinating producer Courtney Enlow, director Scott Enlow, sound man Jim Goodwin and cameraman John Rotan, all of whom who have been with the family for several years – the Enlows, in particular, have been with the Duggars ever since their very first TLC special, 14 Kids and Pregnant Again.

It's not just the stars of 19 Kids and Counting who are prolifically procreating—those behind-the-scenes are popping out babies, too! During tonight's episode (airing at 9/8c on TLC), we get to watch as Jill Duggar and Jana Duggar help the show's coordinating producer Courtney Enlow deliver her baby girl in China! E! News has an exclusive preview clip of mom's "really wonderful labor" with her "amazing coaches" by her side! The clip shows Courtney, whose husband Scott is also part of the 19 Kids and Counting crew, who went with the Duggar family to Asia back when she was "newly pregnant" in 2013. In "So at that point, it was do I stay or do I go?" she recalls....

Oprah is a holy human, better than the rest of us. As such, she can create greatness from nothing. With her stamp of approval, a mediocre TV chef is the head of a million-dollar cooking empire.
With her support, a “retired” (no longer licensed) psychologist is a self-help talk show star with more than 2,000 episodes under his belt. Here are just a few of the stars who owe it all to the mighty O.
Dr. Phil
Dr. Phil McGraw hasn’t been a licensed psychologist since 2006 when he “retired” from practice. But that hasn’t stopped Dr. Phil the TV show, now in its 12th season. While many question his techniques, abilities, and the show’s concept of good taste, McGraw pulls in $15 million a year and millions or viewers.
Dr. Oz
In the vein of Oprah-approved doctors who seem like fake doctors, Mehmet Oz is actually a very fancy,...

Tiffani Amber Thiessen turns 41 today. While the actress has had a successful career thanks to shows like Beverly Hills: 90210 and White Collar, she’ll always be our sweet, beloved Kelly Kapowski.
On her birthday, we had no choice but to celebrate the eternally youthful Saved by the Bell icon. Here are all the reasons Kelly/Tiffani is our forever crush.
Her taste in dresses? Perfection.
All clothes really. I would wear this outfit every day.
And she had excellent taste in formalwear, even when she wasn’t entirely certain what was going on.
Her fitness game was on point.
So was her modeling game.
Like, so on point. She even got a job modeling in Paris. We never saw it happen and it was never spoken of again, but for one episode she had the possibility of being a Paris model and that was the early ‘90s dream,...

There is nothing like an awareness of the passage of time to make us feel old. Like, the fact that the movie Clueless, the song “Gangsta’s Paradise,” and French Toast Crunch cereal are all 20 years old as of this year. You know what else is 20 years old? Your crush on these 1995 teen heartthrobs. Some aged like fine wine, some maintained success, and some we lost along the way. But nothing fills you with girlish glee quite like looking back at these former teen angels, the prettiest pinups Bop, Tiger Beat, and Teen Beat magazines had to offer.
He got his start on Growing Pains and was Oscar nominated by 20. Today he rolls 20-models deep, but Leonardo DiCaprio circa ’95 will always be our first love.

On Parks and Recreation, a show filled with amazing characters, one stands out as being the most lovable, precious, and…well…
So let’s celebrate Andy Dwyer, the beating heart of the Pawnee Parks Department. We think he’ll be into the celebratory spirit himself.
Here’s why we love Chris Pratt‘s TV alter ego:
1. He appreciates a good meal.
2. He gets very excited for a friend’s success.
How did Pratt go from doofy Andy Dwyer to a Marvel superhero? It wasn’t as easy as it looked.

The election of Barack Obama as President of the United States was historical for so many reasons, including giving us a historically cool First Lady of the United States. Ok, maybe it wasn’t the most important thing about the 2008 election, but Michelle Obama has been approachable, real, and pop culturally aware in ways other FLOTUSes (and POTUSes for that matter) could only dream.
She likes to show us she’s just like us — and that makes her so much cooler than us. We love Michelle, so here are just a few of the times she was the absolute best.
Announcing Argo as Best Picture at the Oscars

The Beygency is clearly under the First Lady’s jurisdiction.

