“So we’re down in Uvalde, right?” Anita Busch tells me in one of the lengthy, emotional conversations we’ve had this summer. She is describing the aftermath of the 2022 Texas mass shooting in which 21 grade-school students and teachers died. “I have the team down here in Uvalde for a fifth time. And we’re getting ready to head over to Nashville to help over there,” she says. “As soon as we hit the road, I get word that there’s been a mass shooting at the outlet mall in Allen, Texas. So we divert over there instead.”
Back in the late 1990s, when Busch was a leading entertainment journalist, her points of reference all centered around Hollywood: “Paramount.” “Fox.” “CAA.” But this is her road map now: “Uvalde.” “Orlando.” “Allen” — scenes of the unthinkable yet increasingly commonplace mass-casualty shootings that have thrust the country into a seemingly unending cycle of terror,...

Denver — Facing criticism from families of victims of the Aurora movie theater shooting, officials handling the distributions of donations are consulting with a mediator who oversaw compensation for victims of the Sept. 11 terror attacks and the Virginia Tech shooting.
An email sent to victims' families said that Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper's office, the 7/20 Committee and the Community First Foundation have initiated discussions with Kenneth Feinberg and plan to meet with him Friday in Denver.
Feinberg was traveling and couldn't immediately be reached for comment.
The mass shooting killed 12 people and wounded 58 others. Former University of Colorado, Denver, graduate student James Holmes has been charged in the July 20 attack.
Last week, the families of 10 people killed and at least a dozen of those wounded called on Hickenlooper and lawmakers to appoint an independent arbitrator to oversee distribution of the donations.

Aurora, Colo. — Family members of some of those killed or wounded in the mass shooting at a suburban Denver movie theater want Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper and other lawmakers to use their influence and move a $5 million victims' fund out of the hands of a private group.
They made the plea to have the money overseen by an independent arbitrator at a news conference Thursday that was markedly less emotional than one last month in which they demanded a say in how the $5 million is spent.
Tom Teves, of Phoenix, whose son, Alex, was among 12 people killed in the July 20 shooting, said the families have learned that the Giving First will be able to keep interest earned on money in the fund and plans to spend some money on mental health care for victims. But the families want the money given directly to them and have local, state and federal...

On Wednesday, Gov. John Hickenlooper responded to criticisms that he -- and the Community First charity that he recommended, which manages the Aurora Victim Relief Fund in question -- received from Aurora shooting victims' families saying that his office is now going to take a more active roll in the process.
"We're all heartsick that this process that was supposed to help repair some of the emotional damage has been so painful," Hickenlooper said to The Denver Post. "Until yesterday I had not heard that some people had received nothing."
The Aurora Victim Relief Fund, through GivingFirst.org, has raised over $5 million, however on Tuesday the families of those who lost their lives in the Aurora theater shooting tragedy said that they've only received $5,000 each and that they've had no say in how the rest of the money is distributed.

Survivors and the families of the Aurora shooting victims are speaking out about what they perceive is a financial aid process that has actually done more harm than good. In an emotional press conference this afternoon, the group criticized the 7/20 Recovery Committee, an organization made up of volunteers from government and community organizations, for failing to ensure that the $5 million in donations collected for the Aurora Victim Relief Fund was disbursed to those who needed it most. "We are here because we want the public to know what's been going on behind the scenes," said Tom Teves, who lost his son Alex in the shooting and is acting as a spokesman on behalf of the families. Families of those killed or injured in Colorado shooting say they have been not been consulted over how to spend the $5m cash
Families of several of the 70 people killed or injured in the Aurora shooting in Colorado have launched an impassioned attack on local bureaucrats who they say have denied them a voice over the $5m relief fund raised after the tragedy.
Family members of 11 of the 12 who died in the shooting on 20 July joined relatives of some of the injured at a news conference in which they disclosed increasingly rancorous relations between them and local organisations purporting to help them. They complained that although the funds had been raised to support victims and their families, they had been entirely cut out of decision-making process over how the money should be used.

Phoenix — An Arizona man who was among the Colorado movie theater shooting victims was cremated this week, as his father remembered him as having a gift for defusing tense situations and a "heart of gold."
Alex Teves and 11 others were shot and killed Friday in Aurora, Colo., at a midnight showing of the latest Batman movie, "The Dark Knight Rises."
Services were held Thursday in Denver for another victim, Micayla Medek, 23.
Teves, who grew up in Phoenix and graduated from an Arizona high school and college, died while shielding his girlfriend from the gunfire. His father, Tom Teves, said his wife did not get a chance to say goodbye before their son was cremated because he didn't want her to see the badly wounded body.
"He was one of the kindest kids who always gave of himself," Tom Teves told the Arizona Republic. "You won't find anyone who has a...

His hair dyed a shocking comic-book shade of orange-red, the former doctoral student accused of killing moviegoers at a showing of the new Batman movie appeared in court for the first time on Monday, but he didn’t seem to be there at all. James Holmes shuffled into court in a maroon jailhouse jumpsuit with his hands cuffed — the first look the world got of the 24-year-old since the Friday shooting that left 12 people dead and 58 others injured at a packed midnight screening of The Dark Knight Rises.

His hair dyed orange-red and a dazed look on his face, the man accused of going on a deadly shooting rampage at the opening of the new Batman movie appeared Monday in court for the first time. An unshaven, handcuffed James Holmes, 24, sat in maroon jailhouse jumpsuit as the judge advised him of the case. Holmes sat motionless, his eyes appearing tired and drooping. At one point, he closed his eyes as the judge spoke. Prosecutors said later they didn’t know if Holmes was on medication. Authorities have said he is being held in isolation at the jail.
