Next month’s Atx Festival, unsurprisingly, has made some programming changes amid the Writers Guild of America strike — including the cancellation of the 25th anniversary Dawson’s Creek reunion.
“There wouldn’t be television without writers. They have always been the rock stars of our festival,” Atx TV co-presidents and founders Caitlin McFarland and Emily Gipson said in a statement, “and though this year will look a little different, it will continue to be a place to showcase their talents and importance. The stories and characters we care so deeply about would not exist without them, and neither would this festival.

The 2023 Atx TV Festival is hosting an unprecedented Writers Strike Conversation in support of the ongoing WGA strike.
The strike, which formally began May 2, has led to the shut down of multiple productions in solidarity with the demonstrations. The Atx TV Festival has pivoted accordingly to announce the scrapping of certain programming with writers and showrunners unable to attend under strike guidelines. However, the festival has added a WGA on Strike! program with select WGA East and West members to address the ongoing concerns.
The Atx TV Festival announced an added conversation with some of TV’s leading writers discussing the current WGA Writers Strike. The panelists will discuss first-hand the issues at stake, the changes they’re fighting for, and why the strike is necessary to safeguard the future of not just writers, but all entertainment unions and creatives, per an official press release.

Penske Media Corp. has acquired Atx TV, the entity that operates the annual television festival in Austin, Tex.
The deal calls for Pmc, which is the parent company of Variety, to help expand the scope of the Atx brand with programming and activities beyond the four-day event in June that has become a key stop on the industry’s promotional calendar.
The Atx TV festival is heading into its 12th edition next year, set to run June 1-4. The company was founded by TV enthusiasts Emily Gipson and Caitlin McFarland, who put themselves on the map in a short time by smartly programming a mix of nostalgic reunions, lively table reads plus a mix of buzzy premieres and industry-centric panels. As expected, the Atx Television Festival is no longer moving forward as planned.
Co-founders Caitlin McFarland and Emily Gipson have opted to cancel the in-person festival, scheduled for June 5-7, in favor of what they're calling "Atx TV … From the Couch," a virtual gathering designed to celebrate the medium.
Major reunions that were planned to take place this summer — Scrubs, Cougar Town, Parenthood, Oz and the writers from Justified — are all being rescheduled for the festival's 10th season, which is now set for June 10-13, 2021.

Heads up, TV creators: If you’re sitting on the next big idea, Atx Festival is ready to hear it. The Austin-based TV festival’s annual Pitch Competition is currently accepting submissions, and 10 finalists will be able to pitch their show directly to studio executives before mid-year. Submit your idea here.
“The Pitch Competition represents a collaboration with Atx, The Black List and Sundance Episodic Program that celebrates the power of story and opportunity,” Atx Festival co-founder Caitlin McFarland said in a statement. “Ultimately, [co-founder Emily Gipson] and I started this competition within the festival based on the idea that access to decision-makers and building a community of mentors and fellow writers is imperative to creating television. More than any other medium, it is a community of collaboration and we wanted to build something that lasted beyond a single award or cash prize. As we go into our eighth year of the competition,...

Austin's Atx Television Festival lives up to its branding as a "TV camp for grown-ups." In its seventh "season," the fest is drawing voices from across the television landscape — showrunners, development executives, actors — delving into hot-button topics from abortion on TV to emerging platforms.
Founded in 2012 by former development execs and longtime friends Emily Gipson, 36, and Caitlin McFarland, 34 — who launched it all with a Kickstarter campaign — Atx started out with panels "as broad as 'showrunning' and 'comedies on TV,'" McFarland recalls. "As ...

