After torrential rain hit the festival with several setbacks in 2012, the festival organisers have responded by securing what looks to be one of the strongest line-ups of recent years. The Isle Of Wight festival is renowned for paying homage to its musical heritage by pulling in an eclectic mix of old and new bands that cater for the mainstream as well as the more leftfield, and the line-up for 2013 does not disappoint.
As well as attracting some real overseas big hitters (The Killers, Bon Jovi, Blondie) the line-up also boasts a collective of quintessentially British bands who have helped shape British music over the years (The Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, Paul Weller).
The sheer number of bands playing the festival’s three days (and Thursday night!) makes it almost impossible to see every band you want to. So we’ve picked ten of the greatest acts that- if for some...

A great opening lyric is like making a great first impression with someone special. You say the right words and they’ll love you forever. (whereas a bad opening lyric is like meeting for the first time with bad breathe and your flies open).
Great lyrics can be many things, they can incite and inspire, they can pull you gently in or grab you by the balls or sometimes they just sound pretty cool. Here we’re going to be looking at the 25 greatest opening lyrics of all time, so brush your teeth, check your flies and get comfy…

Madchester inches towards the West End, Ken Loach demonstrates the wonder of socialism, and Kathryn Bigelow can't tell one London bus from another
Rave on stage
Long shot as it may be – and Trash loves a long shot – I hear there are plans to turn Madchester film comedy 24 Hour Party People into a stage musical. The film's director, Michael Winterbottom, told me that he and producer Andrew Eaton have been toying with the idea for several years and that there is even a rough script "floating around". Steve Coogan is apparently interested in reprising his part as the lead. The show would tell the story of Factory Records, its founder, Tony Wilson, and the rise and fall of bands including Joy Division, Buzzcocks, A Certain Ratio and Happy Mondays. I'd personally love to see some genteel West End theatre transformed into a hands-in -the-air, tops-off sweatbox for a while, throbbing...

Few musical reunions are anything better than schmaltzy and many are far worse. But I still long for the Smiths to return
As a Grease fan, I approached the news that John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John have reunited for a charity with cautious optimism. Could they ever recapture the electrified magic of You're the One That I Want? I was hoping for a moment akin to that of Sonny and Cher's famous 1987 Letterman reunion. Naff, admittedly, but also strangely touching. I'll admit that seeing the way their hairstyles had transformed (Sonny's definitely had an inverse relationship to Cher's) as they sang I Got You Babe for the first time since 1975 brought a tear to the eye.
But it was not to be. Instead, I was treated to a low-budget home video of Danny and Sandy line dancing, set to a backing track of bland country-inspired Aor irrelevance, followed by...

Dates: 26th to the 29th July 2012 | Location: Lulworth Castle, Dorset

From the Beatles to Blur, more than 50 years of popular music are celebrated at London 2012 opening ceremony
More than 50 years of British pop music were honoured by Danny Boyle as part of his 2012 Olympics opening ceremony in east London. Featuring a megamix of artists from 1960 to the present day, an array of dancers performed to music from David Bowie to the Prodigy, via Blur, Amy Winehouse and the Specials.
There were many highlights during the often moving 15-minute section. Dizzee Rascal appeared onstage to perform a section of his hit Bonkers, while dancers in Day-Glo costumes appeared to hold their own rave-up to the music of Eurythmics, Happy Mondays and New Order. Underworld's Born Slippy also featured in the medley, a song that Boyle had previously used in the soundtrack to his film Trainspotting. And the ironic sight of the Queen having to listen to the Sex Pistols – whose...

The latter concerns underpin Joss Whedon's bracing meta-horror The Cabin In The Woods, the highly anticipated climax to this long, painful weekend of scary movies. Elsewhere, you'll find reasons not to lock yourself in a meat freezer to overcome writer's block in Below Zero, or to visit Galicia, even if you're from there, in Spanish comedy Lobos De Arga. In music, film, art and fashion, the 1990s are now making a comeback. But is this driven by nostalgia or does it reflect a shift in the national mood?
Between the whitewashed walls of Visions Video Bar, a London club, a crush of brothel creepers and flannel shirts throws spry shapes in the air as Nas's NY State of Mind segues deftly into Camp Lo's Luchini. "Tune!" howls a boy in a peaked cap to his girlfriend with an undercut.
London in the 90s? Wrong. This is Dalston in east London last weekend.
For many of us, the 90s was a decade imbued with anti-fashion, grunge and naff hair, seemingly mercifully resistant to a revival. But with the return of "Madchester" stalwarts the Stone Roses, a proliferation of grunge on the catwalk and yet another sequel to American Pie, it seems that the 90s are making a return.

