Stars: Victoria Lucie, Royce Pierreson, Harriet Walter, Joanne Rogers, Thomas Bliss, Sally Geake, Richard Heap, Chris Donnelly | Written and Directed by Oliver Pearn
For his feature debut, writer/director Oliver Pearn crafts a story set in 1964 on Aldernay (one of the Channel Islands). Agnes (Victoria Lucie) works as a telephone operator to connect the whole island through her switchboard, a role she considers leaving with her wedding day moving ever closer. Her typical day is shaken by a distressing call from a woman asking for help, which leaves Agnes intent on helping however possible.
While On The Line is confined to a single room, the story unfolds through phone calls to have conversations audibly convey what is happening. Pearn heightens the tension to terrifically make it an engrossing watch, particularly when aided by a compelling lead performance. Lucie effectively captures Agnes’ investment in this situation, as she tries proactively helping through investigations from her workstation,...

Academy Award winner Martin Scorsese is executive producing a “Gangs of New York” TV series after helming the 2002 feature film.
Based on Herbert Asbury’s 1927 nonfiction book, “The Gangs of New York” follows the rival gangs of late-1800s New York City. Scorsese is set to direct the first two episodes of the series, which was developed internally at Miramax TV and penned by playwright and TV writer Brett Leonard.
Per Deadline, the upcoming series will not center on the same characters as the film, which starred Leonardo DiCaprio, Daniel Day-Lewis, and Cameron Diaz. Scorsese’s managers Rick Yorn and Chris Donnelly are also executive producing the upcoming show, which will be taken out to buyers in November.
Scorsese previously was attached to a 2013 TV adaptation of “The Gangs of New York,” which would have expanded the portrayal to gangs in other major metropolitan areas at the turn of the century,...

Exclusive: A high-profile TV series project from Miramax Television based on Herbert Asbury’s 1927 non-fiction book The Gangs of New York is about to hit the premium/streaming marketplace. Oscar winner Martin Scorsese, who directed the 2002 feature adaptation of the book, is attached to executive produce the potential series and direct the first two episodes.
Details about the drama, from playwright/TV writer Brett Leonard (Shantaram), are sketchy but I hear this is a new take on the story with new characters that were not featured in the movie, which starred Leonardo DiCaprio, Daniel Day-Lewis and Cameron Diaz.
Asbury’s book details the confrontations between rival gangs in New York in the mid- to late-1800s, prior to the domination of the Italian-American Mafia during Prohibition in the 1920s. That latter period was the subject of HBO’s drama Boardwalk Empire, which Scorsese executive produced and won an Emmy for directing the pilot episode.

Exclusive: Hot off the Toronto Film Festival’s Midnight Madness premiere of the genre film Pearl, writer-director Ti West has signed for management at Lbi Entertainment.
He continues to be repped by UTA and lawyered by Stephen Clark.
West made some headlines during his Pearl TIFF premiere when the A24 film ended, and was followed by a teaser trailer for MaXXXine, the character played by Mia Goth who first appeared in the film X.
West has become an emerging filmmaker who will grow into bigger budgets and subject matter, as James Wan has. He’s got an original film idea he’ll develop after MaXXXine wraps up his trilogy, and he is percolating several TV projects on which he’ll be writer and EP, directing the pilots at least.

Ace Spade (Alexander Ludwig) is a natural athlete with professional wrestling “in his blood.” The sky — in this case, presumably the WWE — is the limit for that one. But in the full-length trailer for the upcoming Starz drama “Heels,” Ace is simply trying to “hold it together.”
His brother Jack (Stephen Amell) isn’t having a much easier go of things. For starters, he can’t even figure out who wins the big Jack vs. Ace main event. Maybe go play soccer with your boy instead.

No, that’s not WWE’s Adam “Edge” Copeland in the first-look photos for Starz’s upcoming series, “Heels,” it’s his “Vikings” co-star Alexander Ludwig. But the resemblance certainly is uncanny, which bodes well for pro-wrestling fans who were hoping the Ludwig- and Stephen Amell-led drama had an authentic aesthetic.

Exclusive: Marginalized by a version rushed for the 2017 Toronto Film Festival weeks before Harvey Weinstein’s banishment and The Weinstein Company’s implosion, Alfonso Gomez-Rejon’s The Current War has a new cut and the kind of second chance that most prematurely premiered festival films never get. Upstart 101 Studios has closed a deal for domestic distribution rights and will make The Current War its first substantial theatrical release, eyeing August. That distributor, which paid around $3 million for the rights, has made a wide release commitment, after Gomez-Rejon presented them with an overhauled picture that added five scenes and still came in a good ten minutes shorter than the cut that premiered two Toronto festivals ago.

Yorn represents an impressive list of movie stars, including Jonah Hill, Justin Timberlake, Jessica Biel and DiCaprio. The strength of his client list stands out in particular because it is such a small firm. To remedy that, Yorn has hired Thor Bradwell and Chris Donnelly from Wme, bringing on rising stars like Diana Agron, as well as Martin Scorsese. He also hired former independent agent Ilene Feldman. There is either a couple of football fans or Jerry Maguire/Moneyball with this year’s most liked unproduced screenplay. Close to 300 hundred film executives provided with the Black List creators a top ten of their favorite screenplays of the year and the consensus first overall pick (with 65 votes) comes from the recently featured in Variety (10 Screenwriters to Watch 2012) tandem of Rajiv Joseph & Scott Rothman and their drama which has nothing to do with enlisting in the armed forces. Draft Day – about the day in the life of a fictitious Buffalo Bills Gm appears to currently be in turnaround — which only means I expect to see this greenlight perhaps a little later than sooner – worth noting: top spot almost guarantees that the film will indeed go into production (2006, 2010 and 2011 are the exceptions.) Among the more alluring logline subjects we find on the list, I’d be keen on reading the...
