Hollywood legend Nicolas Cage is at his gonzo, gurning, goofball best as an American man on a mission to Pakistan to single-handedly mount a war on terror, in the most outrageously hilarious culture clash comedy to hit the screen since Borat, and directed by the comedy genius behind that film, Larry Charles. It’s made all the more berserk and bizarre by the fact that it is a true story.
Synopsis:
Eccentric ex-convict Gary Faulkner has a vision from God, telling him he must single-handedly mount a war on terror. Faulkner, armed with a single samurai sword bought from a home shopping channel, travels from the Us to Pakistan to embark on his highly dangerous and foolhardy mission – where he runs into bemused locals, irate CIA men, and even America’s most wanted, Osama bin Laden himself.
Army of One is available to rent on VOD and Digital HD from 19th December.

This year, Nicolas Cage starred in films about ex-cons kidnapping a mobster’s birthday, an imbalanced civilian trying to hunt down Osama Bin Laden and a WWII Navy Captain struggling to stay alive in shark-infested waters. Suffice to say, he’s an actor who takes on varied roles, and this January, audiences will see him again as a ruthless mobster who faces off against John Cusack (“High Fidelity”) and Adrian Grenier (“Entourage”)

In the mid 2000s, ex-con and handyman Gary Faulkner traveled to Pakistan several times to hunt down Osama Bin Laden on a mission from God. The story was reported by GQ in 2010, and now six years later, Faulkner’s story has finally been adapted to film. Oscar-winning actor Nicolas Cage stars as Faulkner and the film follows his attempts to capture Bin Laden and his various conversations with God (played by Russell Brand). The film co-stars Wendi McLendon-Covey (“Bridesmaids”), Rainn Wilson (“The Office”), Paul Scheer (“Human Giant”), Denis O’Hare (“Michael Clayton”), Will Sasso (“MADtv”) and Matthew Modine (“Full Metal Jacket”). Watch an exclusive featurette from the film below featuring Cage discussing the film and Faulkner below.

As an exercise in the wrong way to formulate satire comes Larry Charles with his latest film, Army of One, a reenactment of media headliner Gary Faulkner, a Christian bumpkin who believed God told him he was chosen to fly to Pakistan and sniff out Osama Bin Laden because he would have the element of surprise the Us military lacked.

I don’t take 1-star reviews lightly, but Army Of One is borderline unwatchable. The story itself – while factually true – feels like an out-of-date Mad TV sketch (funny that Will Sasso co-stars), while Larry Charles directs a coked-up Muppet version of Nicolas Cage. We know the dire professional straights that Cage constantly navigates, but has Russell Brand really fallen so hard to play an angsty God who makes a “holy shit” pun upon his introduction? Charles’ brand of stupidity is never comical, nor is Cage’s zany portrayal of a real-life nutjob (with a sweet heart) ever endearing. Cage may be on a mission from God, but don’t you dare lump a classic like The Blues Brothers in with this tone-deaf mess of reality.

To hear about Gary Faulkner is to know the meaning of the phrase “stranger than fiction.” This is a Chatty Cathy of a Colorado handyman who was visited by God one afternoon while receiving dialysis and given a mission. Of everyone on planet Earth, Gary was the one personally selected by his Lord and Savior to capture Osama Bin Laden in Pakistan and bring him to the United States for “justice and stuff.” Not the Marines. Not mercenaries or Al-Qaeda power struggles. No, the man for the job was Gary Brooks Faulkner. He isn’t crazy—at least not clinically diagnosed despite others trying—or in it for the publicity. He’s merely a concerned American proud of his awesome country and willing to do what the Big Boys can’t.

Well before he starred in a series of low-rent Dtv thrillers and memes, Nicolas Cage, now smugly considered an icon of unintentional comedy by so many, used to make mainstream studio comedies pretty regularly. The early ’90s in particular saw a spate of innocuous Cage yukfests (Honeymoon In Vegas, Guarding Tess, Trapped In Paradise), and Army Of One is arguably his first broad comedy since those days, considering the darkness and anguish that run through the likes of Adaptation or The Weather Man. Even this return to outright wackiness finds Cage pretty far afield from his ’90s rom-coms, as he plays real-life crackpot Gary Faulkner, a Colorado man who in the years following 9/11 set off for Pakistan intending to accomplish what the U.S. government couldn’t: capture Osama Bin Laden.

A shockingly ill-advised caper from Borat director Larry Charles takes the left field true story of Gary Faulkner and mines it for zero laughs
In Army of One, a man who experiences hallucinations due to kidney disease has a vision of God, sparking an ill-advised misadventure. I urge the film’s director, the usually great Larry Charles, to immediately seek a doctor’s care, as I fear he may be suffering from a similar condition.

