After the massive critical and commercial success of “A Silent Voice” (2016), it seemed like director Naoko Yamada could do no wrong and was poised for huge things. It may have been strange for some then that her next directorial project would be tied to the “Sound! Euphonium” anime series, which Yamada had previously worked on as series unit director under Tatsuya Ishihara. It could almost be seen as a regression, as Yamada's first two features, “K-on! The Movie” (2011) and “Tamako Love Story” (2014), were also based on pre-existing anime series. Yet whether a fan of “Sound! Euphonium” or not, “Liz and the Blue Bird” (2018) is a constant delight and could well be Yamada's masterpiece.

Exclusive: There’s been much celebratory talk here at the Tokyo Film Festival about a new dawn of internationally-minded Japanese artists led by directors such as Hirokazu Kore-eda, Makoto Shinkai, and Ryusuke Hamaguchi.
One of the key creative voices often mentioned amongst this new Japanese set is Genki Kawamura, known internationally by audiences as the writer of If Cats Disappeared from the World, one of Japanese literature’s most successful contemporary novels, and the filmmaker who brought that book and titles such as Suzume, Weathering with You, and, most recently, Kore-eda’s Cannes prize-winning Monster to the big screen.
Born in Yokohama in 1979, Kawamura began his career at entertainment juggernaut Toho, where he was identified early as a promising talent. He cut his teeth on pics like Tetsuya Nakashima’s 2010 feature Confessions, which was shortlisted for the Best International Feature Oscar, and Mamoru Hosoda’s The Boy and the Beast.

Anime isn't a genre. It's a medium, one that's still fighting for mainstream acceptance in the West. Its hold on American audiences is stronger than ever, with Studio Ghibli blockbusters and franchises like "My Hero Academia" earning critical acclaim and global adoration. However, too many people still associate animation with children's viewing. While there are plenty of great anime films that parents can show to their kids, this attitude still leads to confusion. Not only is some anime emphatically not child-safe, but if you dismiss it as kids' stuff, you're missing out on some great movies.
If you've never watched an anime film before, rest assured that it's not all sailor uniforms and jiggly bits, just like how action movies aren't all gravelly-voiced men and sexy ladies. There's something for everyone, although we also confess that you're going to see a lot of Hayao Miyazaki and Mamoru Oshii here, and for good reasons.

Music is transportive to the extremes in Masaaki Yuasa's works. In his 2008 anime "Kaiba," there's a heartbreaking organ scene that inspires a bitter old woman to reminisce on long-lost affection. In "Ride Your Wave," a cheesy love song summons the spirit of a deceased loved one, fleetingly, like an incantation. Yuasa and Science Saru's latest feature cocktail "Inu-Oh," steeped in the 14th century Muromachi period of the ruling shoguns, rolls out rock music that unleashes the restorative power to unlock revelations to mysteries, gives restless ghosts peace through lyrical storytelling, and allow two misfits to assert their place in the world.

Japan’s anime powerhouse Kyoto Animation Studio, known for its compassionate storytelling and respectful treatment of its animators, was attacked by an arsonist on Thursday, with a fire breaking out at the company’s first studio building in Fushimi-ku, killing at least 33 workers and injuring more than 30 more.
The country was rocked by the shocking terrorist attack, as the death toll was the highest for an arson incident since 1989. Around 70 people were working when the fire broke out in the morning, which quickly spread throughout the three stories; a 41-year-old suspect was taken into custody and no motive was ascertained.
Kyoto Animation (KyoAni) was founded in 1981 by the husband-and-wife team of Hideaki and Yoko Hatta, who serve as president and vice president, respectively. KyoAni, which has a second studio facility located in Uji city, is acclaimed for its focus on anime TV series and movies about pre-teen and teen schoolgirl empowerment.

A melancholic and sentimental coming-of-ager that may be too slight for its target audience, the anime drama Liz and the Blue Bird (Rizu to Aoi tori) follows two music-playing besties as they prepare to part ways in their final year of high school.

The ripple effects of bullying come back to haunt a high school student years later — and over the course of two ambitiously overstuffed hours — in A Silent Voice (Koe no katachi), which was adapted from the popular manga series by Yoshitoki Oima.
Packed with drama, laughter, tears and at least two suicide attempts, this third animated feature from director Naoko Yamada (Tamako Love Story) does its best to condense a seven-volume series into one feature-length film, though it tends to suffer under the weight of so much material. Already a hit in Japan, where it grossed close to...

