The legendary test pilot Chuck Yeager took Philip Kaufman, the writer/director of the lauded 1983 space race epic “The Right Stuff,” for a ride in his plane during production. And at one point the man who broke the sound barrier in 1947 turned over the controls to Kaufman as he also turned off the engine. “He thought it would scare me being one of the ‘Hollywood’ guys,” Kaufman told me in a 2003 L.A. Times interview. “I just sort of looked at him and smiled, because I knew there was something blessed about this man. The funny thing about Yeager is that he would drive out to the sets, particularly in the high desert, and he would not go above the speed limit. He was the fastest man alive, but he wouldn’t go over 55 because he knew how dangerous it was on the highway”

There is a certain relish to the way Scott Glenn describes a knife. His voice – a sort of Midwestern drawl that has a touch of Pittsburgh flint and a lot of Ketchum, Idaho, where he's called home for decades, in it – stays slow and steady as he talks about some of the various weapons he's been using in his martial-arts training lately. You can tell from the gleam in his eye, however, that the actor is getting a serious kick out detailing his recent discoveries in self-defense cutlery.

Tonight, explorer Darrell Miklos’s hard work pays off on the finale of Cooper’s Treasure — when he discovers a historical anchor believed to be from Christopher Columbus’s era. The find is his biggest discovery of the series after he traced it using maps and charts drawn by the late astronaut Gordon Cooper from space. Miklos believes that that same information holds the key to potentially billions in unclaimed sunken treasure. The spot where he finds it is part of the so-called Columbus Trail where many Spanish ships — mainly from the late 1400s to the 1600s — met their watery graves. In the episode Miklos and...read more...

“Cooper’s Treasure” is currently being discovered by viewers, and there’s good reason to board the sea-bottom series. The Discovery show follows the underwater expeditions of Darrell Miklos, who just might have the most valuable and unique treasure map in the world — or rather, from out of this world. Yeah, the map is from space. Here’s the backstory: Miklos’ friend Gordon Cooper was one of Nasa’s first seven astronauts in the 1950s. During one of his missions, while Cooper claimed to be scouring the globe for nuclear sites, he actually discovered something else: shipwrecks. Working for decades in secret,...

Discovery tonight premieres its fascinating new series Cooper’s Treasure, which follows the hunt for potentially vast sums of hidden wealth — using drawings and maps made by an astronaut from space. Gordon Cooper was one of the “Original 7” astronauts back in the 1960s. All were celebrities of their day, with Cooper the youngest and most rock star-esque of the bunch. He still holds the record for the longest solo space flight in Us history, which he claimed when he first took orbit in Mercury-Atlas 9 in May 1963. But during one of his missions, when he was looking for nuclear sites...read more...
