This week’s surprise news of conservative politician Rachida Dati becoming France’s new Culture Minister provoked an earthquake within the country’s predominantly left-leaning film and TV industry.
Dati was appointed on Jan. 11 to succeed Rima Abdul Malak as Culture Minister as part of a reshuffle of France’s President Emmanuel Macron, which also saw 34-year-old Gabriel Attal becoming Prime Minister.
A combative straight shooter with an acerbic of humor and a definite sense of style, Dati is currently mayor of the posh 7th arrondissement where she regularly mingles with stars residing in the neighborhood. But her appointment as Culture Minister was welcomed with vitriolic headlines across the media and was called out by a large chunk of the film and TV biz as a casting error. The high profile politician is seen as a potential threat to the industry’s unique model of “cultural exception,” where independent, diverse filmmaking is nurtured through subsidies,...

The fundamental thing about documentary filmmaking is telling a story in a manner that is exciting enough to grab the attention of the audience. Otherwise, why would you watch something about which you can find basically everything on the internet itself? Apple TV’s latest documentary series about former Nissan and Renault CEO Carlos Ghosn, titled Wanted: The Escape of Carlos Ghosn, follows this fundamental thing to a tee. As a result, watching the four-episode docuseries feels like watching a big-budget Hollywood thriller. The story itself is something that any filmmaker would grab to make cinema out of it. Someone like Michael Mann or Ben Affleck would do proper justice to it, for sure.
The documentary series is helmed by James Jones, who also happens to be a big deal. The BAFTA-winning documentary filmmaker has done many great works in the past that have covered grave international matters like the...

TV production may be mostly paused with Hollywood’s top talent on strike, but any lull in new programming hasn’t caught up yet. August brings with it more than a plentiful offering of new TV shows, from international dramas and reality to gripping docuseries and expansions of the “Star Wars” and “Adventure Time” universes. Netflix and A&e will debut two different yet complementary specials about hip hop, one focusing on its female influences and the other on items integral to music history. Apple dials into the engrossing world of automotive CEO Carlos Ghosn, while HBO takes a deep dive on the American telemarketing industry. On the feel-good front, Netflix reality boasts both the New Zealand dating series “Down For Love” and the return of “Nailed It” with an all-time baking challenge.

The story of the last months of Saddam Hussein’s life is to be told via a feature film from Fremantle and Sinestra.
The Prisoner in His Palace is one of the first projects to emerge from the first-look deal between Fremantle and Sinestra, the latter of which was launched late last year by Chernobyl director Johan Renck and Netflix’s upcoming Spaceman producer Michael Parets.

Damian Lewis has exited Showtime’s Billions.

After years of staying just one step ahead of the law and a big loss, Axelrod also saw nearly all his considerable fortune gone as he settled down to a handcuffs-free life in Europe.

Australian-Lebanese journalist and filmmaker Daizy Gedeon is en route to Cannes where she will receive a prize Monday night at the Better World Fund gala. Her latest film, “Enough — Lebanon’s Darkest Hour,” is an expose of how the country has fallen into chaos.
The darkest hour that she refers to is neither the 2020 port explosion, nor the bizarre flight of fugitive auto industry executive Carlos Ghosn. Rather it is the country’s descent over the past several years into a state of turmoil caused by the state’s capture by selfish elites.
“Before the explosion, the country was already cowering under the weight of decades of civil conflict, unrelenting regional turmoil but mostly from endemic, systemic corruption and pure greed,” says Gedeon. “Lebanon has become an allegory for kleptocratic regimes that have seen a resurgence across the globe, and their catastrophic impact.”
Gedeon has been based in Australia since 1987 and manages media company Gdr.

This time out, Cousins turns his lens to looking at the world’s complexities, contradictions and beauty in the context of people’s long confinements at home and constant assault from images. Cousins will also appear in conversation at the event.
In a first for Doc/Fest, the event will also screen its opening night (June 4) and closing (June 12) simultaneously in cinemas around the UK. At present, venues are set to re-open...

Exclusive: The elaborate escape of former Nissan boss Carlos Ghosn as he awaited trial on charges of financial misconduct in Japan made international headlines earlier this year. Now the alleged architect of that escape, private security operative Michael Taylor, is the subject of a feature-length film and television series, developed in tandem by Sam Rockwell, writer Davey Holmes, Vanity Fair Studios and MGM/UA TV where the Rockwell’s production banner Play Hooky has a first-look deal.
Rockwell is attached to star as Taylor in the feature film, which will tell the story of Ghosn’s harrowing escape. He will also executive produce the feature and the TV series, along with his Play Hooky producing partner Mark Berger. Rockwell will not star in the series, which will focus on a younger Taylor and how he got involved in private security jobs after he left the military.

