DreamWorks Theatricals and Music Theatre International are launching a new Writers Program, in partnership with NBCUniversal’s Global Talent Development & Inclusion team, the companies announced today.
The DreamWorks Theatricals/Mti Emerging Writers Program will look to identify diverse teams of bookwriters, composers and lyricists with unique voices and perspectives to develop musical adaptations of popular DreamWorks Animation titles intended for the Music Theatre International catalogue.
The one-year, paid program will be open to individual writers, as well as writing teams. Selected applicants will be mentored throughout by DreamWorks Theatricals execs and other industry ambassadors. The program will also provide access to industry vets and agents via roundtable discussions, master classes, and individual meetings to advance career development.
“For over 25 years, DreamWorks Animation has inspired, moved, and challenged audiences with some of the most beloved stories and characters of our time,” said Chris Herzberger, SVP of Universal Theatrical Group, who heads up DreamWorks Theatricals.

Just a few weeks after the Disney Company roared that The Lion King had become the highest-grossing entertainment of all time, NBCUniversal today announced that Robert Greenblatt, chairman of NBC Entertainment, will oversee the company’s live-theater division, Universal Stage Productions. Jimmy Horowitz, Universal Pictures President, will “continue to run” Usp, while expanding its reach into NBCUni properties throughout film, TV and digital.
Chris Herzberger, Universal’s Executive of Live Theatricals, will continue in that position as hands-on with works in progress and a growing roster of developmental projects.
The company is not exactly a carpetbagger on Broadway, with a major stake in the long-running Wicked, a global box office phenomenon. Greenblatt is a producer of the most recent Tony Best Musical, A Gentleman’s Guide To Love And Murder and of a “revisal” of Meredith Willson’s The Unsinkable Molly Brown at the Denver Center Theatre Company. Exclusive: The much-ballyhooed Broadway revival of Side Show has a new above-the-title producer: Universal Pictures. Christopher Herzberger, Universal’s executive, live theatricals, pushed the deal, which I’m told includes a financial stake in the tuner. Lead producers of the musical, imported from the Kennedy Center, are Darren Bagert, Martin Massman and Jayne Baron Sherman.
Based on the true story of Siamese twins Daisy and Violet Hilton, the musical will begin performances October 18 at the Jujamcyn-owned St. James Theatre, with Erin Davie and Emily Padgett reprising their leading roles. Opening night is set for November 17. Rick Miramontez, spokesman for the show, had no comment.
