Yellowjackets knows viewers are literally starving for season three.
So on Tuesday, the hit Showtime series played on its cannibalistic (er, survivalist) series theme by sharing a coy announcement that production has begun on the forthcoming third season.
“We know you’re starving… #Yellowjackets Season 3 is officially in production,” read a caption on Instagram (below). Among the series of photos is a shot of the episode 301 script.
The premiere of season three is written by the showrunning trio of co-creators Bart Nickerson and Ashley Lyle with Jonathan Lisco. Nickerson, making his directorial debut, helms the episode. Lisco will also be making his debut behind the camera when he directs episode 303.
Other shots in the set indicate a return to the wilderness, which is where the past timeline in the dual timeline series will continue to play out. Season three picks up after the shocking cliffhanger ending that saw the survivors...

While fans of the Showtime series Yellowjackets (read our review of season 2 Here) patiently wait to see the bonus episode that’s going to air sometime between the second and third seasons, showrunners Ashley Lyle, Bart Nickerson, and Jonathan Lisco have let it be known that season 3 – which was, of course, greatly delayed by the strikes that hit the entertainment industry last year – is finally going to start filming in May, aiming for an early 2025 premiere!
Christina Ricci and Juliette Lewis star in Yellowjackets, which is is described as “equal parts survival epic, horror story, and coming-of-age drama.” The story centers on a team of wildly talented high school girls soccer players who become the (un)lucky survivors of a plane crash deep in the Ontario wilderness. Due to WGA and SAG-AFTRA strike-related delays, Yellowjackets fans will have to wait until 2025 at the earliest for the show’s third season. But that doesn’t mean that fans will be spending the next year without any new episodes whatsoever. You read that right. In the interim, at a yet-to-be-determined date, Yellowjackets has a not-so-secret bonus episode just waiting to be released.
The Yellowjackets bonus episode has been a topic of immense speculation for fans of the show, even before season 2 premiered. Around mid-March of 2023, series co-creator Ashley Lyle tweeted that season 2 would have nine “main” episodes rather than 10 like season 1 did, specifically putting “main” in quotation marks. This, of course, led fans to ask why she would phrase it like this. To which Lyle replied “never say never to bonus eps” followed by the winking kissy-face emoji.
Fans first thought that this bonus installment might be a holiday...

This year’s Emmy Awards were all about TV reunions, while audiences around the country got to see the cast of “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Cheers” reunite, there were some unofficial ones that didn’t make the live broadcast.
Take the “Yellowjackets” cast and crew, who got back together before the show started.
The show was nominated for two Emmys including best drama series and lead actress in a drama for Melanie Lynskey. Hours before the show aired, the teen cast including Liv Hewson, Courtney Eaton, Sophie Nélisse, Sammi Hanratty and Kevin Alves had gathered in the lobby, chatting and taking selfies before doors to the main theater were open. They were joined by Warren Kole and later director Karyn Kusama and showrunners Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson, as well as Tawny Cypress.
Yes, season 3 is being written and the show is expected to be back in production in late May.

Fans of Showtime‘s hit drama series Yellowjackets have a long wait ahead of them, as Deadline reports that the third season will not be premiering until 2025. This is due to the production delays caused by the WGA and SAG strikes last summer, with pre-production on the psychological drama shut down just one day after the WGA strike began in May. According to Deadline, the writers room for the show reopened in September. Created by Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson, Yellowjackets follows a high school girls’ soccer team involved in a plane crash in 1996 and the aftermath of the event years later. It stars Melanie Lynskey, Christina Ricci, Juliette Lewis, Tawny Cypress, Lauren Ambrose, and Simone Kessell in lead roles. Despite the long wait until a new season, the cast has been keeping fans invested by teasing what’s to come, with Steven Krueger, who plays Coach Ben, anticipating “the wildest,...

When can you expect “Yellowjackets” to return to Showtime? We’ve got good news and bad news on that front. The bad news? “Yellowjackets” Season 3 isn’t expected until 2025.
The good news? As we learned last summer, a special bonus episode of “Yellowjackets” is headed our way before Season 3, so that should help tide us over until Season 3 proper!
The latest word on “Yellowjackets” Season 3 comes courtesy of Deadline today. The site notes that the season has been delayed to 2025 due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes that largely brought Hollywood to a halt this past year. But the writers room for “Yellowjackets” opened back up in September, so it’s only a matter of time before news starts trickling in.
Stay tuned for more on Season 3 as we learn it.
“Yellowjackets” Season 2 was nominated for a few big awards at this year’s Primetime Emmys, which aired just last night.

