The Cannes Film Festival has unveiled the inaugural lineup for its Immersive Competition section, the first-ever selection of augmented and virtual reality works to screen at the austere French film fest.
The 8 competition titles and 6 out-of-competition screenings include works featuring such talents as Jessica Chastain, Colin Farrell, Millie Bobby Brown, and Tahar Rahim. The lineup highlights cutting-edge VR and Ar techniques and includes location-based virtual reality, mixed reality experiences, projection mapping, and holographic works.
Introducing the new immersive section, Cannes said it hoped to “spotlight the next generation of international artists who are redefining storytelling and inventing new narrative-driven experiences that move beyond the traditional two-dimensional cinema screen.” The section is being organized with support from the French national film board, the Cnc. The immersive works will be presented at an exhibition space in the Cannes Cineum complex on the outskirts of the city and at the campus of Cannes’s Georges Méliès film school.

Colin Farrell, whose eclectic acting career underscores a desire to venture off beaten paths, took time during lockdown to share with Variety his thoughts on stepping into virtual reality with “Gloomy Eyes,” a critically acclaimed series that world premiered at Sundance in 2019.
The three-part animated Vr series, which won prizes at the SXSW and Annecy festivals, is being launched Thursday across all Vr platforms, including Oculus Quest. Farrell narrated the poetic, visually-pleasing series, playing the role of a lonely zombie boy who falls in love with a young human girl. Their love transcends boundaries in a world where zombies are outlaws. “Gloomy Eyes” was directed by Jorge Tereso and Fernando Maldonado, the duo behind the animated short “Shave It.” It’s produced by Atlas V and 3dar, and co-produced by Arte, Ryot, Vive Originals and Oculus with the support of the Cnc, Sacd, the Procirep and the region Auvergne Rhone Alpes Cinema.

A record number of virtual reality productions from Taiwan will be featured at this year’s 76th Venice Film Festival, raising the hopes of the lackluster film industry in Taiwan, which has been quietly transforming itself into a next-generation content production hub through technological advancement.
While Taiwan’s tech giant Htc, which has been developing not only high-quality headsets under its Htc Vive unit and commissioning original Vr content production under Htc Vive Originals shingle, plays a major role in driving the trend, the growth of tech start-ups specializing in extended reality (Xr) — which includes Vr, augmented reality (Ar) and mixed reality (Mr) — are also eyeing on the potential in entertainment content.
Taiwan tops Asia in this year’s Venice Virtual Reality competition section, with seven entries. Three — “O,” “Only the Mountain Remains” and “The Making of” — are the fruits of the 5×1 initiative, a partnership focusing on Vr films between...

Running Aug. 29-Sept. 7, the third edition of Venice Vr will spotlight 39 unique projects, with 26 unspooling in the competition overseen by jury president Laurie Anderson and 13 more screening in the non-competitive Best of Vr section.
Once more, curators Michel Reilhac and Liz Rosenthal have divided the Venice Vr competition into two unique sections — one dedicated to 360° linear films and the other to more outwardly interactive projects.
Three of the 12 films competing in the linear category come from last year’s Grand Prize-winning studio, Atlas V.
The Paris-based production house, which took top honors with 2018’s “Spheres,” will bring a new installment of its popular series “BattleScar — Punk Was Invented by Girls.” The coming-of-age narrative is anchored by actress Rosario Dawson. It is also screening “Ex Anima Experience,” an equestrian show made in partnership with French circus artist Bartabas, and “Gloomy Eyes,” a Tim Burton-esque animated film from directors Jorge Tereso and Fernando Maldonado.
