Let’s take a look at the comics coming out for this week April 20, 2016, including The Shadow, Captain America, Hawkeye. All this and more in this week's brand new episode of Picks From the Rack!
Power Man and Iron Fist #3 is a really entertaining book that is growing on me. The art style and the interaction between Danny and Luke sells this one. Twilight Zone/Shadow is combining two genres I love. Take the character of The Shadow and put him right in The Twilight Zone? Yes please! All New Hawkeye #8 is one of the best stories with Clint and Kate Bishop. I can’t believe I bought a Hawkeye book. Sam Wilson Captain America #8 is a great team up between Steve, Bucky, and Sam. Three guys who were shield slingers kicking ass and hey Steve is back better than ever! Howard The Duck #6 disappointed me and I hate I...

Marvel used to be wary of the legacy game. Sure, the odd villain or minor hero would pass a mantle on here or there, but it’s never been a consistent move. The publisher was always more content to give characters new titles rather than give them established ones, unless it made narrative sense to do so like when Bucky Barnes became Cap or Kate Bishop earned the Hawkeye moniker.
Meanwhile, DC loves the idea of legacy. Not only are there constantly new Batmen, Green Lanterns and Flashes on a regular basis, there’s even a gang of Robins now (and they weren’t even taken in and trained by Bruce first!). You could even argue that some characters like Wally West were more popular than the ones they replaced. Now Marvel has joined the program and is passing over its largest legacies left and right to great effect and acclaim.

Recently, romance anthologies have made a little bit of comeback with former DC editor Janelle Asselin’s Fresh Romance title and even little one-shots like the Harley Quinn Valentines Special and 2013’s revival of the classic DC series Young Romance. Now, Marvel has gotten into the romance game with Secret Wars: Secret Love bringing a variety of Marvel veterans and newcomers to tell some fun love stories. There is an homage to Ann Nocenti and John Romita Jr’s run on Daredevil complete with a battle against Typhoid Mary, a special team-up between Robbie Reyes and Kamala Khan in the Ghost Racers universe, an extremely non-traditional date night...

Hawkeye #22
Storytellers: Matt Fraction and David Aja
Colorist: Matt Hollingsworth
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Five months after Clint Barton’s faithful dog Lucky showed up with an arrow in his mouth in Hawkeye #21, Hawkeye #22 is finally out and ties up the series’ arc in a violent, emotional bow. (Pun fully intended.) Storytellers Matt Fraction and David Aja bring back both Hawkeyes and show how much Kate Bishop has progressed as a character throughout series, and how much Clint hasn’t progressed in the best of ways. Like last issue, Hawkeye #22 is mainly action, but artists Aja and Hollingsworth raise the stakes with a variety of artistic tricks, including Aja’s trademark multi-panel grids, making Chris Eliopoulos’ lettering look like panels Will Eisner or Frank Miller style, and the use of silhouettes.
Aja’s vivisection of the comics page in Hawkeye #22 makes for smooth, coherent reading and his bigger panels that much more meaningful,...

All-New Hawkeye #1
Written by Jeff Lemire
Art by Ramon Perez
Colors by Ian Herring
Published by Marvel Comics
There are two Hawkeyes in the Marvel Universe. Clint Barton, the original article, who has been carrying the bow, arrows, and occasionally a purple mask since he was a member of “Cap’s Kooky Quartet” back in the 1960s. However, he also passed down his bow and name to Kate Bishop, the most competent member of the Young Avengers back in the mid-00s when the Superhuman Registration Act was still a thing. They went their separate ways during Matt Fraction and Dave Aja’s Hawkeye run, but storytellers Jeff Lemire and Ramon Perez along with colorist Ian Herring bring both Hawkeyes together in All-New Hawkeye #1 through a dual narrative structure, different, yet complementary art styles, and a heavy helping of banter.