After churning out several successful Arabic originals, Dubai-based Mbc Studios is entering the international TV dramas arena with a high-end English-language doc and series about Carlos Ghosn, the French-Lebanese-Brazilian former CEO of automakers Nissan and Renault, who jumped bail and absconded to Beirut while on trial in Japan for alleged financial misconduct.
“It’s not very often that one of the world’s top CEOs finds himself sent to jail and then, more importantly, managed to escape the way he did,” Mbc CEO Marc Antoine d’Halluin tells Variety.
D’Halluin says Mbc won over other suitors and obtained exclusive access to Ghosn and his wife, Carole, and other people in Japan, France and the U.S. who play key roles in the top manager’s saga. Ghosn, who is in Beirut – which he reached on a private jet in January – claims he was being prosecuted in Tokyo on trumped...

‘Succession’: Brian Cox On His Logan Roy “Alter Ego” As HBO Drama Set To Shoot Third Season In April
Brian Cox opened up about playing his “alter ego” Logan Roy in HBO drama Succession at a glitzy event hosted by European broadcaster Sky.
Cox, alongside Succession creator Jesse Armstrong, discussed his process for playing the ruthless media mogul and patriarch and told a story about attending a Ronan Farrow-hosted #metoo event.
“This guy I’ve been playing has now become my alter ego,” he said at the event at the Tate Modern art gallery. “I just use the bastard side of my personality. The irony is that I’m now saying what I think, which I never used to do. I tell people to fuck off. There was this incident that happened to me when I was in La [with] Rosanna Arquette. It was a #metoo evening with Ronan Farrow. It was a very serious evening and afterwards I was suddenly surrounded by a coterie of women and one or two of them,...

Chris Paine's new documentary sees a return to old territory but with a new, positive tale to tell. John Patterson salutes a rarity
Back in 2006, a riveting documentary asked and answered the explosive question in its title, Who Killed The Electric Car? The short answer was General Motors, the manufacturer of the first, limited-availability, lease-only electric car: the EV1. The longer answer would include the oil companies that stood to lose over time the greatest resource-monopoly in history; the deadwood managers at Detroit's Big Three, whose inability to think forward even in the medium-term left American suburbs and freeways choked with Escalades and Hummers that chugged gasoline to the tune of 10 miles to the gallon; and a consumer mindset that wasn't yet ready for the idea. The movie ended with the recall by Gm of all the vehicles, whose leasees had come to love them. All the cars were crushed.

Filmmaker and green transport guru Chris Paine.s second feature-length documentary, Revenge Of The Electric Car is a follow-up to his first, Who Killed The Electric Car? from five years ago. The first was a look at the Ev-1, a battery-powered car that General Motors designed, built, and test-marketed. After conspiring with the big oil companies, Gm reclaimed the entire fleet and had the cars destroyed. Paine presented this as one of America.s most outrageous conspiracy theories, right up there with the fake moon landing and the Grassy Knoll, a case of environmental innovation squelched by greedy oil profits. Paine peppered the film with testimonials from celebrity owners such as Ed Begley Jr, Mel Gibson, and Tom Hanks because either acting in movies makes them experts in technology or because they can afford the pensive cars. Paine actually staged a funeral for the Ev-1 but, since his was an agenda-driven doc,...

Chris Paine's documentary, Who Killed the Electric Car? excoriated Us car makers – but they'll probably like his new film
It's safe to say that film maker Chris Paine was the scourge of General Motors not so long ago.
His 2006 documentary, Who Killed the Electric Car? accused the auto industry and oil companies of ganging up to destroy the first generation of mass-produced plug-in vehicles – Gm's EV1. After losing $1bn on an electric car leasing scheme, the company repossessed all 5,000 of the cars, sending them to the crusher.
Five years later, however, there are more than 15,000 electric cars on American roads and the plug-in Chevy Volt is the engine behind Gm's recovery.
Paine documents the return from the dead of the plug-in in a new film, Revenge of the Electric Car.
Paine said in a telephone interview:
"It's very gratifying to see the industry turn around. Obviously we don't have...

Back in 2006, it was hard not to watch the final credits of Chris Paine’s “Who Killed the Electric Car?” without some kind of wordless anger. As that film detailed, General Motors — having been forced by new California emissions standards into creating an electric car — came up with the EV1, a model that delighted those who leased it (it was not available for sale, just lease) and seemed to indicate that the future had arrived. But the death of that regulation turned into the death of the EV1 — which, since it was not owned, was easily wrenched from the grip of its owners and summarily crushed out of existence. It was a...

Five years after Chris Paine's documentary Who Killed the Electric Car? hit screens, the director is back with another behind-the-scenes look at the car industry: Revenge of the Electric Car. This character-driven film showcases three of the major players touting the electric car renaissance: Bob Lutz of Gm, Carlos Ghosn of Nissan/Renault, and Elon Musk of Tesla Motors, a Silicon Valley-based startup. (Another colorful character, an electric car DIYer by the name of Greg 'Gadget' Abbott, also figures in the film.) Over three years, Paine chronicles the ups and downs of these entrepreneurs who struggle - both inside and outside the carmaker system - to bring this new technology to the masses. Revenge of the Electric Car is making its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival. Tribeca: What inspired you to develop a follow-up to your other film? Chris Paine: I didn't think it...
