Liverpool are in Spain preparing for tonight’s daunting Champions League showdown with Real Madrid, knowing that a victory would arguably be the most unlikely triumph in the club’s history. Brendan Rodgers’ side are in extremely poor form, both domestically and in Europe, while Carlo Ancelotti’s star-studded team are scoring goals for fun and are the current champions of Europe. They key question is: has there ever been a game the Reds were less likely to win since the competition’s inception in 1992?
The 2005 Champions League Final is probably a good place to start. AC Milan, managed by Ancelotti at the time, had a ridiculous amount of talent in their side, whether it be Cafu and Paolo Maldini at the back, Andrea Pirlo, Clarence Seedorf and Kaka in midfield or the brilliant Andriy Shevchenko up front. Not many gave Rafa Benitez’s Liverpool much hope,...

Fulham host Southampton as the Cottagers aim to pick up their fourth win under Rene Meulensteen.
Team News
Fulham’s main injury concerns lie with John Arne Riise (hamstring) and Fernando Amorebieta (knee), who are both doubtful.
New signing Lewis Holtby could make his debut, if his paperwork was filed in time, but Greek striker Kostas Mitroglou will definitely not feature after missing the registration deadline.
Southampton will be buoyed by the potential return of Rickie Lambert and Victor Wanyama.
Lambert had been out with a hamstring problem, while Wanyama had been absent due to a hairline fracture in his leg.
Key Stats
Southampton have not won a league game at Fulham for over 60 years.
Fulham are on a poor run of form, having lost four of their last five matches – conceding 15 goals in the process.

Sheffield United put Fulham to the sword this afternoon and will be disappointed to have not emerged victorious.
Chris Porter gave the Blades the lead after 30 minutes but at the beginning of the second period the Blades were reduced to 10 men as Michael Doyle lashed out. With eight minutes to go Rodallega sent the game to a replay with a clean strike.
Hugo Rodallega had an early chance to give the visitors the lead but he headed Giorgos Karagounis’ header just over the Sheffield United crossbar.
Fulham were forced into an early change as John Arne Riise makes way to be replaced by Plumain, Damien Duff moves to left-back.
As the rain picked up Jose Baxter had a good opportunity to give the Blades the lead from a free-kick in a central area but his strike caused no real danger and went the wrong side of the post.

Dimitar Berbatov put the transfer speculation surrounding his future to one side as he inspired Fulham to victory over Aston Villa at Craven Cottage.
The Bulgarian nonchalantly scored a penalty to add to Steve Sidwell’s 21st minute strike, allowing the Whites to secure a valuable 2-0 win – their first in seven Premier League games.
Fulham started the game brightly and had an early penalty claim turned down on 7 minutes after Berbatov appeared to be pushed in the box.
Moments later the Bulgarian was involved again, this time forcing Brad Guzan to tip his header onto the bar from Alexander Kacaniklic’s dangerous corner.
Aston Villa almost took the lead against the run of play as Christian Benteke flashed a header wide, following some good wing play from Gabriel Agbonlahor.
15 minutes in and Fulham came even closer to breaking the deadlock, Kacanaklic twice having good efforts blocked...

Sunderland have added another name to their huge list of incoming players tonight with the loan signing of Napoli’s Andrea Dossena, reports Daily Mail.
The Italian left-back does not appear to be part of Rafael Benitez’ plans so has been given a potential route out of Italy by signing up to manager Paolo Di Canio’s Sunderland project.
Dossena – a former Liverpool player – joins fellow Anfield alumni and international compatriot Fabio Borini, who signed for Liverpool last year as the first arrival in the Rodgers revolution but has struggled to break back into the first team after struggling with injury.
The Liverpool left-back represents Di Canio’s 14th signing of the transfer and is seen as something of a coup for the Black Cats’ firebrand manager – the 31-year-old was originally slated to sign for Serie A side Torino last week, before deciding on another attempt at the Premier League.

Tottenham Hotspur blew a great opportunity to extend their lead over Arsenal and consolidate their third place position in the Premier League in a forgettable match at White Hart Lane.
Spurs started brightly with man of the moment Gareth Bale back in the side and the Welshman immediately looked lively, getting in on the action from the off.
A couple of early corners were awarded to spurs as they pressured Fulham and it was Bale’s header from Gylfi Sigurdsson’s in-swinger that was cleared off the line – the first real chance of the match in the 6th minute.
A quiet spell ensued, as the match became somewhat disjointed, in which neither team seriously threatened for some time, but it was a spell in which Fulham did seem to grow a little in confidence.

