Starz
Last week’s pilot episode of the Starz pirate drama Black Sails left a lot to be desired (read the review here), but the second episode was marginally better and looked ahead to some promising points in the series as a whole. There are a good amount of characters vying for attention here, most of whom didn’t rise above the level of a cardboard cutout in the pilot. Things change, though, and an upward trend could mean great things for Black Sails. Spoilers follow for the second episode “II.”
Among the few points of interest from last week’s episode was Billy’s quick decision to lie about the contents of the page he held in his hands – he deemed it the page missing from the ledger attained by the crew at the start of the episode, the page containing the schedule for a Spanish galleon carrying a vast fortune in treasure.

Starz
Starz hasn’t really ever been a major player in the TV game, with Spartacus being the only real success the channel has ever had. They only started offering original programming in 2005, though, and so new shows like the pirate drama Black Sails can still be considered among the channel’s early forays into the medium. Executive produced by Michael Bay – which the posters and trailers make sure to highlight – Black Sails serves as a prequel of sorts to Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic Treasure Island. Spoilers follow for the pilot episode of the series, entitled simply “I.”, which aired in the Us on Saturday night.
Set in and around the pirate port of Nassau on New Providence Island in 1715, the first episode of Black Sails introduces a host of profligate thieves and pirate mongrels: Captain Flint (Toby Stephens) leads a crew that includes the likable quartermaster Gates (Mark Ryan...

Review Jennifer Cates 16 May 2013 - 10:53
Jennifer says this noir-flavoured episode of Warehouse 13 is great fun...
This review contains spoilers.
4.13: The Big Snag
A really enjoyable episode where we see Pete and Myka doing a campy, but surprisingly charming Casa Blanca, and the rest of the team touching on Artie’s guilt and seeming desire to end his life dramatically. We’ve also got some Galaxy Quest cameos here with the appearance of Missi Pyle and Enrico Colantoni, and the effect is a great one. They play at turns a convincing and hilarious version of two star crossed lovers, sort of, trying to make it in a hard boiled world. Missi Pyle in particular is a wonderful addition to the episode, and her rendition of “After You’ve Gone” is a special touch in an already stellar show.
If there was one criticism I would have to make,...
