Based on its setup, The New Daughter would appear to be a ghost story. A troubled novelist moves his two children into a large and isolated house in rural South Carolina, and immediately they start to experience things that cannot be so readily explained. The audience might soon expect to see spirits of the dead haunting the film’s family, yet the fact is, something else entirely lurks on this cursed property.
Kevin Costner was coming off positive reviews for his villainous role in the psychological thriller Mr. Brooks when he was cast as the father in The New Daughter. Religion-based horror movies have a tendency to become box office cash cows, and even though they struck out with Devil's Due, Fox is looking to stay in the game with a new biblical terror tale entitled The Unseen.
According to THR, Fox has bought the biblical thriller script The Unseen, written by John Travis, with Hutch Parker attached to produce.
The script is based on the short story "Mr. Pettinger’s Daemon," which appeared in John Connolly's collection of short fiction stories Nocturnes. The plot centers on a hospital cleric who is tasked with treating a fellow clergyman in a remote parish who has been displaying severe signs of mental illness. When he arrives, he discovers that the root of his colleague's erratic behavior is a biblical force of evil that is trying to surface from deep below the church.

Chicago – From “The Exorcist” to “Orphan,” the horror genre has a long history of films about a young lady becoming something truly dangerous. The latest, “The New Daughter,” comes courtesy of the man who wrote the great “[Rec]” and stars Kevin Costner and Ivana Baquero (“Pan’s Labryinth”). Sadly, after a strong set-up and with gorgeous cinematography throughout, “The New Daughter” flounders in cliches and ends up too dull to be terrifying.
Blu-Ray Rating: 2.5/5.0
Costner plays single father John James, a man who moves to an old house in South Carolina with his daughter Louisa (Baquero) and son Sam (Gattlin Griffin). Faced with the struggle of fatherhood after his wife left her family would be scary enough but Louisa also happens to be on the cusp of adolescence, which allows writer John Travis (“The Haunting of Molly Hartley”), working from a short story by John Connolly, to play with the classic...

As Louisa’s troubling behavior continues, far beyond the average tween angst and frustrations, John begins doubting his parental abilities. But when events around the James household start taking on an increasingly mysterious nature, John realizes that his family may be in mortal danger. Co-starring Samantha Mathis (The Punisher, The American President), The New Daughter is...

The New Daughter, from Anchor Bay studios, will release May 18th on DVD and Blu-Ray formats, but what of the reviews? The Boston Globe newspaper describes The New Daughter as "few anticipated this under-the-radar supernatural thriller" (Boston). Apparently the film appeared in theatres without notifying anyone. Brad Miska, the managing editor at Bloody-Disgusting, says of The New Daughter: "I have to wonder why they even bothered...if no one came for the party" (Bloody)? So, there is a wide gamut of impressions on the film. With a large grace period between now and the release date, fans can do a little more digging to find out if the DVD is one of Anchor Bay's better releases.

As part of a bumper crop of Halloween theatrical releases, two movies dealing with young people have arrived—one that explores and elicits anxieties over out-of-control teenagers, and one aimed directly and simplistically at the mindset of that age. Guess which one is better? And guess which one is getting the wider break?
Eden Lake, the directorial debut of My Little Eye scripter James Watkins, is slinking into very token theatrical release like a beaten child—in the New York area, its sole venue is somewhere in Queens—prior to its wider DVD exposure in January. Like so many films granted such negligible big-screen treatment, it deserves better. In the film, it’s the children who deliver the beatings, as writer/helmer Watkins presents a scenario ripped from British headlines about violent youth sometimes referred to as “chavs,” junior hooligans who have no respect for authority or compunctions about reacting...

The players: Director: Mickey Liddell, Writers: Rebecca Sonnenshine, John Travis, Cast: Haley Bennett, Jake Weber, Chace Crawford, Shanna Collins, Shannon Marie Woodward
Facts of interest: None whatsoever.
The plot: Ever since her mother tried to kill her, Molly Hartley has been hearing voices and seeing weird things. Now she's about to discover a devilish secret her parents have kept from her for years.
Our thoughts: Mickey Liddell’s directorial debut “The Haunting of Molly Hartley” is an ugly mess. And honestly, that’s pretty much all there is to say about it. For the sake of offering you more than two sentences though, let me further explain why this amateurish horror thriller is a massive failure.

It's Street Scene weekend here in San Diego, which means this Woman is out dancing in the streets to an eclectic mix of music with an even more diverse crowd of people, so this Weekly Wrap-up for September 13-19, 2008, is going to be a tad abbreviated. But, after looking over the stories of what transpired during that period, there doesn't seem to be a very large quantity of stuff to rehash anyway.

We’ve been very lax on getting you guys any updates about the upcoming thriller The New Daughter, mainly because every time I see a pic from it with Kevin Costner looking off into the distance, I get flashbacks of The Postman and have to curl up into a ball for an hour or so. Not very productive, that.
John Travis, who co-scripted The New Daughter, talked to Fangoria recently about his thoughts on the film, and it inspired me to move past my hang-ups and start talking about it again. For those unsure, Costner plays a father who relocates his daughter (Pan’s Labyrinth starlet Ivana Baquero) and son to a farm in South Carolina. Once there, a mysterious mound that the father believes to be an Indian burial mound is discovered on the property, the source of which turns out to be much worse than any of them imagined.
