Slowly but surely, the global TV market is shifting.
Whether it’s mainly due to the rise of streaming platforms, the rush for international imports brought on by a worldwide production shortage, or an audience finally taking advantage of a wealth of options, series in languages other than English are in the middle of a boom.
While some shows have certainly helped spur that influx of new fans (including ones that can be found below), the nature of the modern TV world is that there are precious few shows anymore that become can’t-miss phenomena. Netflix recently amended its weekly Top 10 report to include viewing totals in English and non-English categories, where (to the extent that those numbers are accurate and transparent) the top slots in the latter frequently outpace the former.

I have been tracking producer Sol Bondy since 2016 when co-production The Happiest Day in the Life of Ölli Mäki won the Un Certain Regard Grand Prize and the European Film Award for Best Debut. He and Fred Burle have been developing The Girl from Köln (aka Köln 75) with writer-director Ido Fluk, the filmmaker behind 2016 Tribeca selection The Ticket since 2019. "This project has been very close to our hearts in the last few years and we're very excited with the way it's been shaped so far," said Bondy, a Variety Producer to Watch in 2018. "It's been such a joy working with Ido on this exciting story and we're thrilled to have put an amazing team together," added Burle, Brazilian born producer who was just made a partner in One Two Films, alongside co-founders Sol Bondy and Christoph Lange. Burle joined One Two in January 2017, having graduated from the German Film and Television Academy (dffb) the previous year. He has previously worked as a film critic, at The Match Factory, and as curator of the inaugural dffb film festival. One Two Films has produced and co-produced award-winning films such as Holy Spider (Read my blog about it here), Vadim Perelman's Persian Lessons (Read my blog about it here), Jennifer Fox's Sundance breakout The Tale, Isabel Coixet's The Bookshop and Juho Kuosmanen's The Happiest Day in the Life of Olli Mäki.Other titles in the pipeline include Hafsteinn Gunnar Sigurdsson's dark comedy Northern Comfort, which premieres in SXSW later this month, Annemarie Jacir's survival drama The Oblivion Theory, Sarah Arnold's debut feature Wild Encounters and Michiel ten Horn's romantic comedy Any Other Night. In Berlin this year it was announced that Bankside would be The Girl from Köln's international sales agent and was launching sales. Alamode Film already has German-speaking territories and is a coproducer, who have very recently secured funding through the Fff, the local fund in Bavaria. It is in early pre-production and will shoot this year in Poland and Germany. The Girl from Köln tells the little-known story of Vera Brandes, who, in 1975, at the age of 17, staged the famous Köln Concert by jazz musician Keith Jarrett, which became the top-selling jazz solo album of all time. With Polish Film Institute backing, Oscar-winning Polish producer Ewa Puszczynska (Ida, Cold War) of Extreme Emotions is co-producing along with Annegret Weitkämper-Krug of Germany's Gretchenfilm (Seneca). Oscar nominee and Emmy winner Oren Moverman (Love & Mercy, Bad Education) serves as executive producer. Moverman also produced Fluk's previous feature, The Ticket. The Tale writer-director Jennifer Fox also serves as executive producer. Stephen Kelliher and Sophie Green executive produce for Bankside. It stars Mala Emde (Skin Deep, And Tomorrow the Entire World) in the lead role, alongside John Magaro (Past Lives) as Jarrett. Magaro was also in Cannes last year with Kelly Reichardt's competition title Showing Up.Other cast attached include Alexander Scheer (Rabiye Kurnaz vs. George W. Bush), Ulrich Tukur (The Life of Others), Susanne Wolff (Sisi & I, Styx), Jördis Triebel (Dark), Jan Bülow (Lindenberg) and Marie-Lou Sellem (Tar, Exit Marrakesh). The NYU-graduate Fluk was dubbed "a talent to watch" by Variety following his feature debut Never Too Late, the first crowd-sourced Israeli film ever made. His American debut, the Tribeca competition selection, The Ticket, starred Dan Stevens and Malin Akerman. Upcoming projects include 24 Hours in June, a retelling of the final day in the life of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg who were convicted of spying on behalf of the Soviet Union, to be produced by Academy Award winner James Schamus (Brokeback Mountain) and Joe Pirro (Driveways). Fluk is repped by Amotz Zakai, Amy Schiffman, and Kegan Schell at Echo Lake Entertainment. He is also created the recently-announced HBO series Empty Mansions for Fremantle with director Joe Wright (Atonement, Darkest Hour) attached to direct the pilot. "From the moment I heard Vera's story, about how as a high school teenager she organized one of the greatest concerts in history, I knew her story had to be told," said Fluk. "We were immediately exhilarated by Vera Brandes' remarkable female empowerment story. Her strength, courage and sheer belief in herself and the music of Keith Jarrett will entertain and inspire audiences around the world," added Kelliher.

Netherlands-based sales agent Dfw International has added Nienke Römer’s comedy “Candy & Bonita” and war drama “Betrayal” by Thomas Nauw and Dennis Bots to its lineup ahead of this week’s American Film Market.

The endeavor helps the pair find their place in the world again, but also drags everyone in their orbit into an unforgettable adventure. The film also stars Dutch porn actor and model Bobbi Eden.
The pic is currently in post-production and set for a domestic release in January 2023.