Past and present lives collide as Kate and Clint face a threat that will challenge everything they know about how to be a hero, and what it means to be Hawkeye. “To me, Kate is an equal to Clint in terms of who the ‘star’ of the book is,” says writer Jeff Lemire in an interview with Marvel.com. “It’s equal billing. It will be as much Kate’s story as it is Clint’s. The threat they’ll be facing is very much something new. And it’s not strictly a big bombastic super-villain-y kind of thing. It’s something that hits them both on a much more personal level.” Fists, arrows and everything...

There are a lot of reasons to be reading Hawkeye, Matt Fraction and David Aja’s comic about what life is like for the Avenger who isn’t imbued with any godlike powers or power armor. The adventures of Clint Barton and Kate Bishop, the Hawkeyes of two different Coasts, are regularly among the best in superhero comics, and the most inventive.
Like next week’s long-awaited Hawkeye #19, which will feature dialogue almost entirely in sign language.
Taking place after a battle that leaves Clint Barton with severe ear damage, the story will explore how he deals with a sudden loss of hearing.

Marvel publishes some weird comics featuring talking raccoons, Norse gods, and unfrozen WW2 vets blasting off into space but the way they number their comics is even weirder. If they’re not 1.1 this, they’re 1.50 that, and, in the case of Hawkeye, they’re numbering backwards! Last month saw the release of Hawkeye #16 and this month it’s Hawkeye #15.
The reason was that artist David Aja hadn’t finished work on this issue so Marvel skipped ahead and printed the Annie Wu-completed issue instead (Wu draws the Kate Bishop issues, Aja the Clint Barton ones). But the wait is definitely worth it. Regular readers will know David Aja – who won 2 Eisners last year for his work on this series – does nothing but fine work, and his art in this issue is of his usual ridiculously high quality standard.

Since the release of The Avengers, Hawkeye has blown up to be one of the leading titles on the shelves, thanks to the clever portrayal by Jeremy Renner. However, Hawkeye is still more than a pretty face and sarcastic quips. Matt Fraction helped prove to the new Hawkeye audience that this is still a character, and most importantly a character without superpowers. In Matt Fraction’s series, there’s a particular emphasis on Hawkeye’s humanity, and from the beginning pages it is clear to see that Hawkeye usually has bad days.
Fraction shows Hawkeye not as a hero, but rather a man that is put in the wrong place at the wrong time. He is beaten, broken, smashed, and eventually triumphant as we begin to learn about his life without the Avengers. This analysis is rarely seen in a lot of characters, especially with those that are affiliated with the Avengers.

Matt Fraction’s Hawkeye continues to be one of the most genius and consistently top quality comics Marvel is putting out. The last couple of issues have been resplendent – Hawkeye #11 aka the Pizza Dog issue, was easily one of the best comics of 2013, telling Pizza Dog’s story from his perspective. With minimal dialogue, the issue was done mostly in symbols that a dog would see the world through, designed to perfection by Eisner award winning artist David Aja.
Hawkeye #12 was another great issue as the comic took the perspective of Clint’s long lost brother, now a homeless man, and told the heartbreaking story of the tough childhood the two brothers shared and how Clint grew up with a chip on his shoulder. Hawkeye Annual #1 continues this trend of non-Hawkeye comics, or at least non-Clint Barton/Hawkeye-focused comics, as this issue is devoted to Kate Bishop/Hawkeye, Clint’s protege (I know,...

Picking ten artists out of the vast array of talent working in comics today is an impossible task. These artists were chosen based on the uniqueness of their style compared to the “house” style of Marvel and DC, their ability to create character, setting, and plot through their art, and also on the quality of the covers that they’ve done. All of the artists on this list have regular interior work so artists like J.H. Williams, Bryan Lee O’Malley, and Alex Ross can’t be found here (even though Alex Ross’ Justice League is the cover image). Without further ado (and in honor of the late Wizard magazine), here are the top ten hottest current artists in comics in no particular order.

