Before this decade, the idea of a network dropping an entire season on one day was not a serious one. Episodes aired week to week, occasionally back to back, and so it went — until streaming services made clear that they were willing to tread a different path. Suddenly, it seemed, TV’s release calendar featured more and more shows releasing a slew of episodes all at once, banking on keeping the audience’s attention with “bingeworthy” content. While exciting at first, this shift eventually started to flatten seasons out in a way that kept episodes from shining in and of themselves. Assuming that a viewer would rather marathon a show than consume it sporadically, many shows leaned into interminably stretched narratives and a frustrating lack of urgency.
That’s why highlighting particularly great individual chapters of shows feels even more relevant for a retrospective of this decade in particular. It...

The Leftovers, Season 1, Episode 9, “The Garveys at Their Best”
Written by Kath Lingenfelter & Damon Lindelof
Directed by Daniel Sackheim
Airs Sundays at 10pm Est on HBO
Well, that was a neat trick.
Not the final reveal, no, that is something that (I hope) will become almost beside the point. But what I’m really talking about is the episode itself. That is something that I did not expect the show to pull off so well this late in the game.
Nine episodes after the fact, we are now getting who Tommy is and what he means to Kevin. We get what Jill has lost. And we see where Kevin’s head has been at, and where it might go, all in an absorbing, if necessarily stuffed hour. This flashback to flesh everyone out is absolutely invaluable as we head into the finale and the second season. It is also pivotal...

The Leftovers, Season 1, Episode 6, “Guest”
Written by Damon Lindelof & Kath Lingenfelter
Directed by Carl Franklin
Airs Sundays at 10pm Est on HBO
“I’d like to remain Nora Durst,” Nora (Carrie Coon) says toward the beginning “Guest,” and that perfectly sums it up. She will get a divorce, but she doesn’t want to fully let go. Here is a woman taking no bullshit with her actions (her husband was a cheater, and so that relationship must end), but would “like” to hold on to who she was before the Sudden Departure, buying the same groceries she had in stock that day her family disappeared, over and over. Except she can’t. It’s eating her alive. And what we get to witness from this conflict is the best, clearest story The Leftovers has told by far.
This episode actually did so many things right in so many places, but...

The Leftovers, Season 1, Episode 2, “Penguin One, Us Zero”
Written by Damon Lindelof & Kath Lingenfelter
Directed by Peter Berg
Airs Sundays at 10pm Est on HBO
While the pilot was almost pure set up, and in this mostly disappointing second episode we have a further muddling of that set-up, what has at least become clearer now is that despite its literary origins, The Leftovers is definitely shaping up to be, for better or worse, Lost’s direct successor.
There are no extended flashbacks (although there are flashbacks), no smoke monster, no strangers in an isolated setting, but the structure of a supernatural mystery, and tiny character advancements while interacting sideways with that mystery, is still intact. Also, in a way, people in The Leftovers—neighbors, whole families—have become strangers to each other, even if they weren’t before. Characters like Laurie and Tom have taken on new personae in this brave new,...

Blogcritics.org has an eight-page interview with Kath Lingenfelter (Caprica 1x05, "There Is Another Sky"), who is working on House these days. Snippet:
How did you come to write for the series?

Though it seems almost certain that ABC won't be ordering any more episodes of Pushing Daisies, Bryan Fuller, the TV show's creator wants to assure fans that the colorful story isn't over yet.
Pushing Daisies tells the a pie-maker (Lee Pace) who can bring people back from the dead, his previously-deceased girlfriend (Anna Friel), his detective partner (Chi McBride), and a collection of other colorful characters played by Kristin Chenoweth, Swoosie Kurtz, Ellen Greene and Jim Dale (the show's unseen narrator).
Last night, at the Paley Center for Media, series creator Fuller, executive producer Peter Ocko, and most of the show's writers gathered to talk about Daisies. Those on hand included Gretchen J. Berg, Chad Creasey, Dara Creasey, Abby Gewanter, Jim Gray, Aaron Harberts, Lisa Joy, and Kath Lingenfelter. Quite naturally, the series' uncertain fate was front and center of everyone's mind.

HBO led all TV networks in attracting nominations in the 60th anniversary WGA Awards, fetching two noms for dramatic series writing and three for comedy series writing.
In the dramatic series category, HBO's The Sopranos and The Wire are joined by Showtime's Dexter, NBC's Friday Night Lights and AMC's Mad Men.
In the comedy series category, HBO attracted noms for Curb Your Enthusiasm, Entourage and Flight of the Conchords. Also nominated in the category are NBC's The Office and 30 Rock.
Conchords also attracted a nom in the category of new TV series, where it joins Mad Men, FX's Damages, ABC's Pushing Daisies and Comedy Central's The Sarah Silverman Program.
The WGA's recent news releases have dealt almost solely with its ongoing strike against some of the same companies figuring in the WGA Awards. The guild had planned to release its TV and radio noms today but released the information late Wednesday without previous notice.
"In order to maximize press coverage for the 2008 Writers Guild Awards as well as not compete with Golden Globes' nominees ... we made the decision to go out a day earlier than previously announced," WGA West spokesman Gregg Mitchell said.
Globe noms were released this morning.
