Warning: contains spoilers for the Shetland series eight finale.
Blood is everything to the Bain family, said Kieran Quinn in the Shetland series eight finale, and how right he turned out to be. Shetland fans had been prompted to consider whether or not Kieran was Ellen’s father as far back as episode three, when Di Ruth Calder first suspected her own dad of having had an affair with Stella Bain that resulted in Ellen’s birth, but the truth turned out to be all about Bain family blood.
Let’s break down the revelations and twists of the finale, along with any other questions left dangling about the life and death of Ellen Quinn, and the events of series eight.

Warning: contains plot spoilers for Shetland series 8 episode 4.
“The Bains take care of their own,” said Bain family matriarch Grace in the Shetland series eight opener when her 23-year-old granddaughter Ellen was declared missing. “Ellen’s a Quinn,” corrected Grace’s son-in-law Kieran Quinn. But is she?
That was the line of inquiry investigated by Di Ruth Calder in episode four, after she heard from a reliable source that when Ellen’s mother Stella was very young, she had a relationship with Ruth’s father. The local Church of Scotland reverend, now-deceased, was the leader of a youth group attended by young Stella, which set Ruth’s mind to thinking – could Ellen have secretly been her half-sister, conceived and born years after Ruth left Shetland as an 18 year old?

Robbin Bain, who was the fashion and beauty expert on NBC‘s Today during the early 1960s, died in Southampton, NY, on October 21. She was 87. Her daughter Lara McLanahan told Deadline that she had been battling breast cancer. Known to viewers as “Today Girl,” she joined the NBC show in 1961 to discuss fashion, cosmetics and other female-led topics. She worked alongside the host John Chancellor and news anchor Frank Blair. However, she only stayed in the role for two months, leaving the show after she became pregnant with daughter Dina. “I was the only woman, with the exception of the makeup woman, on the set,” she recalled during a 2012 TV reunion of “Today Girls.” Deborah Norville and Robbin Bain during the “Today” show’s 60th anniversary episode TV icon Barbara Walters, who died last year, was also a “Today Girl” early in her career after joining the show in 1961 as a writer and researcher.

Her public career began in 1959, when she was named as Miss Rheingold, then the most popular beer in the New York region. For her win, she received $50,000 and spent the next year making appearances in the United States and Europe.
She turned to modeling, appearing in ads for Helena Rubinstein and Revlon. She was also one of four women, called “Portrettes,” who introduced Jackie Gleason on his television variety show, The Jackie Gleason Show, in 1956 and 1957.
Early in her career, she changed her first name to Robbin to avoid confusion with the actress Barbara Bain.

After Di Jimmy Perez deliberately sacrificed his career in the name of justice (if not the law) and went off to pastures new with nurse Meg at the end of series seven, Shetland now has a new sheriff in town. Sort of.
While DS Tosh performs the duties of acting Di at Lerwick Police Station, detective Ruth Calder has come up from London in search of a missing witness in a serious crime case. Exclusive: X-Men and The Last King Of Scotland star James McAvoy is set to make his feature directorial debut on a movie about the true story of two Scottish lads from Dundee who conned the international music industry by adopting American accents and pretending to be established Californian rap duo, Silibil N’ Brains.
In the late 90’s, Gavin Bain and Billy Boyd had their musical ambitions consistently ridiculed for having the ‘wrong’ accents so they went for broke and reinvented themselves as Californian rappers. The currently untitled movie will show how the duo re-recorded their own tracks with fake accents and turned up in London claiming to be an established duo on the Cali scene as well as childhood friends with Eminem. They quickly bagged themselves a record deal, a hefty sum in advances, and an appearance on MTV…until it all came crashing down.

In her CoSign interview, Bain tells Consequence she found comfort in working with producer Chloe Kraemer, who she describes as now one of her best friends. “She reflected myself back at me in a lot of ways,” she says. “These songs are all about queer experience and being a queer woman, and I think that working with another queer woman helped get those songs out and treat them with the kind of romance that they need and deserve.”
Other collaborators on In the End include Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon (“Over There”), Muna’s Katie Gavin, and Matty Healy (“Sunshine Baby”) and George Daniel of The 1975, the latter of whom co-produced multiple tracks.

Two private equity investors are doubling down on stage space in the heart of Hollywood.
Betting on continuing demand for soundstages amid a global crunch, Bardas Investment Group and Bain Capital Real Estate announced on Thursday a 600 million redevelopment of the former Television Center, at 6311 Romaine St., that will transform the facility into a 620,000-square-foot studio campus with four stages. The announcement comes a year after the duo in a joint venture acquired the neighboring site of a shuttered Sears to redevelop into Hollywood’s first purpose-built studio campus to be built in more than 20 years. There’s a reason why event producer Bob Bain didn’t employ a host for this year’s two Creative Arts Emmy ceremonies. He has 45 awards to give out on Saturday, Sept. 3, and 48 categories to honor on Sunday, Sept. 4 — which means there’s little time for anything else.

Instead, the two Creative Arts ceremonies will open with short monologues, while other comedic breaks will be sprinkled throughout the shows. But Bain’s goal...
