Though I can count such films with the fingers on one hand, I end up finding something irksome even in those. This week I watched the Netflix original film Good Sam starring Indian-American actor Tiya Sircar – directed by Kate Melville with a significant female crew – and was pleasantly surprised. Kate Melville is an award-winning filmmaker and screenwriter. Her debut feature Picture Day premiered at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival and won the Borsos Prize for Best Canadian Feature. After having worked extensively in television, Kate brings us the light-hearted albeit impossible plot of an ideal world that still nurtures good Samaritans.

Don’t let the holidays keep you from enjoying a bawdy good Red Band not-safe-for-work trailer: Paramount today released a new one for What Men Want, director Adam Shankman’s gender-switched re-do, starring Taraji P. Henson, of Nancy Meyers’ 2000 romantic comedy What Women Want.
Henson, of course, takes the Mel Gibson role, and while a trailer released last summer efficiently set up the mind-reading premise, today’s Red Band clip adds a glimpse of the raunchy tone that any comedy peering into the mind of the male had better be prepared for.
Actually, Henson gets things off to a fine Red Band start with a shout of “Listen up assholes!”
But the trailer truly earns its Red Band with a quick scene featuring Saturday Night Live‘s Pete Davidson, a co-worker in the sports management company for which Henson’s Ali Davis works and struggles. And Ali doesn’t even...

Looking into the minds of men could provide enough darkness for any number of horror films, but Adam Shankman’s What Men Want starring Taraji P. Henson goes for the laughs.
In this remake of Nancy Meyers’ 2000 romantic comedy What Women Want, Henson takes the Mel Gibson role as Ali Davis, a successful sports agent who’s constantly boxed out by her male colleagues.
The official summary: When Ali is passed up for a well-deserved promotion, she questions what else she needs to do to succeed in a man’s world… until she gains the ability to hear men’s thoughts. With her newfound power, Ali looks to outsmart her colleagues as she races to sign the next basketball superstar, but the lengths she has to go to will put her relationship with her best friends and a potential new love interest (Aldis Hodge) to the test.

This is timely — Wind Dancer, the company of Home Improvement co-creators Matt Williams and David McFadzean, has put in development a TV series, in which an anonymous Good Samaritan leaves cash for strangers throughout Los Angeles. The project is not inspired by the current Hidden Cash frenzy, in which an anonymous millionaire hides money-filled envelopes in La, posting clues about their location on Twitter to amass 355,000 followers since launching the social experiment in San Francisco about a week ago. Instead, Wind Dancer is adapting Good Sam, the debut novel of the company’s president Dete Meserve, which is being published next Tuesday, June 3. In it, a female TV news reporter in Los Angeles is looking for the Good Samaritan (aka Good Sam) who is anonymously leaving $100,000 cash on strangers’ front porches throughout the city (trailer below). Williams and McFadzean executive produce with Meserve and Wind Dancer head of production Judd Payne.

Today the 2013 Spirit Awards were handed out and it was a dominating effort from Silver Linings Playbook as it won Best Picture, Director (David O. Russell), Actress (Jennifer Lawrence) and Screenplay (Russell). The only award it was nominated for and didn't win was Best Actor where Bradley Cooper lost to John Hawkes for The Sessions, but that's only a minor blip on the radar when you win this big. Among the early awards handed out, Stephen Chbosky's The Perks of Being a Wallflower won for Best First Feature while Derek Connolly won for Best First Screenplay for the romantic sci-fi film Safety Not Guaranteed. Then the Twitterverse exploded with a Best Supporting Actor win for Matthew McConaughey and his work in Magic Mike, which, for a time, seemed like it may be able to eek into that last Supporting slot at the Oscars. No dice, a Spirit Award it will have to be.

The jury of five favored Moonrise Kingdom, Bernie, Middle of Nowhere, The Loneliest Planet and The Master over other well-received truly indie titles such as Craig Zobel’s Compliance and James Ponsoldt’s Smashed. The Los Angeles Film Festival has announced the world premiere of Richard Linklater's Bernie as the opening night film for the 2011 festival.
The film will kick off the festival on June 16 at Regal Cinemas Stadium 14 at L.A. Live. It is written by Skip Hollandsworth and director Linklater and stars Jack Black, Shirley MacLaine, and Matthew McConaughey.
The film follows a beloved mortician (Black) from a small Texas town, even winning over the town's richest, meanest widow (MacLaine). Even after Bernie commits a horrible crime, people still will not utter a bad word against him.
"We're thrilled to be opening the Festival with the world premiere of this delicious black comedy - a treat from one of the most original and exciting voices in independent film, Richard Linklater," said Festival director Rebecca Yeldham. Spike Seldin has joined indie label Wind Dancer Films as senior vp. The hiring comes as Wind Dancer is making a major push to expand its production slate.
Los Angeles-based Wind Dancer Films was formed in 1995 by company principal Matt Williams and partner David McFadzean. Before that, Wind Dancer produced several TV series, including Roseanne and Home Improvement.
In 2006, the film company secured a development fund through private-equity investors and other sources that is coordinated by Merrill Lynch.
"With the development fund in place, it was clear to us that we had all the resources necessary to make quality movies," Wind Dancer president Dete Meserve said. "We were missing one component, and that was Spike."
Although Seldin has a background in comic books and animation, he said his vision for Wind Dancer is to make films with positive stories.
"It's less about comic books and animation and more about my love for elevating the human spirit and the hero within and positive stories, which is what we're going to be focusing on here," he said.
