Ed Ruscha, running late to class one day in 1950, accidentally stiff-armed a glass-panel door at his junior high in Oklahoma City. “My hand went right through that door, all the students looked up, and there I was just dripping with blood,” says Ruscha, sipping a macchiato while seated behind a marble-topped desk in the skylit library of his Culver City studio, a sprawling 9,000-square-foot affair that was previously a movie prop house and before that an aerospace factory for Howard Hughes.

Less than a month after a lawsuit was filed against the chairman of A3 Artists Agency seeking to block its sale, rival Gersh says it has closed a deal for the digital and alternative departments of the talent firm.
Some forty five staffers — twenty five of which are agents — will move over to the Beverly Hills-based Gersh as part of the agreement, bringing the total number of employees at the agency to around 350, with about 125 agents.
“The combined resources and expertise within the agency will unlock unparalleled opportunities for our clients,” said Bob Gersh, David Gersh and Leslie Siebert, co-presidents of Gersh, adding, “A3’s leadership team cultivated two outstanding departments. Their demonstrated success quickly positioned them as compelling additions to the agency.”

Bjørn Gulden, chief executive of Adidas, has given his first in-depth public comment on the fallout of his company’s relationship with Kanye West following the rapper-designer’s repeated antisemitic outbursts last year.
“I think Kanye West is one of the most creative people in the world. Both in music and what I call street culture,” Gulden said after being questioned about West on the Norwegian podcast In Good Company.
“He’s extremely creative and has together with Adi, created a Yeezy line that was very successful. And then, as a creative person, he made some statements which wasn’t that good. And that caused Adi to break the contract and withdraw the product. Very unfortunate because I don’t think he meant what he said, and I don’t think he’s a bad person – it just came across that way.”

On May 1, the Gersh agency took on an equity partner for the first time since its founding in 1949, selling a 45 percent stake to a New York-based financier, Crestview Partners, for an undisclosed sum. Now it’s figuring out what to do with that cash. Up first? Trying to buy a rival.
The Beverly Hills-based talent firm, run by co-presidents David and Bob Gersh and Leslie Siebert, is said to have approached literary agency Verve with an overture to talk, but was rebuffed, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter. Gersh insiders say that no meetings were had, or offers made, to Verve. A rep for Verve stated: “Gersh reached out a month ago to get together which we politely declined and there has been no further interaction or communication.”
Verve, led by CEO Bill Weinstein since his promotion early this year, has looked to reach beyond its roots as a boutique literary agency.

Cari Ross, the veteran marketing and publicity executive who joined Gersh last year to lead its communications efforts, died Wednesday, the talent agency’s co-president Leslie Siebert told staff members. She was 59.
She died in Los Angeles, and a heart condition was cited as the cause of death.
Ross joined the Beverly Hills-based firm in July 2022 as its first in-house communications executive and as senior vp led efforts to promote Gersh’s corporate announcements, media relations and industry initiatives.
Before joining the agency, run by co-presidents David and Bob Gersh and Siebert, Ross ran her own company, Balance Public Relations, and worked on marketing campaigns for awards season in the Oscars, Emmys, SAG Awards, Tony Awards and Golden Globes space. She also coordinated fundraisers and media events for talent.
Ross also worked for years at public relations giant ID PR in New York, serving as senior vp, and at the firm Baker Winokur Ryder.

Marking the first time in 70 years that it hasn’t been totally owned within the family, The Gersh Agency has sold a 45% stake to New York-based private equity firm Crestview Partners.
The talent agency hasn’t divulged the amount of equity its new partner is investing, but both sides said the aim is to accelerate Gersh’s domestic and international growth by expanding firm resources to support a growing staff and client roster. Deal was announced by Gersh Co-Presidents Bob and David Gersh and Brian Cassidy, Co-President and Head of Media at Crestview.
Longtime Senior Managing Partner Leslie Siebert has been elevated to Co-President, alongside David and Bob Gersh. Siebert will also join the Gersh brothers and members of Crestview on a newly formed board of directors. After nearly 75 years of family ownership, Gersh Agency has sold a 45% stake in the company to private equity firm Crestview Partners.
Gersh Agency chiefs Bob Gersh and David Gersh said the investment from Crestview is designed to help the agency grow in new areas to better represent its core client base. The deal calls for the brothers to continue to stay at the helm. Leslie Siebert, Gersh Agency veteran who has long served as managing partner, has been promoted to co-president status alongside Bob and David Gersh.
Gersh Agency’s sale comes as all of its major talent agency competitors have brought in additional partners and investors to help provide much-needed resources and financial support for a notoriously volatile business. The brothers assert they will maintain control even as they bring in capital from Crestview. In 2019, Crestview Partners acquired a one-third stake in ICM Partners for about $150 million — a deal...

