Olivia Cooke, Jamie Bell to Lead Italy-Set Romance ‘Takes One To Know One’ from ‘Pam & Tommy’ Writer
“Sound of Metal” star Olivia Cooke, soon to be returning to “House of the Dragon” for its second season, and BAFTA winner Jamie Bell, recently seen in “All of Us Strangers,” are set to star in “Takes One to Know One.” The film is billed as an “unconventional and contemporary take on romance.”
The feature comes from Italian director Nathalie Biancheri, working from a 2022 Black List screenplay by WGA-nominated writer Brooke Baker. Production is due to commence in Italy later this year, with Cornerstone handling international sales and distribution and and launching sales at Cannes and co-repping the U.S. with CAA Media Finance.
“Takes One to Know One” follows Eleanor (Cooke) and Lucas (Bell). When the two meet in Rome, their chemistry is electric. With a shared passion for art, Italy and each other, it looks like the start of something life-changing. The biggest stumbling block: they are both in relationships with other people.

Scarlett Johansson, Margot Robbie, Cate Blanchett, and Dave Bautista all star in projects at one of the biggest Berlin markets in recent memory, post and pre-pandemic.
Whether this year’s high-rollers will sell is the crux at a 2024 European Film Market which AGC Studios’ Stuart Ford is describing as a “watershed market.”
The big question is: “Was the tepid AFM an anomaly brought about by the strikes and a broader industry pullback in 2023? Or was the AFM an indicator of a more sustained downturn?” he asks.
It’s early days in 2024 but “signs for Berlin are quite positive,” says Ford, who is bringing to market three new star-driven thrillers starring Will Smith –action movie “Sugar Bandits” – Sylvester Stallone and Michelle Yeoh.
“One week ago, I would have said this is going to be a dry market. Now it’s going to be a busy market,” agrees Martin Moszkowicz at Constantin Film,...

Up next from Wyrmwood writer/director Kiah Roache-Turner is a shark attack survival movie titled Beast of War, and Variety brings news that the shark horror movie has been acquired for distribution by Signature Entertainment for the U.K. and Ireland, and Well Go USA for North America.
The period Wii film is loosely based on real-life events.
Beast of War “follows a warship carrying hundreds of Australian soldiers across the Timor Sea to the frontline of WWII. Suddenly, Japanese fighter jets scream out of the sky, and within minutes the ocean becomes a hell of steel, fire, oil and blood. While a handful of soldiers build a makeshift raft from floating debris as they cling to their lives, their biggest battle is yet to come. In the dark below, the ultimate apex predator — a great white shark — hunts in the wreckage and is drawn to the smell of fresh blood in the water.

Wyrmwood Road of the Dead and Wyrmwood: Apocalypse director Kiah Roache-Turner started the year by wrapping production on the spider-themed horror film Sting, and now Deadline reports that he’s moving on to a different “nature run amok” story, a World War II-set shark thriller called Beast of War.
Roache-Turner is reuniting with Cornerstone, the company that’s handling worldwide sales and distribution for Sting, on this new project. Cornerstone will be presenting Beast of War to potential buyers at the upcoming American Film Market.
The script has the following synopsis: 1942. A warship carries hundreds of Australian soldiers across the Timor Sea to the frontline of WW2. Suddenly, Japanese fighter jets scream out of the sky, and within minutes the ocean becomes a hell of steel, fire, oil, and blood. With the vessel destroyed, a handful of soldiers build a makeshift raft from floating debris as they cling to their lives.

In early January this year, the Guy Ritchie spy comedy thriller Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre — a typically frenetic Ritchie actioner starring Jason Statham, Aubrey Plaza and Hugh Grant — started earning decent figures around the world. In Russia, it topped 9 million, while in Australia it passed 4 million. In Saudi Arabia — where action films have often punched above their weight — the film helped ensure Avatar: The Way of Water enjoyed a solitary week at number one (and was only kept off the top spot itself by local hit Sattar). So far, so “yeah, so what?”
But the interesting thing about Operation Fortune’s, ahem, fortune, is that it was all achieved without a U.S. distributor in place. In fact, it was only on Feb. 13 — by which time the film had amassed 29 million internationally — that Lionsgate announced it had acquired the feature, setting a March 3 domestic release date.

When, at the Sundance Film Festival two years ago, Apple bought worldwide rights to Sian Heder’s Coda for a reported 25 million, it triggered panic across the independent film industry.
International distributors who had pre-bought the movie — Heder’s remake of 2014 French hit La Famille Bélier was a top seller for Pathé at Cannes’ Marché du Film a year earlier — thought the Apple deal might signal the end of their business model. Why bother taking the up-front risk by investing in movie scripts and talent packages — the core activity at most international film markets — if a deep-pocketed tech company can come in after the fact and buy up the movie when it is finished? In the wake of the Coda deal, there was talk of sales companies and Hollywood talent agencies wanting to insert mandatory buyback clauses into indie distribution contracts, treating independent buyers, from their perspective, as little more...

After a couple of lean years, Berlin is ready to feast.
Its European Film Market kicks off on Thursday, Feb. 16 with hundreds of finished films and scores of new packages and projects for every cinematic taste and budget. Even as sellers are still setting up their stands at the EFM’s Martin Gropius Bau headquarters, new packages continue to come thick and fast.
Black Bear International, which helped close a deal with Lionsgate (for domestic) and Amazon (for multiple international territories) for Guy Ritchie’s World War II actioner The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare on the eve of Berlin, added the buzzy musical project Fred & Ginger, about Hollywood dance legends Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, played by Jamie Bell and Margaret Qualley, to its EFM slate. Black Bear will handle international sales of the project, previously at Amazon, with UTA Independent Film Group and 30West co-repping the U.S.

Over a year ago, a trailer was released for director Jon Wright’s creature feature Unwelcome – and at the time, we were told the film would be receiving a theatrical release in March of 2022. Screen considers potential runners and riders.
The BBC is likely to announce its new head of film within the next two weeks, according to sources close to the process.
Scroll down for potential candidates and the original job spec

Dylan Leiner, Alison Thompson discussed the distribution, VOD and the future of cinema culture during a festival panel.
Dylan Leiner, Evp acquisitions and production at Sony Pictures Classics (Spc), and Alison Thompson, head of sales company Cornerstone Films, shared their experiences as industry heavyweights at Jerusalem Film Festival on Friday (July 8), with Philippa Kowarsky, head of sales company Cinephil, moderating.
The panel was titled ‘Commercial Distribution of Documentary Cinema’ but Leiner and Thompson used the forum to address wider challenges in the industry, including the changes wrought by VOD and the future of cinema culture and curation.
Thompson, who ran Focus Features International for eight years before launching Cornerstone, which helped take Asif Kapadia’s Amy [pictured] from initial sales pitch at Cannes 2013 to best documentary Oscar winner, agreed her industry was in the midst of painful reconfiguration. But she also expressed confidence that “the nadir” had been reached, and felt optimistic about what the next five years...
