It’s not all laughs for Sofía Vergara in Griselda.
Beneath the glitz and glamour of ’70s and ’80s Miami lies a much darker side — and an antihero playing a dangerous game. Inspired by a true story, the limited series from creators Eric Newman and Andrés Baiz follows Griselda Blanco, an ambitious business woman and devoted mother who’s responsible for creating one of the most profitable cartels in history. With her lethal blend of savagery and charm, Griselda navigates business and family as she rises to the top of the industry, earning the title of “the Godmother.”
Available to stream on Netflix now, Griselda reunites the team behind Narcos and Narcos: Mexico, including Newman, Baiz, Doug Miro, Ingrid Escajeda, and Carlo Bernard, who all serve as executive producers, alongside Vergara and Luis Balaguer with Latin World Entertainment. While Sofía Vergara was delighting millions of viewers for more than a decade as Gloria Pritchett on Modern Family, she was thinking about Griselda Blanco.
For 15 years, Vergara pored over the life of the woman known as the cocaine trade pioneer — who also earned the nicknames “The Godmother” and “The Black Widow” — for transforming the drug trade from Colombia to the United States, making her biggest mark in Miami, in the 1970s to the early 2000s.
Narcos boss Eric Newman had also spent time thinking about Blanco. The executive producer behind Netflix’s hit drug cartel franchise says he always wanted to tell the Colombian queenpin’s story and even considered bringing her into the Narcos fold while working the flagship series and spinoff Narcos: Mexico.
“The challenge that I found immediately with Griselda [Blanco] is that her story is so compelling; she’s such an anomaly,” he tells The Hollywood Reporter.

After “Narcos” and “Narcos: Mexico,” director Andrés Baiz was hesitant to return to the world of cartel crime dramas. At least until “Modern Family” star Sofía Vergara and her business partner Luis Balaguer approached Baiz and executive producer Eric Newman with the story of Griselda Blanco, the Cocaine Godmother.
“I’m going to be very honest here. Because I’m Colombian and had been working in ‘Narcos’ for seven years, I was a little bit over [the subject matter]. I wanted to do something different,” Baiz, who has also directed episodes of “The Sandman,” told TheWrap.
But when he was given the opportunity to guide Vergara through her prestige drama debut by directing and producing all six episodes of “Griselda,” Baiz changed his mind.

Following the success of the Narcos franchise, Netflix is diving headfirst back into another biographic series about the drug empire led by Griselda Blanco with Sofia Vergara. The new limited series, consisting of six episodes, is coming to Netflix globally in January 2024. Here’s what you need to know about Griselda.
News of the show first came about in November 2021, with Illuminerdi first reporting that a Narcos spin-off was in development with the same team. Days later, we also reported that the show was in development, and just a day after that, Netflix officially unveiled the title but was keen to stress that “there is no association or crossover between the shows.”
It’s taken a long time for Griselda to come to our screen. It reportedly took Latin World Entertainment eight years for the series to be picked up by a network.

In 1994, when Sofia Vergara was 22, she landed a major hosting gig with Univision. The show catapulted her to prominence in Miami, but she couldn’t find an agent.
“I was very young when I signed my first contract, and I did it myself,” Vergara says. “I needed a manager, and that didn’t exist for a Latina personality. It existed for Latina musicians, but not on TV.”
Clearly things have changed. Riding the wave of her success with “Modern Family,” where she played the affable Gloria Pritchett from 2009 to 2020, Vergara has topped the Forbes list for seven consecutive years as the highest-paid female actor in the world, raking in $43 million last year. Hispanic media startup Raze has struck a deal with WarnerMedia’s Turner Latin America to coproduce and finance the first Raze Awards, aimed at celebrating Latino digital creators.
The first edition of the Raze Awards, scheduled for September 2019, will feature entertainers from across the globe in a one-hour event that will be televised throughout Latin America on Tntla.
Raze — co-founded by Emiliano Calemzuk, actress Sofia Vergara (“Modern Family”), and Vergara’s longtime business partner Luis Balaguer — is hoping to build a new awards franchise to reach young millennial Hispanic audiences. The Raze Awards are patterned on other kudocasts like the MTV Music Awards or, perhaps more on point, MTV Latin America’s MTV Miaw awards (originally called the MTV Millennial Awards). A biographical series about Grammy-winning Spanish global hit singer Julio Iglesias is in the works. Miami-based Disney Media Distribution Latin America (Dmdla) has announced at the La Screenings that it has optioned the worldwide rights to “Confessable Secrets,” the memoir of Iglesias’ former manager, Alfredo Fraile.
Fraile is credited for having steered the singing career of Iglesias, who was a reserve goalkeeper for Spain’s Real Madrid until serious injuries from a car accident ruined his aspirations for a career in soccer. Fraile was with Iglesias for 15 years, during which Iglesias sold hundreds of millions of albums in 14 languages worldwide.
The 13-episode series will be co-produced with Miami-based shingle Cinemat, said Fernando Barbosa, senior VP and general manager, Walt Disney Media Distribution, Latin America & U.S. Hispanic Market.
“We started the bio-series genre in 2015 with our show about the singer Juan Gabriel, which scored high ratings on Telemundo,” said Barbosa.