American rapper Kanye West has responded to being dropped by a number of top partnerships, including Adidas, talent agency CAA, film and television programming company MRC and luxury fashion label Balenciaga, because of his anti-Semitic comments on social media, reports ‘Variety’.

As the fallout from Kanye West’s anti-Semitic rants continues, the rapper made an “unannounced” visit to a Skechers corporate office in LA on Wednesday and was escorted from the building.
In a statement, the footwear brand said West — also known as Ye — arrived “unannounced and without invitation” and was “engaged in unauthorized filming.” Two Skechers executives “escorted him and his party” out “after a brief conversation.”
The company further said it “is not considering and has no intention of working with West. We condemn his recent divisive remarks and do not tolerate antisemitism or any other form of hate speech. In what may be the toughest blow, ego-wise, in the fallout from Kanye West’s antisemitic rants last week, Forbes announced today that the rapper is no longer on its glitzy list of the world’s billionaires. A chief cause for the change was Adidas ending its relationship today with Ye, as he is now known. He had been among the first hip-hop moguls to make the list.
“Without Adidas, Ye is worth 400 million,” the Forbes piece reads. “The remainder of Ye’s [as Kanyer is now called] fortune, Forbes estimates, comes from real estate, cash, his music catalog, and a 5 stake in ex-wife Kim Kardashian’s shapewear firm, Skims. (A source close to Skims told Forbes Ye hasn’t been involved with the brand since its 2019 launch.)

Adidas is the latest of Ye’s big-name partnerships to end its business relationship with the hip-hop star after he made repeated antisemitic comments and espoused disproven conspiracy theories last week. The company faced calls from all quarters yesterday to drop the former Kanye West from its list of partners.
Adidas issued a statement which read, in part, that the company will “end production of Yeezy branded products and stop all payments to Ye and his companies. adidas will stop the adidas Yeezy business with immediate effect.”
It indicated the cost of the move would be 246 million in 2022 alone.
The growing list of companies and projects which have separated from the controversial rapper now includes Adidas, Balenciaga, CAA and Gap, which Ye pulled away from himself last month. Further, MRC said Monday that it was not moving forward with its recently completed documentary about the musician. Endeavor CEO Ari Emanuel,...

Kanye West is no longer represented by CAA. The agency is the latest business to cut ties with the rapper following his recent anti-Semitic outbursts and amid a growing call for a Hollywood boycott against him, Deadline has confirmed.
CAA represented West for touring only. He signed with the agency in 2016, and has not toured since.
West has stoked controversy in the past, but his recent spate of anti-Semitic rants have become too much for business partners to tolerate. Endeavor CEO Ari Emanuel, Gersh’s Bob Gersh and UTA’s Jeremy Zimmer are among the most recent big names to speak out over West, who has since been dropped by fashion house Balenciaga. Sportswear company Adidas is facing similar pressure.
Word of CAA dropping West follows news earlier today that MRC was not moving forward with its documentary about the rapper.

Film and television studio MRC is shelving a completed documentary focused on Kanye “Ye” West in light of the artist’s recent antisemitic comments.
“This morning, after discussion with our filmmakers and distribution partners, we made the decision not to proceed with any distribution for our recently completed documentary about Kanye West,” CEOs Modi Wiczyk and Asif Satchu, as well as COO Scott Tenley, wrote in an open letter on Monday. “We cannot support any content that amplifies his platform.”
MRC was in talks with distributors before this latest decision. When asked if the film was sent to any film festivals, an MRC representative responded that “all activities are being pulled.”
In their open letter, the leaders wrote that West has helped “mainstream” antisemitism in the current climate. “The silence from leaders and corporations when it comes to Kanye or antisemitism, in general,...