Following the writers and actors strikes that delayed production for most scripted series, the writers room for the Showtime psychological thriller reopened in September. Pre-production for the series was shut down just one day after the WGA strike began last May.

Samantha Hanratty still hasn’t seen any scripts for the third season of Yellowjackets, but she has some thoughts about where the group is headed in the series’ younger timeline.
In the 1996 wilderness, the cabin that had been sheltering the Yellowjackets team survivors went up in flames. What was Hanratty’s first thought when she saw that they were left in the dead of winter without a roof over their heads?
“I’m screwed,” she recalled when speaking to The Hollywood Reporter on the 2023 Emmys red carpet. “I’m screwed, because now I’m going to be so dirty. That’s all I keep thinking about, is how filthy we’re going to get. Because now we have no shelter at all. I’m going to be cold. I’m going to be dirty. And now we have nowhere to wash off our blood. So, we’re going to be gross.

“Yellowjackets” showrunners Ashley Lyle, Bart Nickerson and Jonathan Lisco gave an update on the status of Season 3 during a Q&a for SAG-AFTRA nomination committee members on Wednesday night.

The intent of THR‘s annual list of the 50 Most Powerful Showrunners is to provide an accurate state of the TV union — a rundown of the writer-producers selling in an increasingly fraught media climate, making culturally relevant and awards-friendly shows and serving the masses at a time when consensus entertainment has all but vanished. It’s also a great opportunity to pick some brains.
Those showrunners who made the 2023 list were polled on a variety of subjects. If Suits can become a streaming hit years after ending, what other shows deserve a similar fate? What IP are they dying to get their hands on? What’s already a pressing issue for the next WGA contract negotiation with the studios? And if they found themselves with a burner social media account, what would they do with it?
Here are some of the best answers to those and more questions.

After 148 days, the WGA strike has come to an end with the AMPTP finally agreeing to meet the Guild’s reasonable terms. While the Guild members still have to officially vote on and ratify the tentative agreement, WGA picketing has officially ended as of 12:01 am Sept. 27 and members are allowed to return to work during the ratification process set to take place Oct. 2 through Oct. 9.
However, just because the WGA strike is over, doesn’t mean that things are business as usual just yet. SAG-AFTRA is still on strike, and WGA members have been encouraged to picket in solidarity when they can and not cross picket lines by performing work on studio property. The SAG-AFTRA strike also means that filming can’t resume on any finished scripts until their terms are met as well. Karyn Kusama is one of many executive producers on Showtime’s blockbuster dual-timeline drama about the survivors of a plane crash, but she also has a very singular connection to the series: She directed both the pilot and the most recent season finale. Two years ago, she was tasked with introducing the world to the group of teenagers and their present-day adult counterparts, laying the groundwork for a show full of pathos, mystery and needle drops; this year, she shepherded the death of a beloved character (played by Juliette Lewis). She called THR fresh from a much-needed summer vacation to discuss some select season two moments and what she’d like to see for the future of Yellowjackets.

Somehow, Season 2 of Showtime’s hit drama “Yellowjackets” managed to keep its sense of humor, even as the series’ story got darker and, yes, it finally went full cannibal. It’s all about balancing the tone, which is something executive producer Karyn Kusama helped set last season as director of the show’s pilot.
Kusama tells Variety‘s Awards Circuit Podcast that the “Yellowjackets” balance of shock and guffaw comes out of the visions of executive producers/showrunners Ashley Lyle, Bart Nickerson and Jonathan Lisco. “They’ve always understood a tone that I really love myself, which is a kind of adrenalized intense experience that sometimes makes you feel like you need to laugh because you’re so nervous.”

“Yellowjackets” season two may have officially wrapped on Showtime, but meat is still on the menu. The Ten-time Emmy nominated series heads home to DVD this October.
Look for “Yellowjackets” season two on DVD on October 10, 2023, from Paramount Home Entertainment. The DVD features all 9 episodes of the second season, and exclusive bonus content.
The series was created by Ashley Lyle & Bart Nickerson (“Narcos”), described as being “equal parts survival epic, psychological horror story and coming-of-age drama.”
“Yellowjackets is the saga of a team of wildly talented high school girls soccer players who become the (un)lucky survivors of a plane crash deep in the remote northern wilderness. The series chronicles their descent from a complicated but thriving team to savage clans, while also tracking the lives they’ve attempted to piece back together nearly 25 years later, proving that the past is never really past and what began out in the wilderness is far from over.

