Exclusive: Vue founder and CEO Tim Richards caused a stir last month with an intriguing appearance in front of the UK Parliament’s British Film & High-End TV Inquiry.
Launched by the influential Culture, Media and Sport Committee, the bipartisan inquiry has spent weeks interviewing industry figures as part of an investigation into the current state of film and TV production in the UK. Richards appeared at the session alongside Picturehouse Managing Director Clare Binns and Alex Hamilton, CEO of Studiocanal UK, who both expressed fairly downbeat conclusions about the current and future position of independent British cinema. Richards, however, was the dissenting voice.

Virtual Circle has been set up in response to the new 40% Independent Film Tax Credit (Iftc); the first two films, 2040 and Campbeltown ‘69, are expected to shoot this summer.
The aim is to use virtual production to “bring additional scale” to the films, said Davis.

Directed by Claudio Fäh (Northmen: A Viking Saga) from a screenplay by Andy Mayson, No Way Up is a high concept combination of disaster movie and survival thriller, as characters from very different backgrounds are thrown together when the plane they’re travelling on crashes into the Pacific Ocean. The stricken airliner comes to rest perilously close to the edge of a bottomless ravine with the surviving passengers and crew trapped in an air pocket. With their air supply rapidly running out, a nightmare fight for survival ensues as dangers from all sides hone-in on them.

Only 140 out of 1,686 industry attendees took part online.
After last year’s festival relied on an online industry offering, with many international attendees unable to attend in person, the screen sector was champing at the bit to return to San Sebastian, a festival cherished by many for its beach location and exquisite culinary offerings, which wraps tomorrow (Sept 25).
Industry professionals who did manage to attend in 2020 remember the city being something of a ghost town, with restaurants often closed and evenings spent holed up in hotel rooms. But for the 69th edition, which continued to offer a mix of in-person and online industry events,...

The U.K.’s National Film and Television School (Nfts) has successfully returned to production with some 60 films of varying lengths and genres, including graduation films, being shot since courses resumed in June.
The first test project to shoot trialling the U.K.’s Covid-19 production guidelines was the short “Our Love Is Here To Stay,” which looks at the practicalities of production in the time of coronavirus, and gets across its safety-first message in a light-hearted manner. It was shot on Stage One at the Nfts facilities in Beaconsfield.
Richard Lingard, course leader for assistant directing and floor managing at the Nfts, said there was some initial nervousness about going back into production. “The more we thought about it from the faculty level, the more we realized that it would be unfair to put students through something we haven’t done ourselves,” Lingard told Variety.

Last night, Edith Bowman played host to the British Academy Scotland Awards 2012, celebrating the year’s best and most promising talent in Scotland.
Previously known as the BAFTA Scotland Awards, the nominations were announced last month, with Ken Loach’s The Angel’s Share leading the pack, having taken home the Jury Prize at Cannes back in the spring.
The results have officially been announced, and Loach’s film didn’t disappoint, taking home the Best Writer award for Paul Laverty and Best Actor/Actress in the Film category for Paul Brannigan.
Zam Salim came away with the Best Director and Best Feature Film awards for his feature directorial debut, Up There, which was released in UK cinemas on Friday – if it’s playing in a theatre near you, this should definitely be encouragement enough to go and seek it out, if you haven’t done so already.

Formerly known as the BAFTA Scotland Awards, the nominations for this year’s British Academy Scotland Awards 2012 have been announced, with the ever-brilliant Edith Bowman officially set to host the awards ceremony next month.
Leading the pack with four nominations to its name is Ken Loach’s The Angel’s Share, which took home the Jury Prize at Cannes earlier this year.
Following closely behind with two nominations each are Kevin Bridges and Zam Salim, the latter nominated in both the Best Director and Best Feature Film categories for the forthcoming, Up There, which will be released on 16th November in the UK.
The Scotland-born Bowman has a wealth of experience that makes her a perfect fit for the awards, having presented pretty much every major music festival the UK has to offer through her career, along with hosting the Q Awards back in 2005 on BBC Radio 1.