Atx Television Festival co-founders Emily Gipson and Caitlin McFarland kicked off Season 6 of the Festival with great enthusiasm and very little pretense. Emily and Caitlin introduced their top staff and everyone gushed about what excites them. Top staff included Laura Kincaid (Director of Operations), Jennifer Morgan (Festival Coordinator), Willita Mahone (Volunteer Manager), David Sotelo (Tech Coordinator) and Ashland Viscosi (Sponsor Coordinator). Festival Ambassador Nick Wexler who recently played a cop on ‘Chicago Pd’ also spoke. All touched on the theme of TV Camp for Grownups. These ladies clearly are still thrilled to be putting their Festival together and take

Last Week’S Podcast: ‘The Amazing Race’ Host Phil Keoghan on Job Hazards: Too Much Sun and Sensory Overload — IndieWire’s Turn It On Podcast
If there’s a line in comedy, both Kathy Griffin and Bill Maher crossed it this month. Both comedians have made a career out of being politically incorrect –but given the reaction to their antics, Griffin’s photo shoot of a bloodied pumpkin head made to look like Donald Trump, and Maher’s casual use of the “n” word on his “Real Time” series, both took it a step too far.
But where’s the bar in comedy, when being offensive is often part of what it means to be a comedian? Back in January, long before the Griffin/Maher uproar, IndieWire’s Turn It On podcast spoke with Jim Carrey about how comedy has changed as standups have become more scrutinized by their every word.

One panel, “Television in a Trumped Up America,” promises a spirited discussion about how writers and TV shows are handling stories in a Donald Trump administration. Another, “The Revival of the Socially Conscious Sitcom,” will examine the recent growth of comedies aiming to recapture the progressive spirit of Norman Lear.
Liz Tigelaar (“Casual”), Monica Owusu-Breen (“Midnight, Texas”), Javier Grillo-Marxuach (“The Middleman”), and Michael Rauch (“Royal Pains”) are on board for the Trump panel, while Danielle Sanchez-Witzel (“The Carmichael Show”), Bob Daily (“Superior Donuts”), Justin Simien (“Dear White People”), and Mike Royce and Gloria Calderon-Kellett (“One Day at a Time”) are set to join the sitcom panel. Atx and The Black List partnered with Bad Robot, Carlton Cuse Productions, FX, Sony and USA Network on a new writing program, designed to find TV writers for staffing consideration across participating networks, studios and production companies.
The contest, which was announced this January, drew over 1,000 applicants. 16 winning scribes have been selected.
To be considered, writers had to submit their original pilots to The Black List’s website. The strongest pieces — both half-hour and hourlong content — were shared with studios, networks and production companies that were tasked with choosing writers with whom they’d like to work.
This year marks the inaugural contest for the Austin-based television festival, which kicks off today.
“Atx Television Festival strives to support TV writers — both established and up-and-comers — not just through the festival itself, and our year-round programming, but through key partnerships such as this with The Black List, so we thought this was...

With quality television on the rise and creating some tough competition for cinema, it comes as no surprise that TV shows are now getting their own festivals. One of the more prominent ones is undoubtedly the Atx Television Festival, which will take place in Austin, TX from June 5-8 to bring together small screen creators and innovators to discuss and celebrate the medium and both its place and development in the industry. "Each year we strive to surpass previous year's expectations in terms of showcasing programming from fan-favorite and premiere series. This year we are excited to add new networks like SundanceTV and BBC America, as well as continuing our partnership with Netflix, to appeal to a wide variety of audiences." said Atx Festival co-founders Emily Gipson and Caitlin McFarland. Highlights of the festival this year include the screening of a new episode of BBC America's "Orphan Black" presented...

What is Atx Television Festival?
That's the number one question its founders, Caitlin McFarland and Emily Gipson, get (so much so that it's the opening line on the festival's website). In a nutshell, Atx is a 3-day TV extravaganza -- June 6 - June 9 -- where fans mix and mingle with actors, reporters and showrunners while discussing their singular commonality: an unbridled love for television. Or, to state it more simply, "It's like TV camp for grown-ups," Gipson tells ETonline.

As for how Atx got started, McFarland tells me that it, ironically, had to do with movies. "I'd been to so many film festivals and loved the community they create during the time you're there. I wanted to work for a TV festival, and if I couldn't work at one, I wanted to go to one. But there wasn't one, so Emily and I sat down to decide what we'd...
