The introduction of the UK’s Independent Film Tax Credit (Iftc) has been hailed as a momentous turning point for the local film industry. From April 2025, the Iftc will allow eligible films budgeted under £15m to opt-in to claim enhanced Audio-Visual Expenditure Credit (Avec), at a rate of 53%, on their qualifying expenditure, which equates to around 40% in relief.
However, questions still remain about how the new credits will work in practice, with concerns ongoing for producers about raising financing and escalating production costs.

Shades of Blue creator Adi Hasak didn’t mince his words when discussing the state of U.S. television at the EFM’s Berlinale Series Market today.
“America is a disaster zone right now,” he said during a panel on entrepreneurial showrunners. “Nothing is working.”
His comments come after a bruising year in the U.S., where most major media companies have been forced into layoffs and some have engaged in content write downs that the creative community has taken hard.
Hasak – best known for creating the Jennifer Lopez-starring NBC drama Shades of Blue — also took aim at Disney, noting it has just laid off 7,000 staff and claiming its current strategy is akin to “a mental breakdown.”

It’s proving to be a pivotal few weeks for the £7 million ($9.77 million) U.K. Global Screen Fund (Ukgsf).
Launched earlier this year by the Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (Dcms) and the British Film Institute (BFI), the fund is widely seen as the U.K. government’s replacement for the money disbursed by Creative Europe’s Media program, which ceased once Brexit came into effect.
A one-year pilot, the Ukgsf is designed to be a new source of international distribution, business development and co-production coin for U.K. companies in the film, TV, documentary, animation and interactive sectors.
The ambition is that the Ukgsf helps U.K. indies spread their wings on the global stage, not just with partners in the EU but with other international territories as well.
Earlier this week, former All3Media exec VP of corporate development Denitsa Yordanova was named as head of the Ukgsf.

Other notable nominees include Promising Young Woman, The Trial of the Chicago 7, The Father, Saint Maud and Minari. Murphy is in good company, with fellow nominees for the prize including Thomas Vinterberg for Another Round; Lee Issac Chung for Minari; Chloé Zhao for Nomadland; Jasmila Žbanić for Quo Vadis, Aida? and Sarah Gavron for Rocks.
It is the first time in BAFTA history that four women have been nominated in the director category.
These are the first edition of nominations to follow BAFTA’s seven-month diversity review, which came about after it faced significant backlash one year ago for a lack of diversity among nominees – including an all-male director category.