The Independent believes that Chelsea and Tottenham are on red alert after it was revealed that Willian could move to the Premier League for around £20m. The Brazillian playmaker shot to prominence in Shakhtar Donetsk’s Champions League campaign.
The Newcastle exodus looks set to continue, according to the Daily Mirror, as AC Milan are interested in highly-rated ‘keeper Tim Krul and 22-year-old full-back Davide Santon. It’s thought unlikely that Massimiliano Allegri will be able...

The 2011-2012 Premier League campaign was one of the most exciting seasons in years with thrilling derbies, shocking moments and new Champions crowned. And it is with this that Martin Jol’s Fulham side managed to prove doubters wrong and survive the relegation battle and finish in an amazing ninth place, on the same points as Liverpool. However, with the new season just around the corner, many sides are looking at the individuals that were part of the successful Fulham side.
As always with the new season on the horizon, this is the period of the footballing calender of which new additions are made to sides. And Fulham boast some of the most exciting prospects in England right now. Clint Dempsey, 29, enjoyed one of his best seasons yet in a Fulham jersey, scoring 17 goals in 37 appearances and if that wasn’t enough, he’s not even a striker by trade.

Philippe Senderos netted in the dying minutes as the hosts came from a goal down to condemn Wigan to their first defeat in two games.
The visitors headed into the match filled with confidence, having earned back-to-back wins after beating Manchester United and then Arsenal on Monday night.
And they took the lead just before the hour mark courtesy of an Emmerson Boyce strike, the defender’s fifth goal since joining the Latics in 2006.
However, Wigan’s lead was short-lived as January signing Pavel Pogrebyank drilled home just a minute later to level the score.
Moments later, the Russian international hit the crossbar before going onto strike the post – underlining the home side’s frustration at not being able to grab a goal.
And as it looked like the tie would end all square, former Arsenal centre back Philippe Senderos produced a bullet header in the 89th minute following John Arne Riise’s fierce free-kick.

Fulham are a difficult prospect. At the minute they are the epitome of a mid-table club, sat in 14th with unspectacular goal stats and without too many outstanding talents in their team, Martin Jol’s men will have been disappointed to go out of the Europa League in what looked an easier group. But, the Europa is a challenging competition, in terms of the effect clubs’ participation can have on league form and fitness, and coming into the end of the season, and with the clubs below him increasingly desperate for points, Jol might well be happy to have left the competition behind.
What Jol needs to consider is whether he and his paymasters will be happy with a season spent in mid-table, after last year’s European qualification, and how he can affect the second half of the season to change things. Very simply, that means winning more games,...

Michel Vorm was once again the hero for Swansea City after his master class display between the posts to ensure Swansea City another three points at home. The Dutchman was on fine form for the Swans, preventing numerous goalscoring opportunities for Fulham including a late penalty taken by Clint Dempsey.
There were multiple changes for both teams’ starting eleven. Brendan Rodgers had obviously taken notice of the impressive substitute performances from Luke Moore and Wayne Routledge at their defeat to Blackburn last week with both players making the starting XI. Steven Caulker also returned for his first game since picking up an injury at Arsenal in September.
For Fulham the changes were forced due to injury. Danny Murphy was expected to make a recovery for the game but failed to make the bench. Bobby Zamora was another notable absence as Martin Jol decided to rest his England international with Andy Johnson...

It’s often said that the best teams can play poorly and still come away with three points. That’s a cliché of course but it proved relevant today as Tottenham came away with a 3-1 win over Fulham at Craven Cottage, despite their opponents having the better of the game. Two own goals, one from Chris Baird, the other from Younes Kaboul,a fine effort from Aaron Lennon and a Jermain Defoe goal ultimately decided the day. A good win for Spurs, but Fulham can count themselves very unfortunate indeed.
So Martin Jol against his former club. The Dutchman did a good job at White Hart Lane, but Daniel Levy decided he’d see if Juande Ramos could do a better job without the courtesy of sacking Jol first. He learned his lesson though when Ramos’ reign was ultimately short-lived and a tad topsy turvy. Tottenham have been walking...

A slow Sunday of football culminated in a turgid clash between Fulham and Blackburn that ended in an uninspired draw. Neither side would be happy with the 1-1 result, both desperately needing a win but having to settle for a point after two spectacular goals from Ruben Rochina and Bobby Zamora which stood out against a backdrop of dull football. Junior Hoilett picked up what looked like a serious injury in the last minute to add further misery to the display.
A win for West Brom earlier in the day meant that this game at Craven Cottage was fought between the bottom two teams in the league, with Blackburn and Fulham picking up a solitary point between them in their opening three games. Things seemed to picking up for the London side though, with new £10 million signing Bryan Ruiz in the starting line up along with long term absentee Bobby Zamora,...
