Beta Film, the powerhouse behind hits like ‘Babylon Berlin,’ has just given us a sneak peek at their latest project, ‘Rise of the Raven.’ Thanks to Variety, we got our hands on an exclusive first-look image of this 10-part series. They’re calling it one of the grandest European TV productions ever, and that’s saying something.
The story is a labor of love for Robert Lantos, a producer with roots in Hungary and Canada. You might know him from big titles like ‘Eastern Promises’ and ‘Barney’s Version.’ ‘Rise of the Raven’ is his latest passion project, and it’s shaping up to be something special.
This series dives into the life of Janos Hunyadi, a Hungarian army commander. With the actor Gellért L. Kádár bringing Hunyadi to life, we’re taken back to 1456. That’s when Hunyadi pulled off an incredible win at the Battle of Belgrade against a much larger Ottoman army.

European giant Beta Film, known for ambitious titles such as “Babylon Berlin” and “The Swarm,” has shared with Variety in exclusivity a first-look picture of 1o-part series “Rise of the Raven,” which it hails as “one of the most epic European TV productions of all time.”
“Rise of the Raven” weighs in as a passion project of Hungarian-born and Canada-based producer Robert Lantos, behind “Sunshine,” “The Sweet Hereafter,” “Barney’s Version,” “Eastern Promises” and “Crimes of the Future.”
A highlight at Beta Film’s showcase this Tuesday at the London TV Screenings, “Rise of the Raven” turns on the extraordinary feat of Hungarian army commander Janos Hunyadi, played by discovery Gellért L. Kádár, who in 1456 won a bloody, brutal Battle of Belgrade against a vast Ottoman force twice the size of his troops who were often farm labourers armed with just slings and patriotic fervor.

Principal photography is underway near Budapest on “Rise of the Raven,” an epic drama series produced by veteran Canadian producer Robert Lantos’ Serendipity Point Films (“Crimes of the Future”) and Beta Film (“Gomorrah”) that marks the most lavish TV production in Hungary’s history.
Adapted from author Bán Mór’s bestselling novels, the 10-episode series tells the story of the Hungarian warrior Janos Hunyadi, who defeated the Ottoman army in 1456 at the Battle of Belgrade, halting its march across Europe.
Lantos, whose producing credits include “The Sweet Hereafter,” “Johnny Mnemonic” and “Eastern Promises,” spoke exclusively with Variety about a passion project more than a decade in the making. He was joined by Oscar-nominated and Emmy-winning director Robert Dornhelm and Hungarian directors Attila Szász and Orsi Nagypal, who joined the conversation fresh off shooting an epic battle sequence outside Budapest.

At film festivals this season, Damien Chazelle’s First Man isn’t the only film exploring space, and the people dead set on conquering it—to their own detriment. Premiering in Toronto, Ryerson University grad Akash Sherman’s Clara examines an unlikely bond between an obsessive astronomer (Suits’ Patrick J. Adams) and an insightful young artist, bridging the art/science divide at the heart of cinema itself.
Meeting Sherman at a TV conference when the director was still in high school, producer Ari Lantos immediately recognized a visionary talent he needed to support—an artist whose background in editing and visual effects has been a boon to his storytelling in the sci-fi genre.
Approached for Sherman’s latest film by Lantos, Adams initially assumed that Sherman had to be in his 30s, with a number of films under his belt, with the vision and artistic command he demonstrated.

The newest horror musical Stage Fright (review) is poised for release, and we have the scoop! Starring Minnie Driver and Meat Loaf, this retro slasher is a great throwback for fans of Phantom of the Opera and The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
Dread Central: I don't know if you remember me, but I was a huge supporter of your short film, The Legend of Beaver Dam. I love it so much! So I am wondering... when you got the backing to make a feature horror musical, why not go with expanding on The Legend of Beaver Dam?
Jerome Sable: Even though we made The Legend of Beaver Dam first, the idea for Stage Fright actually preceded it. Batalion and I knew we wanted to do a slasher film at a musical theatre camp, but we realized we would probably need to make a short film first, before anyone would back an entire feature.

The Wagner/Cuban Company's Magnet Releasing, genre arm of Magnolia Pictures, announced today that they have acquired U.S. rights to Stage Fright , a genre-bending horror/comedy/musical that's set to make its world premiere in the Midnighters section at this year's SXSW Film Festival. Stage Fright is the feature film debut of writer/director Jerome Sable, director of the award-winning, festival favorite short, "The Legend of Beaver Dam." Director: Jerome Sable
Writer(s): Jerome Sable
Producer(s): Serendipity Point Films’ Ari Lantos, Jonas Bell Pasht.
U.S. Distributor: Rights Available
Cast: Minnie Driver, Meat Loaf, Allie MacDonald and Douglas Smith
As we revert back to his brilliant 2010 short The Legend of Beaver Dam as an indication of better and bigger things to come, while this horror musical Stage Fright (shot in September of ’12) remains in post, its director has soaked himself in more red corn syrup. We could feasibly getting two Jerome Sable films in ’14 with his participation on the ABCs of Death 2 omnibus.
Gist: Minnie Driver plays Kylie Swanson, the enigmatic and haunted star of the Broadway stage, and mother of siblings Camilla (MacDonald) and Buddy (Smith) who find themselves at the centre of the unfolding horror at the camp. Meat Loaf plays Roger McCall, the fallen-from-grace Broadway producer turned camp director.

We first discovered Jerome Sable when he broke ground with the Sundance accepted short, 2010′s The Legend of Beaver Dam. When there was no mention of Stage Freight for September’s Toronto Int. Film Fest, I mentally circled Sable’s name for a mention in the Sundance ’14 program. With an almost guaranteed certainty, the fully fledged filmmaker and accomplished film composer with a good number of shorts under his belt has a brand we can call his own. This horror musical (shot in September of ’12) stars the ensemble that can belt out the tunes as well in Minnie Driver, Meat Loaf, Allie MacDonald and Douglas Smith.

Director/Writer: Jerome Sable

U.S. Distributor: Rights Available
Cast: Minnie Driver, Meat Loaf
Jerome Sable’s is definitely the least well-known among the wealth of Quebecois film talents breaking out with a film this year, but if you asked anyone who is lucky to have viewed his Tiff/Sundance selected short The Legend of Beaver Dam, you’d know that he is excellent when it comes to the funny bone, showed a lot of poise in his comic timing, has already perfected the merger of two genres that historically never fitted well. His daunting directorial debut described as “Scream meets Glee” goes by the name of Stage Fright and once again see Sable work with his creative sidekick Eli Batalion as the co-film composer. Sable will likely pack his suitcase for a long film festival tour.