If you’ve come into contact with any of Larry Charles’ previous creative efforts – Borat, Brüno, and The Dictator to name but three – you’ll no doubt have a fair idea of what to expect going into the release of Army of One.
It stars Nicolas Cage as Gary Faulkner, a patriotic ex-con and unemployed handyman who’s described as a “modern-day Don Quixote.” That’s because, while down in the dumps, Cage’s bumbling protagonist receives a divine intervention from god himself (Russell Brand), who orders him to travel to the Middle East with a simple, borderline suicidal mission: execute Osama bin Laden.
Equipped with a measly sword purchased from a home shopping TV channel and little else, the results are frankly hilarious, and during his crusade, Faulkner actually made tracks to Pakistan 11 times in total. We know this because his ill-advised journey was documented in Chris Heath’s GQ article six years ago,...

Army of One is a movie starring Nicolas Cage as a man sent on a mission from God to hunt Osama Bin Laden. With a sword. That's really all you should need to know to get excited for Army of One, but if you do require a bit more info, how's this: it's a true story. A lot of movies try to play the "based on a true story" card only to be very loosely inspired by a vaguely similar event. Army of One, however, is very much so a true story. A man named Gary Faulkner really took to Pakistan, sword in hand, to hunt down the world's most notorious terrorist. He obviously wasn't successful, but at least his insane story gave Borat and Curb Your Enthusiasm director Larry Charles the material to turn it in to a movie. Army of One hits Digital HD on...

Scenario: someone walks into your office, slaps a picture of Nicolas Cage sporting a white beard on your desk and goes, “Picture this: he hunts down Osama Bin Laden. It’s a comedy.” Question: Do you greenlight it? If your answer is “yes,” someone has already beaten you to the punch. His name is Larry Charles — helmer of Borat and Bruno — and Army of One, which has just received its first trailer, follows that thread, adding in Russell Brand as God, who comes to Cage in a vision requesting the apprehension of terrorist Osama Bin Laden. Off goes Cage, an ex-con, on his quest to Pakistan carrying a sword and his most pure, unfiltered Cageist swagger.
The trailer suggests full-on farce, including Cage slicing apples with a sword, Brand speaking through different people as God, and even a tape of “Bin Laden” doing his own take on MTV’s Cribs.

Nicolas Cage is on a mission from God in the riotous, rather bizarre first trailer for Army of One.
Hailing from Borat and Religulous director Larry Charles, the upcoming satire fits right into Cage’s wheelhouse, and will have the actor portray a character that is quite simply larger-than-life. That character is Gary Faulkner, a low-life, clumsy ex-con attempting to make ends meet as an unemployed construction worker. But following a divine intervention from God above – played here by a wickedly charming Russell Brand – Faulkner plots course for Pakistan to take down Osama bin Laden equipped with a measly sword purchased from a home shopping TV channel.
Also starring Wendi McLendon-Covey, Paul Scheer and Rainn Wilson, if Army of One seems stranger than fiction, that’s because it is. Gary Faulkner became the centerpiece of Chris Heath’s GQ article six years ago after taking no less than 11 trips to...

Nicolas Cage’s diverse film career has led him down many paths, some have led him to winning an Oscar and playing a superhero, and others are little more off the beaten path, such as his latest performance in the new comedy “Army of One” as a man told by God to capture Osama bin Laden. Loosely based on a GQ story, the film follows ex-con and handyman Gary Faulkner as he learns from a vision of God (played by Russell Brand) that he must go to Pakistan and capture bin Laden. The film co-stars Wendi McLendon-Covey (“Bridesmaids”), Rainn Wilson (“The Office”), Ken Marino (“Party Down”), Denis O’Hare (“True Blood”) and Paul Scheer (“The League”). When I first wrote about Army of One last year, I was very intrigued by the concept. How could I not be? It's a movie directed by Larry Charles (Borat, The Dictator) and starring Nicolas Cage as a guy named Gary Faulkner, who receives a vision from God telling him to hunt down Osama bin Laden, so he goes to Pakistan to see if he can find him. Oh yeah — and it's based on a true story. I was intrigued, but now that I've seen the first trailer for the film (via EW), I'm completely hooked: this looks amazing.

The halls are starting to hum softly here in Berlin as the European Film Market swings into gear. The first deals were announced yesterday before the event officially opened, with The Weinstein Co notably boarding Im Global’s The Man Who Made It Snow. This morning, FilmNation unveiled a series of offshore output deals for titles from Open Road, which will kick off with the Jamie Foxx/Michelle Monaghan-starrer Sleepless Nights.
Though it’s not likely to be a frenzy, and with currency concerns in the market internationally, Berlin should see more action in the coming days. Distributors are looking for product for 2016 and beyond, and some memorable buys have emerged here in recent years. In 2014, The Weinstein Company made a record-setting $7M deal for The Imitation Game which has now made about $140M worldwide and has an armful of Oscar nominations to boot.