A Silent Voice
Naoko Yamada's A Silent Voice is the anime tale of a bully who regrets his treatment of a deaf girl and seeks to make amends years later, only to discover that it's not so easy. Earlier this year it enjoyed a successful run across the UK, but it was never made properly accessible to deaf and hard of hearing audiences. Now Showcase Cinemas are planning a series of screenings to let people like its heroine see how they've been represented.
The screenings, scheduled for 7pm next Tuesday evening (16th), will be fully subtitled so that audiences can see not only what's being said but what other sounds are being made. There will be explanations when musical cues in the film let us know about the heroine's emotional state, providing a much more comprehensive viewing experience.
The charity Action on Hearing Loss has long campaigned for cinemas to provide more accessible.

“Your Name” has already become an international blockbuster and “In this Corner of the World” has won the Japanese Academy Award for Best Animation, but it seems the industry had even more to offer in 2016, and “A Silent Voice” is a great testament to the fact. The movie is based on homonymous manga written and illustrated by Yoshitoki Oima.
“A Silent Voice” is screening at cinemas in Australia and New Zealand by Madman Entertainment
The story revolves around Shoya Ishida and starts when he is attending elementary school. Shoya is a sort of delinquent (as much as one can be during elementary years) but is quite popular in the classroom, sitting in the same desk with a girl, Naoka Ueno, and having two very loyal friends. However, things change completely when a new student arrives in school, Shoko Nishimiya. She is proven to be deaf and due to that has some speech impeachment.

Naoko Yamada’s animation about a young man seeking forgiveness from the victim of his childhood bullying, is a real tear jerker
Following on the heels of last year’s Japanese anime success Your Name comes another young adult-skewed release. And while it lacks the formal ambition of Your Name and its exquisite visual impact, A Silent Voice has an appealing lush, wallowing emotional embrace.
Adapted, slightly inelegantly, from a manga comic, A Silent Voice deals with hot-button topics of bullying and disability. A boy grows up to regret his cruelty as a child who bullied a deaf classmate. He seeks her out to make amends, but can their friendship survive the guilt and self-loathing accrued from the past? So many tears are shed, you might need to sponge yourself down afterwards, but there are some lovely moments. I was particularly struck by the evocative framing – the camera avoids eye contact,...

Based on a manga series, this delicately told story of wrongdoing, redemption and romance is subtle and sensuous
Naoko Yamada’s animation A Silent Voice is a lovely coming-of-age story, a tale of redemption and romance, based on a manga series by 27-year-old Yoshitoki Ōima. It’s enriched by a plangent musical score and moody ambient sound design. The original title is Koe No Katachi, translated in the opening and closing credits as “The Shape of Voice”, which comes mysteriously closer to the film’s meaning.
Miyu Irino voices Shoya, a nasty kid in primary school who bullies a hearing-impaired girl, Shoko, voiced by Saori Hayami. After he is finally caught and punished, Shoya is ostracised, an experience represented by crosses in front of everyone’s faces. Later, as a teenager in middle school, the penitent Shoya attempts to re-befriend Shoko and reconstruct his circle of friends from that time – all the kids who ignored,...

First things first, A Silent Voice is a spectacle you need to be emotionally ready for. Be prepared for this to move you in ways you did not except when taking your seat in the theatre. Last year Your Name was topping the Anime charts and this year we are provided with an equally compelling and accomplished animation from talented female director Naoko Yamada.
Based on the popular manga by Yoshitoki Oima, the film follows class bully Shoya Ishida who starts picking on the new girl Shoko Nishimiya simply because she is different. She cannot hear, uses a notebook and sign language to communicate and wears a hearing aid. Always trying her best to explain herself through either writing or signing, Nishimiya’s abnormalities certainly don’t work in her favour as we see her severely bullied physiologically and physically throughout elementary school. The worst thing of all,...

After the success of the dazzlingly Your Name last year, not to mention the copious amounts of buzz surrounding Studio Ghibli and their next steps it seems the western world is certainly becoming more accustomed to the phenomenal pieces of animation Japan are currently producing. Now we are lucky enough to witness director Naoko Yamada’s latest feature film; A Silent Voice in all its emotional glory.

These past few months have been pretty superior for Spider-Man. For those of you who aren't up speed, writer Dan Slott has placed the mind of Doctor Otto Octavius—a.k.a.
