The Who are about to revive their 1969 rock opera Tommy on Broadway and frontman Pete Townshend joined the stage cast on The Tonight Show to perform several songs from the musical. The musician took the stage to showcase “Pinball Wizard,” “See Me, Feel Me,” and “Listening To You” alongside Tommy star Ali Louis Bourzgui. Pete Townshend has released a new song, “Can’t Outrun the Truth,” his first solo single in 29 years. The track was composed and produced by Rachel Fuller (Townshend’s wife and sometimes collaborator) under the name Charlie Pepper, and reflects on the lack of human interaction caused by the pandemic.
The song is accompanied by the Who guitarist’s first solo video in 40 years. The video was shot in a series of one-take performances by a creative team of Michael Nunn and William Trevitt.

The Monkees‘ Micky Dolenz said one of the Everly Brothers’ songs made him cry. Subsequently, the experience inspired his own live performances. Notably, the Everly Brothers song in question was considered obscene in the 1950s.

Just a couple of months before the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame unveils its Class of 2023, Courtney Love has accused the foundation of misogyny in an op-ed for The Guardian published Friday titled Why are women so marginalised by the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame?.
In the essay, Love cited writer Jessica Hopper, who recently calculated that only 8.48% of Rock Hall inductees are women: “When the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame started in 1983, you would have thought they might want to begin with Sister Rosetta, with those first chords that chimed the songbook we were now all singing from,” the Hole bandleader wrote. “The initial inductees were Chuck Berry, James Brown, Ray Charles, Little Richard, Sam Cooke, Fats Domino, the Everly Brothers, Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis Presley; not a woman in sight.”
Love went on: “It took the Rock Hall 30-plus years to induct Nina Simone and Carole King.

Fats Domino, the amiable rock 'n' roll pioneer whose steady, pounding piano and easy baritone helped change popular music while honoring the traditions of the Crescent City died Tuesday at the age of 89, the Jefferson Parish Coroner says.
The New Orleans musician's daughter said he died peacefully while surrounded by family and friends, CBS affiliate Wwl-tv reports.
In appearance, he was no Elvis Presley. He stood 5-feet-5 and weighed more than 200 pounds, with a wide, boyish smile and a haircut as flat as an album cover. But Domino sold more than 110 million records, with hits including "Blueberry Hill," ''Ain't It a Shame" and other standards of rock 'n' roll.

Close-Up is a column that spotlights films now playing on Mubi. John Carpenter's Christine (1983) is showing May 4 - June 3 and Starman (1984) is showing May 5 - June 4, 2017 in the United Kingdom.ChristineWas it too dark? Too bleak? Too gory? Did it have the misfortune of opening when American moviegoers were flocking to E.T.? Either way, when John Carpenter's The Thing landed in the summer of 1982, with an apocalyptic cliffhanger and the most surreally grotesque, tactile, gooey monster effects you never realized could be put on film, it fizzled. "It was hated," Carpenter later recalled at a screening in Los Angeles. "Hated by fans. I lost a job. People hated me. They thought I was this horrible, violent—" He trailed off and joked, "And I was." The audience laughed, because by now The Thing's exalted place in movie geek culture is secure: an exquisitely paranoid horror classic and arguably the crown...

A Complete Guide to Every Song Written By Paul McCartney and Elvis Costello During Their Partnership
Though his music can be heard in all corners of the globe, Paul McCartney’s songwriting process is impressively homegrown. When he teamed with Elvis Costello for sessions that would ultimately yield his 1989 album Flowers in the Dirt, the pair met at McCartney’s personal studio: a converted corn mill dubbed Hog Hill Mill, a short drive from his farm in rural southern England. Armed with nothing more high-tech than a pencil, paper and acoustic guitar, two of the world’s most influential composers climbed the steps to a small office tucked above the studio and pulled tunes out of thin air.

St. Charles County, Mo – One of rock and roll music’s last living pioneers, Chuck Berry, was found dead in his home in St. Charles County, Missouri, on Mar. 18, 2017. He was the “Father of Rock ‘n Roll” for his hit songs in the 1950s, but Berry was also known for his controversies and live concert style. He was 90 years old.
Berry, along with Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard and others in the 1950s, established the style of songs that influenced a generation of rock artists, including The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Bruce Springsteen and virtually any other guitar hero who had to learn Berry’s song “Johnny B. Goode” to get to the next level. His most productive period came in Chicago, when he recorded songs that he wrote for Chess Records on the near south side. John Lennon once said, “If you tried to give rock and roll another name,...