Pedro Pascal, Kieran Culkin, Jeff Bridges, Michael Imperioli and Evan Peters were recognized for their performances in, respectively, The Last of Us, Succession, The Old Man, The White Lotus and Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, which were discussed and dissected in THR’s far-ranging conversation that touched upon everything from weird fan obsessions to who’s really in that Mandalorian suit.
Emmy nominees for actress (in several categories) The White Lotus‘ Jennifer Coolidge, Swarm‘s Dominique Fishback, Fleishman Is in Trouble‘s Claire Danes and Yellowjackets‘ Melanie Lynskey talked candidly and warmly about not always admitting who they are to inquiring passersby, requesting a therapist on set for emotionally wrecking scenes and what it’s like to become very famous later in life.

It’s June 15, ballots are out and Emmy voting is underway. Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to break down the ballots, the surprising submissions, the surprising omissions and more.
Other than Best Comedy Series and Best Drama Series, which are fixed at eight slots, the number of slots in categories is determined by the number of submissions. And unfortunately, it’s tough luck for the series regulars in comedy as the lead categories are going from six to five slots and the supporting one are going from eight to seven after missing the thresholds. That makes one of these categories easy to predict, but who will we drop from the others?

Last year’s breakout hit “Yellowjackets” swarmed awards season with seven Emmy nominations including Best Drama Series in 2022. The Showtime drama is looking to outperform those numbers this year by submitting 18 actors for consideration from its Season 2 cast. The Emmy ballots were officially unveiled on the Television Academy’s website on June 15, the same day nominations-round voting began (it will conclude on June 26 at 10:00 p.m.).
Most notable is Melanie Lynskey, who earned a Best Actress bid for playing Shauna Sadecki last year and currently ranks second in our odds to win the prize this time around. Cast mates joining her in the Best Drama Actress field are Tawny Cypress (Taissa Turner), Juliette Lewis (Natalie Scatorccio) and the teen version of Shauna, Sophie Nélisse.

For the six top writer-producers who gathered over Zoom in late April for THR‘s Showrunner Roundtable, the idea of a potential WGA strike was spoken of like an inevitability. And it was. With pens down since May 1, each participant has been out of work — including Tony Gilroy, who stepped away from season two of his pricey Star Wars series, Andor. But his deal to make that season, without a piece of the proverbial pie, is one of the reasons he supported a strike. “All I’ve ever wanted is to walk into the casino that I grew up in and bet on myself,” said Gilroy, to nods of agreement from Taffy Brodesser-Akner (Fleishman Is in Trouble), Ryan Condal (House of the Dragon), Katori Hall (P-Valley), Sharon Horgan (Bad Sisters) and Ashley Lyle (Yellowjackets) at mention of the disappearing ownership stake. “Because, right now, I’m either being wildly overpaid or wildly underpaid.

"Yellowjackets" was renewed for season three before the second season even premiered this spring, promising fans more chaos, cults, and cannibalism. Showtime confirmed season three in December 2022. The show's creators, Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson, have planned for the story of the ill-fated New Jersey soccer champs to be told over the course of five seasons, so the next season will put the story over the halfway mark.
But when the third season will finally air is, unfortunately, a huge unknown thanks to the ongoing writers' strike. Back in March, Lyle and Nickerson told The Hollywood Reporter that they were trying to start writing the new season before the strike began. "The possibility of the strike is very real. All we can do is keep moving forward until we have to put our pencils down," Lyle said. She added that the writers' room would begin officially meeting in April.

Judging by Yellowjackets’s previous hiatus, the Showtime drama won’t return for Season 3 until mid-to-late 2024 — and probably later, given the ongoing writers’ strike. But Ashley Lyle, the show’s co-creator and executive producer, says fans will get a bonus episode in the meantime. Lyle confirmed speculation of a bonus episode on Thursday, June 1, after a fan vowed to stay up late in hopes of a bonus episode that night. “Listen, I watched a livestream of a burning candle and the freakin’ Super Bowl on the blind hope of a trailer,” that fan tweeted. “Staying up a couple hours late on the off chance of a bonus episode? Walk in the park.” Lyle replied: “Noooo. Go to bed! Get some rest! There will be a bonus episode between seasons, but I love you guys, and I don’...

