Washington State’s Republican Party approved a resolution calling for the repeal of the 17th Amendment to the United States Constitution, which allowed for the direct election of U.S. Senators.
The Amendment was ratified on April 8, 1913. It overrode the Constitution’s provision allowing state legislatures to pick U.S. senators.
The resolution approved at the Washington State GOP convention states that “the Founding Fathers came to a great compromise at the Constitutional Convention of 1787 and provided for proportional representation of the people in the House of Representatives of the United States and equal representation for each independent state in the Senate of the United States.”
The document noted that “the selection of the United States Senators by the state legislatures was the political mechanism against congressional encroachment into the sovereignty of the states.”

James Madison defeated DeWitt Clinton in 1812 to secure a second term in the White House. To commemorate his inauguration, a craftsman from Paris made him a crystal flute. The flute eventually made its way into the possession of the Library of Congress and sat unplayed until this week, when Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden invited Lizzo, a classically trained flautist, to blow a few notes and even take the piece of history onstage during her concert in Washington, D.C.

If you saw Lizzo do her concert in Washington D.C., the other night, then you were witness to an incredible and peculiar moment in U.S. history. The super popular R&b singer, who is also known to be a flute protégé, collaborated with the Library of Congress to play an over 200-year old crystal flute first gifted to James Madison.
Madison received the flute as a gift from Claude Laurent in the year 1813, and no one involved in this process could’ve guessed that it would be played for the first time at a Lizzo concert in 2022.
Footage from the concert shows the artist taking the flute from Library of Congress staff who were onstage.
Fans laughed as Lizzo held the historical artifact super gingerly walking back to her microphone. “B––tch, I’m scared,” Lizzo said at center stage. “It’s crystal, it’s like playing out of a wine glass!

Lizzo kicked it seriously old school on Tuesday night (Sept. 27) during her gig at the Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. Like, for real old, as in the 1800s. The rapper had a very special guest for the gig: a crystal flute once owned, but never played, by Founding Father and fourth president of the United States, James Madison.
Surely you have questions. Earlier this week, the Library of Congress tweeted out a humble brag about having the largest flute collection in the world, with more than 1,800 pieces, including Madison’s 1813 crystal flute. “@lizzo we would love for you to come see it and even play a couple when you are in DC next week,” they wrote. “Like your song they are ‘Good as Hell.’”

But could James Madison twerk like that? While performing in Washington, D.C. Tuesday night, Lizzo was handed the prized crystal flute of the Founding Father and was allowed to play a few notes during her live show at the Capitol One Arena. The “heirloom” had never been played before — until Lizzo.
“I’m the first & only person to play this presidential crystal flute its literally an heirloom— like… as a flute player this is iconic and I will never be over it,” Lizzo wrote on Instagram sharing a video of the moment.

Lizzo has “made history” after she was given a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to play former US president James Madison’s 200-year-old flute on stage during her Washington DC concert.
The Emmy and Grammy-winning singer, who is currently on tour promoting her newest album, Special, posted a video of the historical moment on Twitter.
In the caption, she wrote: “Y’all, I played the 200-year-old crystal flute from the Library of Congress on Stage in DC.”
Midway through her Tuesday (27 September) performance, Lizzo can be seen making her way toward the side of the stage, where she’s handed a flute.
After carrying it gingerly to centre stage, she joked: “It’s crystal. It’s like playing out of a wine glass, bitch, so be patient.”
The 34-year-old classically trained flautist played a riff for the audience before she walked it back to the side of the stage in shock.

Hamilton is having a moment. Again. After being the toast of Broadway and pop culture five years ago, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s tour de force musical is back in the spotlight and in a different context. When it premiered at the Public Theater and then on Broadway in 2015, Hamilton was heralded as a masterpiece that broke into the mainstream with its infinitely catchy and layered original soundtrack, which fused rap and hip hop rhythms with traditional Broadway melody, jazz, and other American influences. And with its color-blind and diverse casting, it also reframed the American experiment’s founding for all Americans. At the time, it was embraced as the definitive work of art of the Obama years, with Michelle Obama herself calling it the best art “I have ever seen in my life.”