Sure, Minneapolis-based brothers Jack Torrey and Page Bunkum's vocals and Americana roots-rock tunes remind one of The Everly Brothers and/or Louvin Brothers, but their band The Cactus Blossoms still swings with a timeless vibe and carries that retro torch forward in a very convincing manner. Moreover, they opened for country legend Dwight Yoakam on Sunday night for Lincoln Center's Out of Doors Americanafest Weekend and the crowd was blown away. This infectious single -- "Stoplight Kisses" -- is from their excellent new album, You’re Dreaming, and was produced by the equally beguiling roots-rocker J.D. McPherson. One decade ago today, we first learned the story of American hero Ricky Bobby. Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby opened in theaters 10 years ago today. Audiences came out in droves that weekend for the comedy starring Will Ferrell as a winning-obsessed Nascar driver. Behind The Lego Movie, Talladega Nights remains Ferrell’s second largest movie opening. The movie reunited Ferrell with his Anchorman director Adam McKay. The two of them, along with John C. Other notable August 4 happenings in pop culture history: • 1942: Bing Crosby-Fred Astaire film Holiday Inn premiered in New York. Crosby song “White Christmas” is featured in the movie musical. • 1957: The Everly Brothers made their second appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show. Buzz and Woody and Slink and Hamm have been in our lives for two decades — Pixar’s “Toy Story” opened 20 years ago today, making animation history as it did. The first feature film from the studio and the first created completely using computer-generated imagery paved the way for movies like “Shrek,” “How to Train Your Dragon” and, of course, several more films from the acclaimed Pixar. Its 16th feature film, “The Good Dinosaur,” opens in theaters this Wednesday. A third sequel to “Toy Story” will come in 2018. The legacy of “Toy Story” is difficult to overstate: In addition to being a game-changer in the world CG animation, it raised the bar on family films that really appeal to audiences of all ages; Andy’s toys can be seen in Disneyland rides, real-world kids’ toy boxes and in countless Halloween costumes each year; and in 2005 the U.S. Library of Congress declared the movie culturally,...

Half of the brilliant duo that transformed 1950s pop music
With his older brother Don, Phil Everly, who has died of pulmonary disease aged 74, formed one of pop music's greatest vocal partnerships. If it was Elvis Presley who became the most spectacular icon of 1950s rock'n'roll, the Everly Brothers created a musical legacy which was every bit as influential. Their unique vocal harmonies, coupled with ingenious guitar arrangements and timeless material, had a revolutionary impact on the Beatles, the Hollies, Simon & Garfunkel, the Beach Boys, the Byrds and Crosby Stills & Nash.
The Everly Brothers' breakthrough hit was Bye Bye Love (1957), still regarded as one of their most impressive creations. Up to that point, Don and Phil had been chipping away at the country music scene in Nashville, Tennessee, with limited success. Bye Bye Love topped the country charts, but more significantly soared to No 2 on the pop charts, just...

Another song has emerged from the new (and unlikely) collaboration between Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong and jazz singer Norah Jones, who pay tribute to The Everly Brothers on their album "Foreverly" (out Nov. 25). Listen to "Silver Haired Daddy of Mine" below. Inspired by The Everly Brothers' 1958 album, "Songs Our Daddy Taught Us," the duo renders these traditional Americana songs with reverence and sincerity. On "Silver Haired Daddy of Mine," Armstrong and Jones harmonize over a honky tonk melody. They similarly duet on the previously released song, "Long Time Gone," for which a new lyric video was released today. Watch it here...

Record Store Day is our favorite unofficial holiday on HuffPost Culture because, a.) it gives us new music from across the spectrum all on one, glorious day, and b.) turns commercialism into a community-driven gesture. Nice, isn't? Last year, the day raised sales for record stores by 8 percent, while sales for vinyl overall grew 39 percent in 2011. The new vinyl out this year ranges from David Bowie and Paul McCartney to Katy Perry and Sigur Ros -- some have never-released before, some are recent live recordings and others are just good old vinyl versions of existing albums. We've compiled a Spotify playlist of some of our favorite releases to come out of Record Store Day, and also listed the records not on Spotify we're looking forward to getting our hands on. Take a spin below, and let us know what you're looking forward to buying in the comments.