Wait, season 2 of Yellowjackets isn’t over?
Apparently, fans can look forward to at least one more episode, though it’s unclear when it will air. In a Twitter thread Thursday, Co-Creator Ashley Lyle promised a “bonus episode between seasons” of the Showtime drama. Yellowjackets was renewed for a third season in December, before the second season premiered in March.
Noooo. Go to bed! Get some rest! There will be a bonus episode between seasons, but I love you guys and I don’t want y’all to lose sleep thinking it’s tonight.
— Ashley Lyle (@ashannlyle) June 2, 2023
A spokesperson for the drama said no further information was available.
Season 2 of Yellowjackets came to an end over the weekend and drew 1.5 million total viewers over its premiere weekend based on Nielsen, comScore, and internal streaming data. The season 2 finale marks the second most-streamed Showtime original season finale ever, behind only Dexter: New Blood.

When it became clear that the second season of Yellowjackets would only include nine episodes, one less than the previous season, fans became convinced that a bonus episode was secretly being held back. Turns out, those fans were right all along.
Yellowjackets fans believed that the bonus episode would drop today. That didn’t happen, but series co-creator Ashley Lyle took to Twitter to confirm that the episode does exist. She didn’t offer an update on when fans might see the episode, only that it will premiere sometime before the release of the third season. “Go to bed! Yellowjackets fans won’t have to wait until season three for a new episode. One of the show’s co-creators, Ashley Lyle, tweeted on Thursday that a standalone episode — similar to Euphoria’s bonus episodes or the U.K. edition of The Office’s Christmas episodes — is on the way before a new season can start. No firm details such as air date or plot are available, though.
When a fan tweeted that they would be staying up late in hopes of a bonus episode, Lyle said to get some rest instead.

"Yellowjackets" hive, don't go into hibernation just yet: series co-creator Ashley Lyle has officially confirmed via Twitter (per Entertainment Weekly) that fans can expect a bonus episode to drop sometime between the show's just-ended second season and its third, which doesn't currently have a release date. Lyle has officially confirmed that the mythical tenth episode, which viewers started to speculate about after finding out season 2 was one episode shorter than its predecessor, does exist and will see the light of day -- eventually.
While Lyle didn't drop any hints about when viewers should expect more "Yellowjackets," she confirmed the bonus episode's existence in response to a Twitter user who planned to stay up late in case it dropped on June 2, 2023, a week after the finale premiered. After telling the user to get some rest, Lyle said, "There will be a bonus episode between seasons, but I love you guys and...

In the wake of last week’s Season 2 finale of “Yellowjackets,” which burned down a central location, killed off a major character, and wrapped up several storylines, you may be wondering how much longer you have to wait for “Yellowjackets” Season 3. Unfortunately, the team can’t work on writing the scripts due to the ongoing WGA strike – the blame there is not on the strike, we have to stress, but rather the studios and streamers refusing to pay their writers fair wages – so it’s probably going to be quite a while before Season 3 enters our lives.
The good news? Co-creator/co-showrunner Ashley Lyle tweets this week that a special bonus episode of “Yellowjackets” is planned, and it’ll air Before the Season 3 premiere.

The Yellowjackets are currently on strike, but they’re going to return with something for fans to buzz about. A bonus episode of Showtime’s “Yellowjackets” is expected to premiere before Season 3 officially premieres, showrunner Ashley Lyle has said on Twitter.

[This story contains major spoilers from the season two finale of Yellowjackets, “Storytelling.”]
The second season of Yellowjackets brought with it a tragic ending for one of the core castmates of the Showtime survival series created by Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson.
In the season finale, which released May 25, Juliette Lewis’ character, adult Natalie, was accidentally killed by Misty (Christina Ricci) during a wilderness reunion gone very wrong between the adult survivors of the 1996 plane crash that stranded the Yellowjackets soccer team when they were teenagers for 19 months, pushing them to cannibalism and other violence in order to survive. The series, which flips back and forth from 1996 to present day (and briefly introduced a third timeline of when the team is rescued), has featured Lewis as a series regular from the start. She makes up the core foursome of Natalie (Lewis), Shauna (Melanie Lynskey), Taissa (Tawney Cypress) and Misty, with Lottie (Simone Kessell) and Van (Lauren Ambrose) having expanded the adult survivors in season two.

Yellowjackets wrapped its second season on Showtime with a killer ending and a promise that things are going to get “weirder.”

As a result, some fans weren’t too pleased with how she, co-creator Bart Nickerson and their writers decided to wrap things up on the drama about a team of high school soccer players who survive a plane crash in the wilderness.

