Chatting with /Film's Max Evry over a recently released special edition Blu-ray of the 2015 documentary "Smoke and Mirrors: The Story of Tom Savini," the conversation turned, naturally, to horror and one of Savini's most well-known makeup fx contributions, George Romero's 1982 horror anthology "Creepshow." The classic October viewing staple hits its 40th anniversary this year and while many anthologies have followed in the EC Comics-inspired footsteps since, few have the lasting power of the Stephen King-penned original.
Filled with Tom Savini-engineered special effects for each of its five segments, "Creepshow" thrilled audiences with headless matriarchs, a creature-in-a-crate, a moss man, waterlogged ghouls, and cockroach kills. The fans love it, but Savini credits his longtime friend and the film's director George A. Romero for its legendary status. Savini tells Evry:
"George Romero. I mean, that's the simplest answer to that question. If you've seen "Night of the Living Dead...

All the way back in 1982, Stephen King and the late great George A. Romero colleborated on the first Creepshow film, an anthology-based homage to the horror comic books of the 1950s. It’s become a cult-classic, a film remembered fondly by most. It is, even all these years later, still a wonderful movie. 2019 sees Creepshow return, but this time as an anthology television show that will air on the horror streaming platform, Shudder. I was immediately excited about this, being a big fan of Creepshow (and Creepshow 2 for that matter), and had an opportunity to check out the very first episode of this brand-spanking-new series.

One of the many reasons George A. Romero's Creepshow continues to thrill and chill horror fans more than 35 years after its initial release is thanks to the makeup effects by Tom Savini (who also played one of the movie's garbagemen in the memorable wraparound segment). It's fitting, then, that Savini has been announced as the director of one of the episodes of Shudder's new Creepshow series, based on a story by Joe Hill, who played Billy in the film's wraparound segment.
Savini will direct an episode adaptation of Joe Hill's "By the Silver Water of Lake Champlain," working from a screenplay by Jason Ciaramella.

Back in 2008, Liam Neeson went full ‘beast mode’ playing Bryan Mills in the action thriller Taken. He reinvented himself as a middle-aged father, loving husband, and retired CIA agent with a passion for brutally merking bad guys without hesitation. Ten years later, Neeson’s still in the ass-kicking business, and why not? After all he is one of the founding members of the geri-action genre and clearly age is just a number… And his age is slowly catching up with his on-screen bodycount. But there’s no shame in that, the Irishman’s right-hook is still as strong as ever.
The Commuter is the fourth team-up between Neeson and Spanish director Jaume Collet-Serra, with their second outing being the similarly themed transportation nightmare on a plane Non-Stop (2014). But this time around, the boys are playing with a locomotive train-set in upstate New York, and of course mayhem ensues.
The setup is simple.

MaryAnn’s quick take… A lazy, insulting xerox of better movies about Liam Neeson growling into cell phones at enigmatic villains. Devoid of tension and mystery, and rife with plotholes that derail the trip. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
women’s participation in this film

Remember a few years ago, when Liam Neeson was on a Non-Stop transatlantic flight between New York and London and mysterious nefarious types texted him to say that they’d kill a passenger every 20 minutes unless $150 million was transferred to their account? And how he cares about stopping this because he’s law enforcement — the flight’s air marshal — and doesn’t want anyone to die?
Well, The Commuter is Completely Different. Here, Liam Neeson is on a Train traveling from New York, yes, but only up the Hudson Valley. And it makes many Stops at stations.

Chicago – Sometimes you’re just in the mood for a good old Liam Neeson ass-kicker… and “The Commuter” fits that bill. It asks, damn near requires, you to leave your brain safely at the station, but it moves too fast that you don’t have much time to think about it. It’s ludicrous, dumb and fun entertainment for January.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
Neeson is an ex-cop this time, now selling life insurance to try to put his kid through college. But he’s just lost his job, and after putting away enough liquid courage he boards his usual train home to tell his wife. He’s accosted by a pretty and well dressed woman (Vera Farmiga) who offers him a proposition. Find a passenger on the train, and he’ll get 100 thousand dollars in cash. Otherwise, all bets are off and his wife and son might not live through his commute home.

No matter how senseless the plots of his movies, Jaume Collet-Serra can direct the hell out of them – and The Commuter is no exception. The Spanish filmmaker, who wickedly used Blake Lively as shark bait in The Shallows, keeps the tension on such a high burner that you won't realize the whole thing doesn't add up until after you leave the theater. It teams Collet-Serra with star Liam Neeson for the fourth time, following Unknown, Non-Stop and Run All Night. Given the title, you might think The Commuter is merely Taken on a train.

From the moment Pierre Morel’s Taken unlocked a very particular set of skills in Liam Neeson, the actor’s résumé has been a roller-coaster ride of triumphant highs (The Grey) and disappointing lows (Takens 2 and 3). But a patchy record has in no way cooled Neeson’s interest in the action genre, as he’ll soon be back, back, back, as an unassuming insurance salesman for The Commuter.
Pitched as North by Northwest meets Strangers on a Train, Jaume Collet-Serra’s high-speed thriller was originally slated for a release in October, but we now have confirmation that The Commuter‘s journey won’t begin in earnest until January 12th, 2018. That’s a date it currently shares with Paramount’s animated flick Sherlock Gnomes, White Boy Rick and The Maze Runner: The Death Cure, which was hit with a delay of its own following Dylan O’Brien’s serious set accident.

Patrick Wilson has climbed aboard Jaume Collet-Serra’s The Commuter, joining both Liam Neeson and The Conjuring co-star Vera Farmiga.
The action-thriller, which is already lensing in London, marks the fourth collaboration between Collet-Serra and Neeson, following a relatively hot streak that covers Unknown, Non-Stop and last year’s Run All Night. StudioCanal and Lionsgate have pledged support to The Commuter, appointing Philip de Blasi and Byron Willinger to hash out a script that will surely have Neeson back in ass-kicking mode.
Indeed, out of the three collaborations, Collet-Serra’s latest is reminiscent of Non-Stop in that it appears to compress much of the high-octane action into a single location where Neeson, embarking on his usual 9-to-5, is pulled into an intense situation out of the blue by a mysterious stranger (Farmiga).
It’s one that involves Neeson’s insurance salesman scrambling to identify a select passenger before the train reaches its last stop.

Liam Neeson's latest thriller The Commuter adds Conjuring stars Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga...
The Commuter may be yet another project for Liam Neeson and director Jaume Collet-Serra (they previously made the likes of Non-Stop and Unknown together), but it'll also be a re-teaming for two stars of The Conjuring movies. Variety reports that Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga have joined the cast of thriller, in which Neeson plays a businessman who becomes embroiled in a criminal conspiracy during his train ride home.
It's being reported that Wilson will play Neeson's friend, while Farmiga will play "a mysterious woman who boards a commuter train and proposes an enticing opportunity for Neeson's character."
We're hoping that, in a meta reference to The Conjuring, Farmiga asks Neeson to help her exorcise a poltergeist lurking in the train's buffet car.
More news on Neeson's action-thriller exploits as we get it.

Yes, I sort of recycled that headline, but this might be the last time I get to use it, at least until Liam Neeson does another on-the-run movie. It seems as if Liam Neeson and director Jaume Collet-Serra have settled into a nice working relationship. They've already collaborated on actioners like Unknown, Non-Stop, and Run All Night, and now Deadline reports that they're about to team up again for a new thriller called The Commuter.
Neeson boarded this one a few months ago, back when there wasn't a director in place, and apparently StudioCanal fought to keep the creative partnership together and brought in Collet-Serra to sit in the director's chair. The plot, from first-time screenwriters Byron Willinger and Phil de Blasi, sounds a lot like Non-Stop on a different form of transportation, though it isn't being described as a parody. Production was originally supposed to begin this spring, but now it'll start this summer.
Really, the best thing to come out of Collet-Serra and Neeson's partnership so far was inspiring this awesome Key & Peele sketch:
Man, I miss those guys.

Together they’ve tackled psychological thrillers and airborne white-knuckle rides, but now Lionsgate and StudioCanal’s latest action flick The Commuter will make it four for four with Jaume Collet-Serra and Liam Neeson collaborations.

Pierre Morel’s 2008 cult actioner Taken really is the gift that keeps on giving for Liam Neeson. Barely a week has passed since we brought you the news that the Northern Irish acting vet signed on to topline Ruben Fleischer’s action-comedy The Revenger, and Deadline reports that Neeson is now on the cusp of joining another genre piece in the form of The Commuter.
Remaining in the wheelhouse of one-word action titles for the time being, the actor’s latest venture is to be scripted by Byron Willinger and Phil de Blasi, placing Neeson in the shoes of an unassuming businessman looking to make ends meet in New York City when, suddenly, he’s caught up in the middle of a criminal conspiracy. If you’re a fan of the star’s renaissance as a bona fide action star, you can probably guess where we’re heading with this one.

Liam Neeson may have just joined action spoof The Revenger, but he's got a serious thriller in the works now too.
Byron Willinger and Phil de Blasi are behind the script for the suspense movie The Commuter, which is due to shoot in New York in the spring (via Deadline).
Neeson will star as a businessman who gets stuck in the midst of a criminal conspiracy on his journey home.
The Picture Company and StudioCanal are behind the film, having steered Neeson in Unknown and Non-Stop.
Meanwhile, Neeson's movie franchise Taken is being turned into a TV series by NBC and will serve as a prequel to the films.
The actor won't be involved in the project, though.

It's kind of amazing that this far into his "Taken" launched renaissance, Liam Neeson has managed to skirt self-parody with his string of action thrillers. Granted, they haven't been very good, but they all deliver exactly what they promise—rote action, grizzled one liners—and are competently enough made they don't dip into camp. And it's keeping the lights on, and the bread buttered, so why should Neeson change up the playbook? Thus, he's got another movie on deck that will sound ridiculously familiar. Liam Neeson only just signed on for The Revenger, which seems likely to spoof the action films he’s become known for in recent years. Before that, though, he’ll be starring in The Commuter, which, if you ask us, sounds even more like a comic take on punch-ups.The new film, however, which has a script from Byron Willinger and Phil de Blasi, is more of a suspense thriller. Set to shoot in New York next spring (a director has yet to sign on), the plot finds Neeson as a businessman on his daily commute home – probably by train if it’s NYC, but he could have splashed out cash for a cab – who becomes caught up in a criminal conspiracy that threatens not just his life, but everyone around him… The fact that it’s not listed as an action thriller means he probably won’t be using his fists all the time,...
