Ahead of its 39th edition, Poland’s Warsaw Film Festival is betting on timely topics.
“The role of filmmakers, and artists in general, is to react,” says festival director Stefan Laudyn.
“For years, we have been showing films that criticize the situation in various countries, not just in Poland. We try to avoid puff pieces.”
While there is space for “lighter topics” as well, supporting Ukraine – and Ukrainian filmmakers – remains one of the priorities.
“We initiated the first solidarity action with Ukraine back in 2014, after the annexation of Crimea, we also supported Oleg Sentsov. Last year, we featured the entire Ukrainian competition from Odesa International Film Festival, which couldn’t take place due to the war.”
This year, eight Ukrainian productions and co-productions will be shown at the fest. Including “Diagnosis: Dissent” by Denys Tarasov, about punitive psychiatry used by the Kgb, and Taras Dron’s “The Glass House,” where...

As many as 19 films were competing for the awards of the 38th Golden Rose Film Festival in Varna, Bulgaria. The international jury has given its verdict, and the 2020 Golden Rose for Best Bulgarian Feature has gone to Ivaylo Hristov’s Fear, “for the skill to narrate ironically a story about daunting challenges”. Fear also earned Svetlana Yancheva the Best Actress Award: in the film, she plays a village school teacher who takes an African refugee under her wing, protecting him from the villagers’ xenophobia. The 38th Golden Rose showed an interesting trend in Bulgarian cinema: actors taking on directorial duties and making impressive features. Besides Ivaylo Hristov, who has been forging a strong directing career alongside his impressive acting filmography, actress Yana Titova won the Best First Feature Award for her independent film A Dose of Happiness, which explores the challenges of a young mother fighting a heroin addiction....
Bulgarian films shine at the country’s biggest gathering for domestic productions, which kicks off today. With so many festivals having been cancelled in Europe since March, Bulgarian films almost haven’t been introduced to the world at all this year, which means that the 38th edition of the Golden Rose Film Festival has been eagerly awaited by the Bulgarian film industry. Organised by the Bulgarian National Film Center in the seaside city of Varna, this edition (24 September-1 October) will screen pretty much everything that Bulgarian cinema has to offer this year, including minority co-productions. The edition kicks off tonight with the screening of Iranian director Siamak Etemadi’s Pari (Greece/France/Netherlands/Bulgaria/Switzerland), which was co-produced by Bulgarian production company Chouchkov Brothers. The 19 features competing for the Golden Rose Trophy are Viktor Chouchkov's 18% Grey (Bulgaria/Germany/Serbia/North Macedonia/Belgium), Yana Titova's A Dose of Happiness...