Watch their duet here . And almost exactly one year ago, they performed “I’ll Never Find Another You” together on stage in Seattle. See the performance here . 1950s Radio in Color: The Lost Photographs of Deejay Tommy Edwards(Kent State University Press) is an extraordinary book on several levels. First there is the physical look of the book: it's an over-sized coffee table hardback that does full justice to the photos so beautifully reproduced therein. This brings us to the second point: the book is a priceless historical record of incredible candid photos taken by a man named Tommy Edwards. Who was he? Largely unknown today, Edwards was one of the top early deejays in the Cleveland Ohio market, where he helped make station Were-am a major force in popularizing the new music format known as rock 'n roll. Edwards had the foresight to photograph virtually every up-and-coming music star he was introduced to - and there were few who escaped his sphere of influence. Fate was unkind to Edwards and, due to a...

There have been plenty of creepy songs over the last thousand or so years. (Mozart‘s Requiem anybody? Well everybody, eventually.) We’ve decided to compile The 88 Creepiest Song Titles Of All Time. To be fair, we left out pretty much every death metal title because, frankly, they’re all pretty creepy. Click on the names of each artist to hear the selection. And feel free to weigh in on any song titles we may have left out in the comments. 88. “My Ding-a-Ling” Chuck Berry A no-brainer. It’s a song about a little boy discovering his penis, and it’s sung by a man well into his 40s. Perverted Justice’s favorite tune. 87. “Two Lovely Black Eyes” Charles Coborn What’s lovelier than a woman who was beaten in the face twice? According to Charles Coborn, nothing! 86. “With Her Head Tucked Underneath Her Arm” Stanley Holloway A song about Anne Boleyn,...

On what would have been his 75th birthday (Sept. 7), Buddy Holly received his Hollywood Walk of Fame star. The early rock legend was known for such hits as "That'll Be the Day," "Peggy Sue" and "Every Day." He was killed at the age of 22 in the infamous plane crash that also claimed the lives of Ritchie Valens and J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson.
There are now some pictures available of the ceremony, which we've included here. Among those attending the Walk of Fame induction included Holly's widow, Maria Elena Holly Santiago, Phil Everly of The Everly Brothers and actor Gary Busey, who was nominated for an Oscar in 1978 for his portrayal of Holly in "The Buddy Holly Story."
After the sidewalk ceremony, there was a concert held at the Music Box Theatre in Hollywood to honor Holly's music. Performers included Michelle Branch, Chris Isaak, Boz Skaggs and Paul Anka.

As the "American Idol" competition nears its conclusion, the four remaining singers said goodbye to Jacob Lusk.
In this week's performance, the wannabe "Idols" sang two songs. For his first song, Lusk sang Jordin Sparks and Chris Brown's parts in "No Air," which the judges didn't think was the best choice. Lusk redeemed himself a bit with his second choice, "Love Hurts" by The Everly Brothers/Roy Orbison. Watch the performance!

Wednesday night, the "American Idol" atmosphere was "electric" thanks to regal Oscar winners, Jacob Lusk crotch grabs and James Durbin's armpits. The producers had a fool-proof script banged out for our "enjoyment," which included the phrases "in it to win it," and "finding your perfect song." And the night's guest mentor told MSNBC back in 2007 that "['Idol'] undermines art in every way and promotes commercialism, I am sad people love it so."
In other words, this is "American Idol X: Abandon Hope All Ye Who Enter Here."
The theme was "Now & Then" which meant the contestants had two performances to rehearse. One was a current song (or in the case of Haley's to-be-released "Born This Way" deep cut, a future song) and round two was all about songs from the '60s. (Or, um, the '70s, if your name rhymes with Tames Surbin.)

Lydia and Laura Rogers grew up in Muscle Shoals, harmonizing in church and singing along to The Everly Brothers. With a background like that, a recording career almost seems inevitable, and the sisters’ self-titled debut seals that impression from the first notes of the lovely opener, “Tennessee Me,” a self-penned number that fits in nicely on an album dominated by covers of classic country (“Why Baby Why”), pop (“Something Stupid,” an oddity made famous by Frank and Nancy Sinatra), and folk music (“Do You Love An Apple”). The Secret Sisters—recorded on vintage equipment by Nashville veteran Dave Cobb, and ...