Nicolas Cage has been cast in Osama Bin Laden hunt comedy Army of One.
Borat director Larry Charles is adapting a GQ article about a Us citizen who decided to launch his own hunt for the terrorist, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Cage will play construction worked Gary Faulkner, who made several attempts to sneak into Pakistan and Afghanistan.
The semi-scripted film is expected to diverge from the original narrative.

Seth Rogen and James Franco forgot one thing when making The Interview: you won’t offend anyone if you go after a tyrant who’s already dead.
Okay, maybe that’s not entirely true, but the next team of people likely to stir international controversy over a silly comedy are Borat director Larry Charles and none other than Nicolas Cage in their new satire Army of One.
The Hollywood Reporter first had details on the new project Wednesday, in which Cage plays an ordinary guy from the States who takes it upon himself to hunt down and kill Osama bin Laden. The film is loosely based on a GQ article about Gary Faulkner, a 50-year-old man from Colorado who, according to the piece, “had been found high in the mountains of Pakistan near the Afghan border carrying a sword, a dagger, a pistol, and night-vision equipment” on a one-man quest to kill bin Laden.

The Weinstein Company announced that Nicolas Cage will star as an average guy who attempts to hunt down Osama Bin Laden in the upcoming "Army of One" comedy, to be directed by Larry Charles (Borat). The story is based on a GQ magazine article about a construction worker/ex-con Gary Faulkner, who attempted to sneak into Pakistan and Afghanistan multiple times armed with a sword in order to find Bin Laden. This obviously took place before Bin Laden was killed by Seal Team 6. The plan is to begin shooting in March and use the same techniques utilized in Charles' other films, like "Bruno" and "The Dictator." It will then hit theaters at the end of 2015.

Nicolas Cage has been cast in the comedy Army of One, the story of a man who attempted to capture Osama Bin Laden all by himself. The film will be directed Larry Charles (Borat) and is a semi-scripted, "loose retelling" of an article published in GQ. Cage will take on the lead role based on Gary Faulkner, a Colorado man who "picked up a pistol and a samurai sword to sneak across the Pakistan border to hunt down Osama Bin Laden." Principal photography is to begin in early 2015 and there are hopes for an end-of-year release. [The Wrap]...

Nicolas Cage gets a bit of a bum reputation these days as a bad actor. That's just simply not true. He has far too many great movies with truly unique performances for that to be the case. But, to be fair, he's popped up in quite a few duds in the recent years, many of which went straight to home video. So while his reputation may not be entirely accurate, it's at least understandable. Hopefully Army of One changes that. Directed by Larry Charles (Borat), this new satire is based loosely on the real life of Gary Faulkner, a construction worker from Colorado who quit his day job to travel to the other side of the world and hunt down Osama bin Laden. Obviously he didn't succeed, but he certainly got up to many shenanigans in the process. For example, his most...

Imagine if some random guy from Colorado just decided to travel to Pakistan and hunt Osama bin Laden himself? Now imagine if they made a movie about that guy and he was played by the always-entertaining (and forever-fascinating) Nicolas Cage. That's the setup for Army of One, which will star Cage in the leading role. Directed by Larry Charles (Borat), this satire is based loosely on the real life of Gary Faulkner, a construction worker from Colorado who quit his day job to travel to the...

Before you get too excited: no, Nicolas Cage won't be playing the infamous terrorist Osama Bin Laden in this movie - although that would admittedly be pretty amazing.
THR reports that Cage will star in a satirical comedy called Army of One for Borat director Larry Charles. And though this will be based on a true story, don't expect anything serious along the lines of American Sniper or Zero Dark Thirty.
Army of One is loosely based on Chris Heath's GQ magazine article recounting the real-life misadventures of Gary Faulkner, a Colorado construction worker who took it upon himself to find Bin Laden, including trying to sneak into Pakistan and Afghanistan numerous times.
Sounds a little like the Morgan Spurlock documentary Where in the World is Osama Bin Laden?, but hopefully Cage's...let's call it "unique" brand of acting will give this film a life of its own. Scott Rothman and Rajiv Joseph,...

It's not that strange to imagine Nic Cage taking out Osama bin Laden. Or at least wanting to. That's why he's been cast to play Gary Faulkner, reports Deadline, the subject of a fascinating GQ profile who, as a "50-year-old ex-con ... traveled to the most volatile region of Pakistan to capture Osama bin Laden." The film's called Army of One and will be directed by Larry Charles — the same guy who did Borat and so many episodes of Seinfeld — which means we're likely getting something funny. Or at least something that's funny on purpose.

