Portland-based indie rock trio Menomena are back with their first new release in over a decade. Stream their surprise three-track EP, The Insulation, below.
The Insulation rotates vocalists on each of its three songs; Danny Seim sings the title track, Justin Harris takes the lead on “Copious,” and Brent Knopf is responsible for the vocals on “Caravan.” As Pitchfork points out, “The Insulation” and “Copious” were separately released in 2010 as B-sides for their album Mines, but were not on streaming until now.
The title track is immersive and sprawling, building in multiple lengthy instrumental breaks. “Copious” picks up the pace with a more playful rhythm, while “Caravan” closes things out with a reverberating, glittering atmosphere.
While Menomena never officially broke up, Knopf did leave the band in 2011 to focus on other efforts — including linking up with The National’s Bryan Devendorf for a project called Pfarmers — making The Insulation his...

It’s 7 a.m. in Venice, and Matt Berninger has already been up for four and a half hours. Why? The National frontman and his wife, Carin Besser, are still polishing up songs for Cyrano, a years-long musical project based on the 1897 play about the life of a 17th-century French writer. Besser, who writes best at night, had been working on the songs until 2:30 a.m., at which point Berninger woke up and spent the dark hours of the morning finishing up what she started.

Going from “Bob’s Burgers” to “Central Park” was a great fit for Loren Bouchard. Drawn to both family stories and songs, it became a natural progression to embrace a Broadway-style animated musical, with co-creator Josh Gad, devoted to the community within Manhattan’s beloved park. The Apple TV+ series thus contains a sense of spectacle and diversity that work well in animation.
“A musical felt like a natural next step for us, and I’m an old fart so talking about trees and flowers and public space also appealed,” Bouchard said. “The epic scope of it sort of emerged and evolved as we were working on it. We like telling stories about underdogs who find themselves in a position to save their world. But with Central Park, that world is pretty big — so the scale keeps creeping up.”

The songwriting credits for the new Apple TV Plus animated series “Central Park” include a veritable who’s who of American female singer-songwriters stepping out of tune-land and into toon-land as guest writers, with Sara Bareilles, Aimee Mann, Fiona Apple, Cyndi Lauper and Meghan Trainor among those represented.
None of their voices will be heard on the show— that’s left to a voice cast that includes executive producer Josh Gad, Leslie Odom, Jr., Kristen Bell, Kathryn Hahn, Tituss Burgess, Daveed Diggs and Stanley Tucci — but the list of talent the show attracted just as songwriters is bound to draw pop fans’ interest.
Other top-rank names contributing to the songwriting come from the worlds of theater, film and TV composing, including Alan Menken and Tony nominee Glenn Slater. The bulk of the songs, however, comes from the show’s core writers, Kate Anderson & Elyssa Samsel (“Olaf’s Frozen Adventure”) and...