The Season 2 finale of “Yellowjackets” left us with dropped jaws — and a lot of questions. We still don’t know who “pit girl” is, but we did see how things escalate to the point where the survivors began hunting each other to stay alive.
Although, as creators Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson told TheWrap before the Season 2 premiere, not every question will be answered. Said Nickerson, when asked if he minded the comparisons to the often frustrating “Lost”: “I don’t always want everything to be answered. Like, I do and I don’t, because so much of what made ‘Lost’ so engrossing was the mystery, not just the mystery of what happened, but the sort of reclamation of the spookiness of being alive. You can’t give all the answers and maintain that spookiness.”
With that in mind, here are some of the most pressing issues that still need to be answered.

With Yellowjackets season 2 coming to a dramatic and emotional close, fans are likely eager to see what comes next for the survivors, both in the past and present timelines. The series received a season 3 renewal before season 2 even premiered, but that doesn’t mean we’ll get to see the continuation of this story anytime soon. Even though there was only about a year between seasons 1 and 2, the Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike has put an indefinite pause on the writers’ room for season 3, meaning it may take even longer for new episodes of Yellowjackets to reach our screens.
This isn’t necessarily a bad thing though. The show wouldn’t be what it is without writers, and they deserve to be paid a living wage and have their reasonable terms met by the studios. The writers’ room for season 3 was only able to meet for a day before...

At first blush, Showtime's hit series "Yellowjackets" seems like a natural fit for the modern TV landscape. It has a lot of the hallmarks that have made many other successes successful: a well-calibrated mix of established actors and exciting new talents lining the cast, a thematic preoccupation with trauma and the tricks of memory, muddy lighting design, a needle drop approach to music and a jukebox soundtrack, and more still.
But now that we've reached the dramatic second season finale, I can't help but linger on all the ways that its success is so atypical. In the sense that I'm using "success" and "successful," I'm not referring to viewership numbers (which are good) or critical opinion. I'm talking about fan reception. Specifically, the cultivation of one of the most active, rabid, engaged, and fiercely loyal fanbases in modern television, rivaled perhaps only by "Succession," but that's only a few days longer for this world.

When the Writers Guild strike began on May 2, it wasn’t just union members trying to anticipate what a months-long work stoppage might mean.
A number of industry and writer-adjacent organizations on both coasts had already begun discussions about the work stoppage’s potential impact in the weeks before negotiations between the WGA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers ended on May 1 without a deal. With the memory of the three months it took to reach a deal during the last Hollywood writers’ strike in 2007-2008 on the mind, industry and entertainment-adjacent organizations were on alert.
The challenge, a few tell The Hollywood Reporter, wasn’t whether they’d respond, but to what needs, when and for how long alongside what the WGA was already offering its striking members.
As of last December, that was $20 million in strike funds, according to the union, with WGA West’s...

Yellowjackets may thrive on the unknown, but co-creators Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson haven't been shy about revealing their grand plan for the Showtime drama. Lyle and Nickerson originally envisioned a "five-season" roadmap for the show, and despite making a few changes, they say they've largely stayed "on track" in Season 2. Showtime has already greenlit Season 3, but the question remains: Does Yellowjackets really have enough juice to sustain five seasons?...

[This story contains spoilers from the seventh episode of Yellowjackets season two, “Burial.”]
Ever since Yellowjackets co-showrunner Jonathan Lisco said that cannibalism wouldn’t be the most transgressive plot point of the second season of Showtime’s hit survival series, the audience has been wondering: What could be more morally confronting than watching that Jackie feast?
The seventh episode, titled “Burial,” answered that question when it ended with Shauna (Sophie Nélisse) beating Lottie (Courtney Eaton) nearly to death. The 1996 timeline picked up after the stillbirth of Shauna’s son, and with Lottie offering herself as a literal punching bag for Shauna’s grief, which has now turned into rage. Lottie lets Shauna swing punch after punch and doesn’t resist, as the rest of the cabin stands by watching and Lottie’s face is left nearly unrecognizable from the blows. But, the fight is intercut with scenes from the present-day timeline, where all of the adult survivors have finally...

Showtime's "Yellowjackets" is in the unique position of having two troupes of actors playing the same characters in two different timelines set almost 25 years apart. At PaleyFest 2023's TV festival last month, the entire cast was given the rare opportunity of appearing together on stage for one of the largest panels ever for the event. Two of those actors, Liv Hewson and Lauren Ambrose wouldn't have been on that stage if series creators Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson would have had their way, initially. According to them, Van was not supposed to survive her stint in the Canadian wilderness and would have been one of the first major characters to die.
In retrospect, it is something of a miracle that Van is still among the living. She's survived a plane crash, been mauled by a wolf leaving her permanently scarred, and she's been set on fire. Now that Lauren Ambrose...