Today is Kate Moss‘ 41st birthday. For more than 20 years, she’s been pretty and thin for a living and has done so superbly. There’s a lot we love about Kate, but her relationship with Johnny Depp is the stuff of legend.
Their tumultuous love was everything we never wanted but couldn’t get enough of. Let’s look back in splendor.
Watch a very ’90s interview with Depp where the actor explains why he always chooses quirky roles.

For some, an Oscar is a ticket to a whole new realm of opportunity. For others, not so much. Halle Berry was the first ever African American to win a Best Actress Oscar — of course the next year she won the honor of kissing Adrien Brody when he accepted his own award (and if not for his good working relationship with Wes Anderson keeping him afloat, Brody would be on this list, too) — but nowadays Berry has a stronger connection to rap songs than award-winning films.
Quite honestly, while pulling this list together, a pattern emerged fairly quickly. Every single person on this list, whose career either stalled or totally died after their win, is either a woman (particularly over 30) and/or a person of color. Hollywood can be an ugly place sometimes — and these nine talented people know that all too well. Check...

It’s 2015, and while that tragically doesn’t mean hoverboards and self-lacing Nikes (yet — we’re still holding out hope) it does mean that it’s time to look back in nostalgia on the amazing 1995 movies turning 20 this year.
Yes, the movies that shaped our youths could now be in college, a year away from legally drinking. But, no matter how much time passes, we’re still totally buggin’ over these awesome ’90s flicks.
Since everyone loves Clueless, watch Iggy Azalea share her favorite quotes from the classic film.

Thanks to the return of Valerie Cherish, 2014 was the year of the comeback — or at least, The Comeback. We hope 2015 follows suit, because there are some long missed celebrities we want back in a big way.

While the former and eternal Seth Cohen still works steadily, we miss seeing him regularly and have always wished he’d blown up way bigger than he has. Hopefully his role in the upcoming Kevin Smith flick Yoga Hosers, as well as his great working relationship with the David Wain/Ken Marino crew behind The Ten and Burning Love, will ensure this is the year everyone remembers what a gem we had in Mr. Leighton Meester.
Brody’s TV father, Peter Gallagher, told Big Morning Buzz Live he tried to convince him to try out his signature eyebrow look.

The Kardashians are the gift that keeps on giving, and this year was no different. This was the year the Kardashians finally started to make the shift from prevalence to relevance, with Kim on the cover of Vogue and Kendall Jenner an in-demand model. But, even as they gain respect, they never lose their sense of drama.
Here are the Kardashian moments that made 2014, as every year, the year of the Kardashian.
The Vogue cover
Kim broke the internet long before #BreakTheInternet. Their cover of April’s Vogue had pearls clutched and jaws dropped. A big deal was made of the usually classy mag’s choice to put a reality television star on its cover, despite the fact she’s a famous millionaire and that’s how magazine covers work.
Wintour later admitted that they got the cover, Gasp, for attention: “I think if we just remain...

There is an eternal set of holiday staples upon which you can rely each and every year: Christmas music, tins of stale cookies, too many eggnogs (you lushes) and, above all else, the awkward family dinners. Yes, we all have those meals with the extended family replete with uncomfortable political debates and questions regarding just when someone intends to marry or reproduce. But, for these four celebrity families, dinner might be a bit more awkward than it is for the rest of us.
The Carter-Knowles Family
After Elevatorgate, the true story of which we may never really know, we imagine this family has had more than its fair share of awkward moments. Hopefully any uncomfortable silences at the dinner table can be broken with Blue Ivy’s flawless dance moves.

In the grand words of Mickey and Sylvia, love is strange. It’s also blind. It’s also kind of unpredictable and definitely questionable at times. Alas, for these 10 celebrity couples, it was also all-too brief (or, for some of them, blessedly short-lived).
Here are the splits that rocked our year (and maybe a couple we totally saw coming, but who are we to kick someone while they’re down?).
The Gossip Table has info on how the Elusive Chanteuse, also known as Mariah Carey, is doing after her split from Nick Cannon.

“Folks, if this is your first time tuning into The Colbert Report, I have some terrible news for you.” With a mighty leap over the word “grippest,” Stephen Colbert began his final episode of The Colbert Report.
For the first half, it was actually a very normal episode, with talk of Syria, a shout-out to the Prescott Group, and a special “The Word” devoted to Colbert’s impact on television. Oh, and he also killed Death. Shooting Grimmy the Grim Reaper, he was rendered immortal. Your standard stuff. I’m pretty sure that’s how Jack Parr went off the air.
But it wasn’t all the fantastically self-important bombast we’ve loved since 2005. For starters, the auction Colbert held for his desk and fireplace earned over $313,000 for the Yellow Ribbon Fund. And, he thanked his audience, his “Nation,” for everything he’s done over the past nine years.

In 2014, we were all about that bass. But Lina Esco and her friends and supporters were thinking a bit more northern; they were all about that basic human right to bare nipples.
The year of nippletasticness has been replete with freedom-fighting famous ladies, from free spirits like Rihanna, Miley Cyrus, Cara Delevingne, and Scout Willis…

This week, news broke that Mark Wahlberg is seeking a governor’s pardon for crimes he committed when he was 16 years old. This is interesting for several reasons. Most know of his checkered legal past, but few knew the exact nature of the crimes Wahlberg committed in his teen years. Specifically, how completely, mind-bogglingly racist they were, attacking two Vietnamese men—beating one man brutally with a stick and partially blinding the other man—calling them “slant-eyed gooks” and “Vietnam fucking shit.” And this 1988 incident isn’t the only violent or racially item on his record. Gawker lists several.
But, clearly, if he’s requesting a pardon, he must feel really bad, right?
Well, he has never apologized to his victims, the Vietnamese community or the general public. And obviously his career has never suffered.
But, clearly, if he’s requesting a pardon, he must be facing some real struggles?...

2014 is nearing its close and, in the world of celebrity, it was a banner year for shade. Some utterly dominated their targets, some failed with a deafening thud of cringe, but they all tried. And, for that, they must be celebrated.
These acts of ultimate celeb-on-celeb judgement are ranked on a scale of 1 to 5 Gs, as in “Good God, Girl, Get a Grip,” in a ranking system devised around my favorite RuPaul’s Drag Race contestant Latrice Royale, the only measurement for this kind of thing.

Here’s the thing about Matthew McConaughey: he’s the most fascinating man alive. He loves bongos, weed, and nudity. He hates deodorant and basic hygiene.
He sells cars but sells you no bull. He’s some kind of magical hippie drifter who just showed up in our lives to make everything better and prettier (but not necessarily more good-smelling) and we should be thankful every single day for that.
So, let’s look back on the greatest life lessons McConaughey ever gave us.
On love and Lange:

The eyes are the window to the soul. Thus, the eyebrows are the meticulously appointed drapes to the soul, the quirkily delightful valances to the soul, or the haphazard blankets hung with duct tape to the soul. Whatever they may be, eyebrows are important. And television today is replete with this fanciest of face art. So we decided they must be celebrated.
Who will win the coveted Sandy Cohen Award for most valuable eyebrows currently on TV?
Let’s examine.

First and foremost, we are so happy to have Eliza Coupe back and she can never leave us again. Next, we love an actor who can play a flawless mix of Type A Perfect and Human Mess Disaster. And no one does it better than Coupe, and her brows are the secret weapon for bringing the whole package together. There’s crazy in those brows.

With tonight’s premiere of State of Affairs, Katherine Heigl is back. And I for one hope hers will be a triumphant return to the Heigl we know and love — and that’s the Heigl almost no one loves.
I like my Heigl like I like my coffee — bitter and mean.
To paraphrase the great leader and philosopher Dark Helmet, Heigl will always triumph, because good is dumb. Sure, nice is important for nothings and nobodies like you and me. It’s integral to our society. But theirs is a different society, one of nonsense and shenanigans and the word “yes” and face creams made of infant foreskins. With a scant few exceptions (I would team this place apart if Tom Hanks was every anything but sunshine juice and unicorn fluff) nice famous people are boring and fake. That’s why old Hollywood was infinitely superior — no one was nice,...

So, you throw a party. The party is super neat, everyone is having fun, things are going fine. Then, it gets late, people start filtering out. There are some belligerent stragglers who used to be fun but got way annoying, and finally they leave, too. You really want to go to bed, but there’s one person still there. Just… there. Just hanging out. And then they never leave, so they just live in your house now and you have to deal with it forever, living out your days with this person who just never left the party.
That’s basically Kim Kardashian.
Every new Kim Kardashian-related piece of news brings with it the same types of reaction. Cries of “slut!” — or perhaps “harlot!” if yours is a fancy slut shame — or pleas for “the children!” because no one ever thinks of them, especially Kardashian, according to many.

First Things First: at Movie City News the "Gurus of Gold" have begun (yes, I'm a part of it again) and as David Poland points out there are seven films that made almost every list: Birdman, Gone Girl, Boyhood, and Unbroken tied at 1st place with Foxcatcher, Selma, and Interstellar just behind them. Most pundits are feeling these as Best Picture threats. Look at the whole chart though to see how everything fared. The highest ranking films that were not on my list (we were asked to submit 15 films) are Wild and Inherent Vice.
Birdman Flies
Early rave reviews at the Venice Film Festival from The Telegraph, Variety and THR and a couple positive but not ecstatic reviews from The Guardian and The Film Stage are up and surely bode well for the film. I'm holding off on reading them as I want the movie fresh when I see it.

Maybe we ended with a whimper but May was a pretty great month here at Tfe with lots of bangs for your buck... not that you are spending bucks (though we always welcome subscriptions -- see sidebar -- to keep us afloat). I know because I had a way more difficult time selecting entries for this "Best of the Month" post than usual. And that's not even including regular series like Monologues, Tuesday Top Ten, or the seasonal May Flowers postings (thank you especially on two of those three to new Tfe contributors Andrew & Andrew (no relation: that's Andrew Kendall and Abstew in the bylines). And then of course we also found time to do the first Oscar predictions for the upcoming race - Always fun to argue about!
So herewith ten highlights from the month...

In Red Carpet Convos, we discuss what the actresses are wearing. Which is really an elaborate excuse (not that we need another) to talk actresses. Today's returning guest is Courtney Enlow Hall from Pajiba.
Nathaniel: Hi Courtney! Welcome back to Red Carpet Convos. This time I will try not to ask you to draw any pigs dressed as Janell Monae.
Courtney: Well as you know I'm exceptionally good at that, so I'm sad about this.
Nathaniel: This week the celebs came out for the annual Met Gala and the theme was "Punk". Because The Met is So counter-culture, you know.
Courtney: The Met is punk as fuck, Ryan Adams-style.
Ginny, Diaz, JLo, Kerry, and Angela Chase
Nathaniel: Actually maybe it is rebellious to go to a museum instead of sitting at home watching reality tv. I rescind my comment. The interesting thing to me about the looks we're about...

The Duggars were so excited about the Great Wall of China, they wanted to spend two days enjoying it on "19 Kids & Counting." It was their last stop on their Asian tour, and they were determined to make the best of it. The family marveled at the wall, while the Chinese were marveling at the size of the Duggar family.
"Just unbelievable to think about how all this was built," Jim Bob said of the wall.
But there was more excitement to be had on this trip. Coordinating producer Courtney Enlow’s water broke five weeks early, meaning she was going to have to have her baby in China. Luckily, her husband is also the show's director, so he was there as well. Still, it was a harrowing and stressful delivery considering the language barrier, and then the baby had to be put into neonatal care for three days.
