Let Us Prey is a film released in 2014 staring Liam Cunningham, Pollyanna McIntosh and was directed by Brian O’ Malley.
McIntosh plays PC. Rachel Heggie, who is a cop starting a new job at an out of the way Scottish police station. Upon Heggie’s arrival at the station, it looks like it’s going to be a boring shift. However, things begin to get weird as the jail fills up with an assortment of ne’er do wells who have much more beneath the surface than the crimes that landed them in their cells. This sets the stage for the arrival of a mysterious stranger - thought to have been involved in a motor vehicle accident earlier in the film - who stirs the pot and boils up mayhem for everyone involved.

Ike and his young son run the Ike's Last Chance Gas station that sits way off of exit 33. But Ike isn't your typical gas station attendant because he has two very dark secrets. The first is why his jerky is the best around, and the second is that he accidentally killed his wife in a freak hunting accident and now her ghost is hanging around the station.
Out of all of the things Ike misses about his beloved wife, he misses the love she had for him in her eyes, and so Ike spends his time capturing helpless females to try and find those same loving eyes he remembers.
Oh, and he also turns them into jerky.
The only reason anyone is going to want to see Exit 33 is because Ike is played by horror legend, Kane Hodder, who if you don't know, was...

Alyce and her best friend Carroll go out for a night of fun when Carroll finds out that her boyfriend is cheating on her. Devastated, the girls begin drinking heavily when Carroll decides she needs something stronger to help ease her pain so they go to a drug dealer that Carroll frequents to score some ecstasy. Once back at Alyce's building, the girls head up to the roof, where Alyce (trying to scare Carroll) ends up pushing off.
Riddled with guilt, and plagued by haunting visions of Carroll, Alyce goes back to the dealer to get something to help her cope. As her life comes crashing down around her, Alyce goes deeper into the dark world of drugs, sex and eventually murder as she loses her grip on reality.

Every now and then, a low-budget horror film comes along and proves itself to be a game changer. After sitting through The Green Monster, I think it's safe to say that this isn't that film. However, to be fair, I don't think it's meant to be.
Directed by Bryan Roberts and Nolan Ball, The Green Monster is about the husband and wife team of Gerald and Molly who run a convenience store that not only sells beer and cigs, but also serves wish burgers made with special meat (hint, they're people) and items crafted with black magic.
It's not uncommon for movies to borrow from other movies, and The Green Monster is no exception, borrowing heavily from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Motel Hell and Pet Sematery.
According to the film's website the movie is supposed to be campy, and it is. It's got everything you...

One of my favorite scenes from The Silence of the Lambs is when Catherine captures Buffalo Bill's dog, Precious, in the hopes of negotiating a release. During the confrontation, Catherine says, “Don't make me hurt your dog!” to which Buffalo Bill replies, “You don't know what pain is!”
I bring this up because I know what pain is – it's sitting through the endurance test called Hillside Cannibals, or as I like to call it, The Hills Have Cannibals.
I call it that because this film claims to be based on the legend of, Sawney Bean, a man who lived in 15th or 16th century Scotland and was purported to be the head of a clan who lived in a cave and practiced cannibalism. It is this legend that Wes Craven supposedly used for his inspiration to write, The Hills Have Eyes.

When people begin dying in gruesome fashion in a rural New York town, the local health inspector begins an investigation in which he finds that killer mutant slugs, created by toxic waste, are on the rampage. Naturally, no one believes him, and he's forced to take matters into his own hands as the body count rises.
Slugs is a wonderfully cheesy 1988 horror film directed by Juan Piquer (Jp) Simon and based off the book by Shaun Hutson. While you may not be familiar with Jp Simon, you are probably at least aware of two of his more infamous films, Pod People (famously spoofed by MST3K) and Pieces, which is a trashy gore flick that happens to be a personal favorite of mine.

During WWII, a squad of Nazi soldiers are sent to a small Romanian village to guard a large, stone fortress. Once inside, they notice that the walls are embedded with hundreds of silver crosses, and the keep's caretaker warns them not to stay.
Captain Klaus Woermann, however, is not scared of the superstition surrounding the ancient structure and orders his men to set up a generator and lighting system so they can secure the fortress. Embedded within the walls of the keep are hundreds of metallic crosses, which Woermann's men believe are silver.
Thinking they are going to strike it rich, two of the men begin to pry one of the crosses out of the stone, but end up unleashing an ancient evil force that begins to kill the soldiers. With bodies piling. Woermann makes a call to his superiors and asks that he and...

I hate the term, torture porn, but...
I've learned that whenever a horror movie is described as “the most shocking/disturbing film” it's usually code for, “we didn't have much of a story, so we're going to throw a bunch of brutal images at you so you won't notice.”
2008's Martyrs is a French horror movie that's been billed as one of the most disturbing movies you'll ever see.
The movie starts with a young girl, Lucie, who escapes from a torture chamber and is taken to an institution where she's befriended by another young girl named Anna. Anna acts as a mother figure to Lucie, giving her comfort whenever she has nightmares about her terrible ordeal. We cut forward 15-years to a family living in the suburbs. They're having breakfast and joking with each other when a knock comes at the front door. When dad opens the door,...

A paint-by-numbers horror movie. A church in a small town burns to the ground and an investigating firefighter is taken over by a parasitic creature that has been buried for over 100-years. This creature can only stay with a host for a short period of time before it needs to seek out a fresh body, and as it jumps from victim to victim, the body count begins to rise. In no time, the town bad boy, Scott, is blamed for the murders and he along with his girlfriend, Jesse, must solve the mystery of the creature and find a way to stop it.
There are movies that grip you in the first ten-minutes and you know that you're in for a ride you won't soon forget. Scourge isn't one of those. In fact, you'll probably start to forget it within ten-minutes of watching it. The...

