You don’t have to experience profound loss to know it’s debilitating. It sticks with you. No matter how you try to avoid it, the memories never fade. This is the reality of widower Eric Black (Tom Hughes) in Russell Owen’s sophomore feature, Shepherd. Touching on grief and guilt, and taking inspiration from Welsh ghost stories, Owen creates an engrossing experience that makes the audience feel they are going through every emotion that plagues the titular shepherd. He’s desperately searching for peace – but he may never find it.
“Such guilt so heavy a punishment endures.” The film quotes Dante’s Inferno in its opening frame, and the sound design that follows provides the sense that Eric is drowning in the pits of hell, so desperate to swim back up – like most with depression feel. He’s alone, living in a house in shambles, and the image of...

The incongruities abound at the start of Russell Owen’s Shepherd to put us in a state of unease the moment we discover Eric Black’s (Tom Hughes) wife Rachel (Gaia Weiss) has died at sea, her body lost. He and those who knew her fill her coffin with memories and keepsakes instead, a pile of objects that appear contemporary in their appearance despite them now inhabiting an old-timey wooden planked box sealed shut with rough nails from a bygone era. Did my eyes deceive me? Were Rachel’s belongings not as modern as I assumed? Was Owen’s setting always a window into the past? If not for the alarm clock that wakes Eric, I might have believed it. With its presence, however, it seems this widower is caught completely out-of-time.

"Delivers genuine scares." This film is worth a look. Saban Films has debuted a new official US trailer for Shepherd a horror film from a Welsh filmmaker. This one premiered at last year's London Film Festival and we ran a trailer last year when it showed up there. Eric Black is lost after the mysterious death of his adulterous wife. Running from his past to a new job as a Shepherd, he soon finds himself trapped alone on a majestic, hazy weather-beaten island with an ominous secret. One mans spiraling madness meets a vengeful supernatural force. Starring Tom Hughes, Kate Dickie, Gaia Weiss, and Greta Scacchi. This looks like it might be damn good - a seriously stylish and compelling thriller with some eerie shots and heaps of mystery and intrigue. I still really want to give this a watch when it opens here in the US soon. Check it out.

If there’s one genre that’s suffered criticism over the past couple of decades – and rightly so – it’s horror. So many movies have failed to be… well, scary, but here’s one that shows us (and hopefully a few filmmakers) how it’s done. Shepherd is crooked for all the right reasons.
It’s a major feather in the cap for writer-director Russell Owen, and this was borne out by the movie making an Official Selection at last year’s BFI London Film Festival.
The spectacular Scottish Highlands form the backdrop for the first part of this creepy tale, which incidentally was the setting for another modern British success story, 2002s Dog Soldiers. Here we find Eric Black (Tom Hughes), who’s recently been widowed by the mysterious death of his wife Rachel (Gaia Weiss) and has more than a few demons to contend with. After seeing a...

Saban Films has acquired North American rights to “Shepherd,” a supernatural thriller by writer-director Russell Owen.
Following its world premiere at BFI London Film Festival, “Shepherd” was released in theaters in the United Kingdom last month and has generated $19 million to date. It doesn’t yet have a release date domestically.
“Shepherd” centers on Eric Black, who finds work on a remote, weather-worn Scottish island after the sudden death of his wife. As his sadness continues to engulf him, so do the supernatural portents of his stark new surroundings. He soon becomes plagued by terrifying visions until it is clear he must confront his past trauma to survive.
The film stars Tom Hughes, Kate Dickie, Gaia Weiss and Greta Scacchi (The Player). Karim Prince Tshibangu and Aslam Parvez served as producers.
Owen calls the movie a “passion project,” one that is loosely based on a true story from his native Wales.

Scything strings, ticking clocks and a lighthouse bell tolling make for an atmospheric if Ott drama
“Something’s haunting you, Mr Black. I can see it. Hope you get the chance to confront it.” With this utterance coming from Kate Dickie, playing a one-eyed ferry operator who keeps a stuffed crow on her boat, you know that confrontation is a given. She’s just shipped Eric Black (Tom Hughes) and his collie Baxter across a menacing stretch of water to the prehistoric-looking Scottish island where a husk of a cottage and a job as resident shepherd await him. “Escaping or running?” she asks, but he dodges the question. What is left unsaid is that he has just buried his pregnant wife Rachel (Gaia Weiss), something his face – a study in pasty desolation – suggests he may have had a hand in.

"Something's haunting you, Mr. Black. I can see it." Darkland Dist. in the UK has released an official trailer for a British horror film titled Shepherd, the latest from Welsh filmmaker Russell Owen (Welcome to the Majority and Inmate Zero). This will be premiering at the 2021 London Film Festival first before opening in the UK this fall, though there's no US date set yet. When a deadly secret rots the mind of a grieving widower, the decision to work alone on a deserted island morphs into a terrifying race to save his sanity and his own life. One mans spiraling madness meets a vengeful supernatural force. What starts as the perfect wind-swept escape becomes a race to save his sanity and his life. Starring Tom Hughes, Kate Dickie, Gaia Weiss, and Greta Scacchi. This has a really cute dog in this trailer, I'm just really worried something bad is going to happen to it.

Written by Russell Owen and Chris Reading, Somnus is an upcoming sci-fi thriller that explodes with impressive, old school practical visual effects. How did this film that looks like a cross between Interstellar and Event Horizon slip through our fingertips until now? Who cares, we found it!

I’ve got a great trailer you've gotta watch for an upcoming sci-fi film called Somnus. The movie was directed by Chris Reading from a script he co-wrote with Russell Owen.
The story follows the crew of “an aging cargo ship on their final mission working the monotonous Earth-Mars shipping route. Malfunctions aboard the ship force a change of course to Somnus, a remote asteroid colony. The crew soon discovers the inhabitants of the colony have a dark past, and troubling plans for the future of mankind.”
This is the first feature film that Reading has made and it looks like it could be a pretty awesome movie! According to the press release, the film was inspired by the iconic work of Douglas Trumbull in such films as 2001: A Space Odyssey and Close Encounters of the Third Kind. So Independent Film Week is finally around the corner…coming to you from Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada within Strategic Partners, the second module of the Taps program 2011.
After a superb week in Berlin, back in June, on module one with the Erich Pommer Institut, expectations are high!
I am attending all three modules with our third project, feature fiction adventure Hector & Himself, a Dickensian style contemporary fable, which finds the protagonist, 25-year-old Hector, setting foot outside his attic room for the first time, after dreaming up an imaginary friend, Henry. His deranged mother has kept him drugged and locked up after his baby twin brother was snatched by a rabid fox in the dead of the night.
The project is in early pre-production and I am excited to meet future potential collaborators to progress into production.
With that in mind, my focus and drive for Ifp is on further sales interest,...