It’s long been likely — and in the past year closer to an almost certainty — that Netflix’s true TV strength lies in its international series. Aside from the rare organic word-of-mouth runaway sensation, these shows rarely get the publicity or attention that their star-studded, algorithm-optimized counterparts enjoy. For other streaming services with a similar wealth in their libraries, those international series also tend to be afterthoughts.
Yet, with fall upon us and the annual search for stories that pair well with chillier nights and decor the color of dying leaves, it’s also a perfect time to sample the global TV just right for the season. Particularly when it comes to horror series, these shows have a knack for combining the universal and the specific. They tap into what unsettles us, digging into our subconscious from painfully particular perspectives.

The film was produced under the Netherlands Film Fund’s Oversteek system, a collaboration between broadcasters, the Netherlands Film Fund and the Dutch Cultural Media Fund aimed at supporting new talent.

The latest project from the team behind The Deflowering Of Eva Van End, Michiel ten Horn's How To Avoid Everything (Aanmodderfakker) has swept a handful of Dutch film awards including Golden Calves for Best Film, Best Script and Best Actor and with an English subtitled trailer now available it's not hard at all to see why.How To Avoid Everything features the thirty-two-year-old waster and eternal student Thijs, who leads a slovenly, relaxed life full of beer, chicks and the occasional shift at a tedious media megastore. When Thijs visits his sister's house to do some washing, instead of his usual encounter with her semi-perfect family, he meets Lisa, the baby-sitter: a mature sixteen-year-old with exorbitant ambitions. Without intending to, Lisa has a profound effect on...

This year, one film was the surprise grand winner at the Dutch Film Festival where the Golden Calves are awarded, which basically are the Dutch Oscars. Michiel ten Horn's Aanmodderfakker won Best Film and Best Script, and its lead Gijs Naber won Best Actor. A few months later it arrived in Dutch cinemas, and last week I finally got to see for myself what all the commotion was about. Thankfully, once again my general misgivings with Dutch cinema were notable for their absence when I saw this film, as writer/director Michiel ten Horn has consistently outsmarted most of the pitfalls which our national filmmaking industry so often falls victim too. Time for a review! The Plot: Thijs is what the Dutch call "an eternal student"....

A cartooned Robin Wright is how I started Day 3 with the early morning screening of The Congress, Ari Folman ambitious Directors’ Fortnight opening film that features Jon Hamm, Paul Giamatti, Harvey Keitel and Danny Huston in either live performance or animated rotoscope/kaleidoscope fantasy incarnations. Touching upon themes of ageism and futurism, this is a meaty sci-fi dessert is tonally awkward, but ambitious in scope.
My first taste of Variety’s 2013′s Ten Euro Directors to Watch technically commenced at last year’s Tiff with Gabriela Pichler’s Eat Sleep Die, but today I got to view one more film that made waves in Toronto last September and continues to play well for auds in Michiel ten Horn’s The Deflowering of Eva van End. Quirky characters, meticulous framing, and a devotion to finely detailed art design all coupled to an underlying sincerity that (hopefully) keeps it all from becoming unbearably self referential. It's the formula that has served Wes Anderson well throughout his career and all of those characteristics look to be abundantly present in Michiel ten Horn's The Deflowering Of Eva van End.The Deflowering Of Eva Van End is a tragicomedy about the Van End family who, after the arrival of an impossibly perfect German exchange student, can no longer imagine how they ever managed to live with their imperfect selves.Evert (48), Etty (46), Erwin (20), Manuel (16) and Eva (15) are a perfectly normal family, who over the years have developed a slightly dysfunctional way of relating...

Film Movement has acquired "The Deflowering of Eva Van End," the debut feature from Dutch director Michiel ten Horn. The film, which had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, will receive a New York theatrical and VOD release in the second quarter of 2013, with a limited release roll-out to follow. It is currently still making stops on the festival circuit. While drawing comparisons to the darkly comedic tone of Todd Solondz's "Welcome to the Dollhouse," ten Horn's "absurdist satire" tells the story of a dysfunctional family that is forced to come to terms with its strange fixations during a two-week visit by a foreign exchange student. “This is hands down one of the funniest films we have seen in a long time, and ten Horn manages the highly desirable, but seldom achieved, goal of making the audience care about his characters while laughing both with them and at them.

How many sitcoms have we watched where the only girl gets the brunt of any family angst? Family Guy notoriously takes this trope to an extreme, and now Michiel ten Horn's first feature seems to do the same thing. With a heavy American indie feel, this looks like it's going to be an emotional rollercoaster - for the star anyways. Deflowering premiers at Tiff. [Continued ...]...

After a string of announcements, it looks like the Toronto International Film Festival have locked down their line-up and it’s looking like a fantastic slate. Much of the additions today come in the form of previous Cannes premieres, including Michael Haneke‘s Amour (review), Cristian Mungiu‘s Beyond the Hills (review), Abbas Kiarostami‘s Like Someone in Love (review), Bernardo Bertolucci‘s Me and You (review), Hong Sang-soo‘s In Another Country and the Venice premiere Olivier Assayas‘ Something in the Air. Most notably missing is Leos Carax‘s Holy Motors, but we do get a new Michael Winterbottom film titled Everyday. Out of the Discovery section, the biggest film seems to be The Brass Teapot, and indie drama starring Juno Temple and Michael Angarano and one can check out all the additions below.