Three of Hollywood’s top agency chiefs are now calling on the entertainment industry to cut ties with Kanye West given the rapper and fashion mogul’s anti-Semitic rhetoric on multiple platforms and interviews.
On Sunday evening, UTA chief Jeremy Zimmer sent a company-wide memo to staff titled “Rise of Anti Semitism and Hate,” writing that West’s comments “embolden others to amplify their vile beliefs.”
Zimmer made reference to a widely circulated Oct. 23 photo of a group of seven people who stood on a 405 freeway overpass in Los Angeles with signs that included “Kanye is right about the Jews,” as well as The Mapping Project, an anonymous effort that purported to show links between Jewish businesses in Massachusetts and “support for the colonization of Palestine.”

Hollywood talent agents are famously competitive with one another. Whether big or boutique, agencies parry and joust in wooing talent and sealing deals.
But some issues transcend money and ego. Hate speech is one of them.
Bob Gersh, longtime leader of the agency founded by his father in the 1960s, has watched Kanye West’s abhorrent outbursts of antisemitism over the past two weeks with dismay. On Saturday, the Gersh Agency chief reached out to Variety to express support for Endeavor CEO Ari Emanuel’s call for businesses to condemn and cut ties with West. That list includes Apple, Spotify and Adidas. West has already had accounts restricted on Twitter and Instagram because of the nature of his comments about Jewish people.
“This is as low as it can get,” Gersh told Variety of West’s recent comments. “This is the most blatant form of hatred and antisemitism one could imagine.

Bart Walker will join Gersh as Senior Partner in the New York office. Walker, along with ICM indie film head Jessica Lacy, have been fixtures of the film festivals and the independent filmmaking sphere for as long as I can remember. Lacy recently left to join Range Media Partners. He had been talking with agencies and management companies and landing Walker is a coup for Gersh.

American acting icon Christopher Lloyd is set to join Simon Pegg and Minnie Driver in the cast of a dark comedy called “Nandor Fodor and The Talking Mongoose,” TheWrap can reveal exclusively.
“Nandor” comes from writer and director Adam Sigal (“Chariot”) and is filming now in Leeds in the United Kingdom, with Lloyd due to arrive on set later this week.
The film stars Pegg as Dr. Nandor Fodor, a real-life, famed Hungarian-American psychoanalyst, author, journalist and “parapsychologist” who was a leading authority on poltergeists, hauntings and other paranormal phenomena and in the 1930s advanced the theory that such hauntings could be the result of past unresolved mental tensions. The film is based on a true story of Fodor’s pursuit of “Gef,” an allegedly talking mongoose that inhabited the home of a family on the Isle of Man and attracted many ghost hunters, as well as the British tabloids,...

He was super agent Phil Gersh’s signature client from the start of his acting career through his death in 1957, all through his heyday in the 1940s and 1950s in The Maltese Falcon, Casablanca, The African Queen, Key Largo, Treasure of the Sierra Madre and The Caine Mutiny. Now, Humphrey Bogart is back with the Gersh Agency, which has signed the Humphrey Bogart Estate.

Paradigm Talent Agency has laid off about 30 agents, according to an individual with knowledge of the situation. The cuts, which took place on Friday, represented about 4% of Paradigm’s workforce.
Most of the employees impacted from the cuts came from Paradigm’s music division, which represents a number of major acts, including Halsey, Coldplay, The Lumineers and Ed Sheeran.
The layoffs come 7 months after Paradigm chief Sam Gores decided to “shut down discussions” with United Talent Agency on a potential merger. The cuts aren’t connected to the near-merger with UTA or Paradigm’s lingering stalemate with the Writers Guild of America over packaging fees, according to the individual with knowledge of the situation. Overall, Paradigm has added more than 100 employees in the last year.

The Gersh Agency is aiming for the fences by launching a baseball division. As part of the move, Gersh Sports has hired Paragon Sports Management's Joseph Longo and Matt Walker as division head/sports rep and vp business development, respectively.
Longo and Walker bring a roster of talent that includes Major League Baseball players David Dellucci, Luis Ayala and Brett Tomko as well as retired stars Matt Williams and Lenny Dykstra. Walker also adds fighting champion Randy "The Natural" Couture of the UFC to Gersh Sports' client list.
"We love these guys who we're getting into business with," said agency co-president Bob Gersh, a lifelong Dodgers fan. "We think with the way the entertainment business is moving, athletes really have a desire to cross over and work in TV and film."
Longo repped baseball players for 12 years until Michael Ovitz hired him to run AMG's baseball division. Three years later, when the Firm acquired AMG, Longo left to launch Paragon Sports Management.