Long time readers of the site will have seen this before as I’m reposting my love letter to Stephen Volk’s Ghostwatch on the occasion of Hallowe’en. A year shy of its twentieth anniversary it remains a landmark of paranormal drama and has just been reissued on DVD at a ridiculously low price.
Things have changed since the initial (and only) BBC broadcast. Everyone loves karaoke. Even those people who vehemently deny the fact – ply them with enough Babycham and they’ll be up doing their finest Tom Jones in double quick time, crooning like it’s noone’s business. And in the same way that the hugely successful Guitar Hero franchise channelled that inherent need we have to strum an air guitar in appreciation of a song, there have been a raft of games, lead by We Sing and Lips that succeed because of how infectious music is.
The track list is very much geared towards melding some fine karaoke classics, like Bananarama’s “Venus” and the frankly brilliant “Never Gunna Give You Up” by Rick Astley, with modern favourites from the likes of Adele and Coldplay and some additions from the Unspoken Classics Songbook like Bowie’s “Let’s Dance” and Madness’ “It Must Be Love”. British rocker Shaun Ryder has signed a deal to release his memoirs despite recently insisting he hardly remembers his hazy, drug-fueled days in the Happy Mondays. The star revealed he's regularly asked to pen his autobiography but admits his days of substance abuse had left him with a fuzzy memory of his heyday in the band.
He said, "I've been asked to write my autobiography, but I've not been interested. I'll do it in another 20 years' time. The only problem was I never kept a diary, so I'm going to have to use all the remaining brain cells to remember the Mondays days." However, publishing bosses at Transworld have persuaded Ryder to try and recall his colorful past and he will release the tell-all tome in the autumn.
He says, "I've been mitered (asked) for years to write my autobiography, but I've always said no because the timing never felt right.

Shaun Ryder has admitted that even he doesn’t understand his own songs.
The former Black Grape and Happy Mondays singer doesn’t understand why Factory Records boss Tony Wilson has previously described him as a “great poet” because he thinks there is nothing clever about his songwriting.
He told Q magazine: “Tony was one for great claims and that’s very nice of him, but I dunno. I write short stories and set them to music. I don’t know what I’m on about half the time.
“If I am a poet, then my school definitely didn’t spot it. I was in the lowest set for English. Did any teacher encourage me to be good with words? Did they f**k.”

Shaun Ryder has admitted that he wanted to appear on ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ but bosses blocked his sign up.
The ‘Step On’ hitmaker – who was famously banned by Channel 4 from appearing on live TV following a foul-mouthed outburst on ‘Tfi Friday’ – accepted an offer to take part in the contest, but his appearance was blocked by worried BBC chiefs.
He said: “I got offered ‘Strictly’. The producers wanted me and I was up for I but the head of the BBC said he wouldn’t take a chance on Shaun Ryder doing prime-time TV on a Saturday night.
“Why? I don’t know. Basically, you go and dance and then you keep your mouth shut while those guys on the panel tell you how s**t you are. I...

Stacey Solomon and Shaun Ryder opened tonight’s National Television Awards ceremony with an amusing collaboration.
The X Factor star and Happy Monday’s singer were last year’s King and Queen of ITV’s I’m A Celebrity ……Get Me Out Of Here but returned to their roots tonight with an impressive vocal performance…..well Stacey’s was good anyway!
During the ceremony at London’s O2 Arena, Stacey started off the singing with a low key rendition of ‘Feeling Good’. The song then ran into a duet of the Happy Mondays hit ‘Step On’, which Shaun first had a number five hit with in 1990.
Later in the show Solomon returned to the stage to accept a gong for I’m A Celebrity, which was named Most Popular Entertainment show.

The offending, underwhelming poster/DVD cover
“Most of all, I love Manchester. The crumbling warehouses, the railway arches, the cheap abundant drugs. That’s what did it in the end. Not the money, not the music, not even the guns. That is my heroic flaw: my excess of civic pride.” – Tony Wilson (Steve Coogan)
Maybe it’s the lame poster for the film, which does kind of make it look like a Trainspotting knock off about ravers, but Michael Winterbottom’s 24 Hour Party People is criminally under-appreciated.
Yes, ecstasy and warehouse parties do come into play, but the film is really the story of the Manchester music scene, circa 1976-1992 (all the way from the days of punk to the height of the “Mad-Chester” scene) as told by Factory Records founder Tony Wilson (the ever charming Steve Coogan).
The alternate poster/DVD box. Still not that great.

Stacey Solomon and Shaun Ryder are reportedly planning to release a Christmas single together.
The ‘I’m A Celebrity … Get Me Out Of Here!’ winner and runner-up – who formed a close bond while in the jungle – have revealed they are recording a version of classic 1987 festive track, The Pogues’ ‘Fairytale of New York’.
Shaun told the Daily Express newspaper: “We’re thinking ‘Fairytale Of New York’. We probably shouldn’t because the original is so good. But you can’t help meddling.”
The festive track will be released in time for the pair to scoop the Christmas number one spot if they can beat off tough competition from this year’s ‘X Factor’ winner Matt Cardle and anti-’X Factor’ group Cage Against The Machine, who are releasing a four-and-a-half-minute silent song.
Shaun recently admitted he is a “big fan” of Stacey – who reached ‘The X Factor’ final last year...

For his latest trip, Neon Indian's Alan Palomo, sought out a forgotten pre-computer age analog technology with the help of electronics wizards Lars Larsen and Edward Leckie. Together, they created this video for "Mind Drips," in which a girl slips into a hole in her bed with her big psychedelic teddy bear. After falling through some ether of oscillating waves and colors, she plummets back through her ceiling, presumably caught in some melty euphoria for eternity.
That's not the crazy wizard part though. These effects were achieved using a device invented by Larsen and Leckie called the Lzx Visionary -- an analog video synthesizer that manipulates images in the same way an audio synthesizer does for sound. "Mind Drips" is the first music video to utilize this unique machine in which all of the visual effects are recorded in real-time using "abstract pattern synthesis, video feedback, and analog compositing."