There's been a lot of terrible Nicolas Cage movies made over the past few years, and last year brought one of the worst with the new adaptation of Left Behind. But it sounds there might be a good one in the works, and it's not just another action thriller. THR has word that Cage is slated to star in Army of One, a satirical comedy from Borat director Larry Charles about an average guy who decides to begin his own hut for Osama Bin Laden. And the film has some serious producer power behind it as Harvey and Bob Weinstein have struck a deal for the North American rights to the film through the TWC-Dimension banner. Read on! Borat director Larry Charles has tapped Nicolas Cage to lead his latest satire, Army of One, which will see the actor play an average Joe who attempts to hunt down Osama Bin Laden on his lonesome.
Loosely inspired on real events, Charles’ latest draws from the story of one Gary Faulkner, a blue-collar construction worker who took it upon himself to assassinate who many considered to be one of the most dangerous men in the world at the time. Such a journey saw Faulkner attempt to sneak into Afghanistan and Pakistan on multiple occasions, armed with only a sword to stop the al-Qaeda leader in his tracks before his ultimate demise at the hand of the Us army in May of 2011.
On paper, it’s a bonkers premise that could just work thanks to the touch of Charles. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Army of One will retain the semi-improvised...

And get this. Because existing material focusing on the world.s most notorious terrorist leader was a bit too somber, this one.s going to be a comedy! The crazy-eyed icon Nicolas Cage will team-up with legendary comedy writer and director, Larry Charles for a militaristic romp in the desert called Army of One, according to a studio release. The film will reportedly be based on an article in GQ Magazine by Chris Heath, which depicts the puzzling real life adventures of a Colorado construction worker named Gary Faulkner, who, in a series of quixotic whims, attempts on multiple occasions to sneak into Pakistan and Afghanistan to...

The hunt for Osama bin Laden was so significant that we’ve already had a few movies about missions to find and/or kill the al-Qaeda leader. Most famously, of course, is Zero Dark Thirty, which dramatizes the operation that resulted in bin Laden’s death. Before that was the comedic documentary Where in the World is Osama Bin Laden?, in which director Morgan Spurlock jokingly travels through Africa and the Middle East in search of the wanted terrorist. Spurlock wasn’t the only “regular guy” on the hunt, though, as we’ll see soon enough in the comedy Army of One. Described as a satire, the movie will also be based on a true story of the “Rocky Mountain Rambo,” Gary Faulkner, a Denver-based construction worker who in 2010 went to Pakistan armed with a pistol, a knife and a samurai sword to take out bin Laden all by himself. Who...

Nicolas Cage toplines as Faulkner in this semi-scripted project from Scott Rothman and Rajiv Joseph ("Draft Day"). When he’s not busy posing for potentially unpleasant selfies with random fans, Nic Cage is taking on film job after film job. For every one that wins him praise, though, such as Joe, there’s a Left Behind lurking around the corner to detonate his time in the kudos spotlight. Now he’s taking aim at something that should at least be funny on purpose, signing on for Army Of One.Borat director Larry Charles will forge the based-on-truth film about one Gary Faulkner, a flamboyant Colorado resident who in 2010 decided he was going to be the man to take down Osama Bin Laden, Rambo-style. Armed with a sword he bought from a home shopping network, a pair of night-vision goggles and his fervent belief that he was doing God’s work in tracking down and wiping out one of the most dangerous men on the planet.Obviously, we know he didn’t succeed,...

Wa wa wee wa! Nicolas Cage is starring in a comedy about Osama Bin Laden. For real.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the actor is joining forces with "Borat" director Larry Charles to film a satire about a regular joe who goes on the hunt for the terrorist leader. "Army of One" is based on a 2010 GQ article, which chronicled the attempts of construction worker Gary Faulkner to track down bin Laden.
"Army of One" is described as "semi-scripted," which likely means quite a bit of improv. That's clearly in Charles' wheelhouse, as he also directed "The Dictator," "Bruno," and "Religulous." As for Cage, his last film was "Left Behind" (literally). Maybe he'll have better luck with improv.

I am amazed how often I can do absolutely nothing of note all day and still feel tired in the afternoon. Like, it doesn't matter when I wake up, when I went to bed, what I did or what I've eaten, around 3 p.m. or so I just hit a wall where my body's like "Nap Time!!!" Caffeine doesn't help, sometimes it just makes it worse. Anyway, Misery Monday is half back tonight, so I'm sure there's plenty of you out there with your popcorn ready to watch some painful footage of addicts/people with Ocd work through their issues so you can feel better about your own lives. I think that's the point, is that the point? Those shows just make me horribly uncomfortable. At least with "Hoarders" I usually get inspired to do some cleaning or just throw shit out more often in general. Anyway, here's Monday night's TV:
