Her father was born in east L.A. and was an elementary school teacher, her mother was born in Mexico and was the director of a migrant farm camp in Davis, California. Her mother fought for the rights of migrants who worked in the fields alongside Ceasar Chavez. Eventually due to years of being around the pesticides her mother passed away from cancer. Her father later died of a heart attack.