As I write this, The Avengers 2 rumour of the week is that Hawkeye, played by Jeremy Renner in the first movie, is going to be recast – and I couldn’t be happier. Renner was such a flatliner in the Avengers movie that replacing him with someone who has charisma and presence is essential, especially now that Matt Fraction’s reinvention of the character has established Hawkeye as charming, funny and likeable, and brought him to readers’ attentions as a major character in his own right.
Hawkeye, for those who don’t know, is Clint Barton, a member of the Avengers, whose power is that he’s very good with a bow and arrow, and that he uses a range of trick arrows to accomplish various tasks. He’s also skilled at martial arts but, like Black Widow, is essentially an Avengers team member who looks like an ordinary guy...

Saga is always exceptional, and this week is no exception. Separated by the massive storm, follow both arrow-slingers as they struggle to help those who need it most make it out of this tragic event in one piece. Vexed newcomer Miranda Raison has insisted that she will be a "completely different" influence on the show to her predecessor Lucy Punch. The Spooks actress will play Di Georgina Dixon, sidekick to Toby Stephens's Di Jack Armstrong, in the BBC comedy drama's second series. She was brought in when Punch quit her role as Di Kate Bishop after the first edition of Vexed, which aired during 2010. Speaking to Digital Spy about her experiences on Vexed, Raison recalled: "When I arrived the producer said to me 'rather than thinking in terms of the old character, it is a completely different and new character'. "[Lucy] was absolutely brilliant... Lucy's bloody good, she's an amazingly natural comedienne. But [Georgina's] all brand new. I think what her and Jack have in common is that they both think they're (more)...

Marvel Comics has announced that they will be releasing a brand new ongoing series starring Clint Barton, aka Hawkeye. The upcoming series will be helmed by writer Matt Fraction and artist David Aja who will be collaborating for the first time since working alongside Ed Brubaker on Immortal Iron First back in 2006.
The new series, simply titled Hawkeye, will take off immediately after the events of ‘Avengers vs X-Men’ and have Barton searching for his true purpose as a ranked superhero in the Avengers team. There’s no doubting that Marvel is trying to capitalize on all of their Avengers team members with the upcoming film from Joss Whedon arriving in theaters next month. Despite the potential for both creative character exploration and development, Hawkeye hasn’t always had the greatest success in his own solo series.
Fortunately, he won’t be the only regular superhero to be featured in the upcoming title.

As it turns out, Demi Lovato doesn't have what it takes to fight alongside "The Avengers."
Earlier in the week, the "Camp Rock" actress, teen singer and troubled Disney star found herself at the center of rumors suggesting her involvement in "The Avengers," Marvel Studios and director Joss Whedon's upcoming superhero flick starring Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Evans as Captain America and Chris Hemsworth as Thor.
Now, sources close to Lovato and Marvel are both completely denying the actress' involvement. The Hollywood Reporter reports that "part of the problem in hiring the actress is that she's currently in rehab 'for emotional and physical issues.'"
There was also the problem of figuring out which role Lovato would occupy. We did our best to puzzle it out, naming Janet Van Dyne, Stature, Kate Bishop and Karolina Dean as possible candidates. Turns out that she'll play none of these characters,...

Is Demi Lovato one of Earth's mightiest heroes? According to a new rumor, she just might be.
The "Camp Rock" actress and teen singer recently made headlines for checking into a rehab facility for emotional issues in the middle of a tour with the Jonas Brothers, and now she's making headlines for an entirely different reason. A new report suggests that Lovato is going to add some superhero status to her growing resume as a cast member in "The Avengers."
The rumor comes from a Radar Online report centering on Lovato's recent holiday break from rehab. The report concludes with a matter of fact declaration: "RadarOnline.com has learned Demi is up for a role in the new 'Avengers' movie that will start shooting April 1."
Of course, without confirmation from Marvel Studios officials or someone from Lovato's corner, it's best to break out the salt shaker when approaching this latest rumor.
