Earlier this month we published a list of 20 cover songs that became more famous than the originals. From Whitney Houston's version of "I Will Always Love You" to Sinead O'Connor's breathy remake of Prince's "Nothing Compares 2U," the list scanned some of the best renditions in music history.
There's another realm of cover songs we didn't include in the last post, however, which is where our list of unexpected covers comes in. We've put together the strangest and most unpredictable song selections of artists like Johnny Cash, Tom Waits and Dusty Springfield. Scroll through the list below and let us know your thoughts on the world of reimagined tunes in the comments.
1. "Hurt" by Johnny Cash (original by Nine Inch Nails)
"Hurt" was written by industrial rock icon Trent Reznor for Nine Inch Nails' 1994 album, "The Downward Spiral." Eight years later, Johnny Cash covered the song and his...

We asked for fresh, modern music on Season 12 of American Idol, and executive producer Nigel Lythgoe has responded with…the Burt Bacharach/ Hal David Songbook!
[Insert Sound of Crickets Here]
Ah well, at least the second theme for Top 6 Week — during which the contestants will each cover two songs apiece — is “The Song I Wish I’d Written.” That should yield some recent, not-done-to-death, edgy and/or unexpected material, as long as there’s not some heinous fine print that turns it into ”The Song I Wish I’d Written (From the List of 11 Songs That Uncle Nigel Bothered to Clear).”

Big congrats to Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Justin Mikita, who announce their engagement in this video, as well as advocate for a more stylish & equal America.
This may be my new favorite video of Neil Patrick Harris. He's co-producing an interactive experience in L.A. called "Delusion: The Blood Rite," and tries to take a tour of the mansion they're using. He's just so adorable.

Los Angeles — Hal David, the stylish, heartfelt lyricist who teamed with Burt Bacharach on dozens of timeless songs for movies, television and a variety of recording artists in the 1960s and beyond, has died. He was 91.
David died of complications from a stroke Saturday morning at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, according to his wife Eunice David.
He had suffered a major stroke in March and was stricken again on Tuesday, she said.
"Even at the end, Hal always had a song in his head," Eunice David said. "He was always writing notes, or asking me to take a note down, so he wouldn't forget a lyric."
Bacharach and David were among the most successful teams in modern history, with top 40 hits including "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head," "(They Long to Be) Close to You" and "That's What Friends Are For." Although most associated with Dionne Warwick, their...

Everyone looks a little too good in this party film set in 1988 called, "Take Me Home Tonight" -- like the wardrobe was designed not around what people were wearing in 80's, but what people were wearing in films in the 80's. I've only seen the trailer though, so maybe there are some hideous paisley shirts and pleated jeans somewhere in this new creation by "That '70s Show" star, Topher Grace.
If you've been missing him ("Predators" doesn't count) here's your chance to get a little dose of Eric Forman. It seems as if we've found the same character, just at the end of the following decade, with the same dry humor.
The drugs have changed a bit, and rumor is that epic amounts of blow get inhaled. The music has all changed too, and some radical tracks from the decade get prime placement in this last "night of unbridled youth" blow out.

"Made in Dagenham" is based on the true story about working class women fighting for equal pay with "one foot in the kitchen, one foot on the factory floor" in 1960's England. One of those feel good equal rights flicks with lots of empowering dick jokes that I'd probably never go and see -- but it has a killer soundtrack.
Among the 17 tracks that inspire the working girls, lead by Sally Hawkins, to stick it to the man are oldies by James Brown, The Kinks, Small Faces, Dusty Springfield, The Troggs, and reggae genius Desmond Dekker. Not all of these appear to have made it into the film (comparing it to the press release from Sony Pictures reveals at least 6 tracks not in the film) and The Playlist points out that the album notes that it "features music from and inspired by the film." Well, whatever works. Have a listen...