Sometimes you just want to see monsters tearing people to shreds.
A group of people are relaxing at a bar located in the middle of nowhere when suddenly, a man bursts in and tells the patrons that they only have a few minutes to lock down the establishment before a horde of hellish creatures descend upon them, and he even has one of the creature's severed head to prove it. After a bit of bickering with the locals, he proudly announces that he's the only one who can save their lives. He no sooner finishes his speech than does a monster smash through a window and drag him to his extremely bloody death.
This opening scene sets the stage for one of the better horror films I've seen lately. Feast makes no apologies for what it is, which is a non-stop action blood fest, and...

A typical ghost story that's not so typical.
An ex-con who has just been released from prison and is trying to put his life back together moves into the apartment where his mother died some months ago. Almost immediately, he begins hearing strange noises and seeing strange visions. His problems become worse when he sees that his neighbor, a cop, is abusing his wife and child. Not wanting to violate his parole, he is torn as to whether to get involved or keep to himself.
On the surface, it might be easy to dismiss The Echo as a typical haunted house story, but then you'd be missing out on a solid, if not somewhat predictable film that offers some real chills.
What I really liked about this movie was the fact that the main character who's getting terrorized is a 'tough guy' which is something...

Jimmy and Jack DeGrasso (played by Daniel McCabe and Lawrence Bucher respectively) are criminal brothers who don't get along and are led by their Uncle Sal in a small-time drug empire. When Jack finds Sal brutally murdered in his motel room, he has a vision in which Sal tells him to kill everyone who played a part in his murder. Not content to just get those who are responsible, Jimmy and Jack go on a killing spree and take out everyone they meet along the way while searching for their uncle's killers.
Mutilation Mile is a very low budget 2009 exploitation flick directed by Ron Atkins that's supposedly based on true events that happened in 1993.
Now, I like exploitation flicks, but this one was tough to sit through, not because of the violence, but because it was such a chore to watch. There's almost nothing to this movie.

Pure exploitation trash with a veneer of style.
Catholic schoolgirls, Rebecca (Christina DeRosa) and the virginal Catherine (Cheryl Lyone) are selling bibles door to door to raise money for school when they knock on the door of the wrong house at the wrong time.
In the house is gang leader and pimp, Lobo, played by Peter Tahoe who has just shot and killed one of his ‘girls’ for stealing his drugs. Lobo and his gang kidnap the girls, and Rebecca is killed while being forced to play Russian roulette. Catherine is then taken out to the woods where she is raped and left for dead.
Naked, she eventually stumbles onto the highway where she is picked up by a passing motorist and taken to a hospital. Soon she recovers, and feels compelled to exact her revenge on her assailants.

We've seen zombies attacking in small towns, on remote islands and even in shopping malls, but 2010's, The Dead, gives us a new location for a zombie flick, Africa.
The film opens up as a group of people on a plane are fleeing the rising of the dead only to find that the plane wasn't properly fueled in their haste to leave. They crash just off an African coastline and Lieutenant Brian Murphy (Robert Freeman) comes away as the only survivor.
The action cuts to an African village that is under siege by zombies as the military is trying to hunt down the living dead and save the survivors. A young boy escapes and is taken away by the army, and we meet our second main character, Sergeant Daniel Dembele (Prince David Osei).
Brian and Daniel's paths eventually cross, and while they come from vastly different cultures,...

Polly Watt and her boyfriend go out to do some camping, but when their tent breaks, they decide to spend their romantic weekend in a motel instead. As they drive off, they are flagged down by two criminals on the run, who kidnap them at gunpoint and make them head for the border to Mexico where they can make their escape.
Their vehicle begins to overheat, and they are forced to pull into a gas station/convenience store. Once inside, they become trapped by a parasitic organism that transforms their hosts into bloodthirsty monsters.
While Splinter is a low budget movie, director Toby Wilkins, manages to pull off a well-crafted horror flick that squeezes everything it can out of its one sparse location and three main characters.

Monsterwolf is the kind of movie that ten minutes in you'll be saying to yourself, “Oh god, I don't think I can get through this one.” It's also the kind of movie you'll pause to check the time and say, “Oh god, I can't believe it's only half over. I don't think I can do it.”
Released in 2010 as a Syfy original, Monsterwolf is about an evil oil company that's trying to drill in a small town, but is being fought by the local native American tribe. Actually, it's only one native American, but I guess they couldn't afford to flesh out the cast. If it sounds like you've seen this film before, you probably have, it's called On Deadly Ground, starring Steven Seagal.
The oil company drills into an ancient Indian burial ground and unleashes a wolf creature that's hell bent on exacting its revenge.

Like many famous directors, Peter Jackson, (King Kong, Lord of the Rings) cut his teeth doing horror films, and his most notorious horror flick is the 1992 film, Dead Alive, also known as Brain Dead, which has been billed as one of the goriest films ever made.
But while other directors did serious horror films, Jackson opted for a black comedy filled to the brim with blood and gore. And it is indeed a trip that every horror fan should take at least once.
The film opens up on a place known as Skull Island, where Stewart, an explorer, is transporting a live specimen to take back for an exhibit at the zoo. This animal is the Sumatran Rat-Monkey, and is greatly feared by the natives because one bite from it can spell disaster.
