Sophomore slump? Not for Saint Laurent Productions.
One year after a high-profile splash with its debut film project — Pedro Almodóvar’s gay cowboy Western Strange Way of Life — the luxury house’s production division returns to the Cannes Film Festival with three starry films in the main competition: Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Perez, David Cronenberg’s The Shrouds and Paolo Sorrentino’s Parthenope.
Saint Laurent creative director Anthony Vaccarello is credited as a producer on the pics, and he and his team delivered cast wardrobes. Emilia Perez stars Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez and Édgar Ramírez in the story of a lawyer who receives an unexpected offer to help a feared cartel boss disappear by becoming the woman he’s always dreamed of being.

Netflix and “Elite” creator Carlos Montero have reteamed on the new medical drama “Breathless,” and Variety has been given exclusive access to new first images from the show.
“Breathless” is produced by Montero’s El Desorden Crea and executive produced by Montero and Diego Betancor. David Pinillos and Marta Font shared directing duties, working from screenplays by Montero, Carlos Ruano, Guillermo Escribano, and Pablo Saiz.
Alongside today’s photos, Netflix released a new synopsis for the show: “The Joaquín Sorolla is much more than a public hospital in Valencia where lives are saved every day. Doctors and residents work their fingers to the bone in the frenetic pace of the emergency room, where tensions, emotions and even desire accelerate the hearts of a staff that lives increasingly on the edge. The arrival of a distinguished patient highlights the complicated situation of the public health system, lighting the fuse for what...

Manu Rios made his way to Mexico last month to attend the Platino Awards, held for the third time in 11 years at the Gran Tlachco Theater at Xcaret Park in Riviera Maya. Rios, a breakout star from the steamy Netflix series Elite, was among a long list of boldfaced names to make the trek to the starry show which honors the best in Ibero-American content across film and television.
Ahead of the ceremony, at which J.A. Bayona’s Society of the Snow swept by winning six trophies including best film, The Hollywood Reporter sat down with Rios to talk about life after Elite, meeting real-life doctors for his forthcoming medical drama Breathless and why he’s considering a move to Los Angeles — at least a temporary one.

J.A. Bayona’s Netflix epic Society of the Snow swept Saturday night’s Platino Awards, picking up a total of six trophies including the top award of the night for best Ibero-American fiction film.
Bayona’s film follows the tragic events that take place after Uruguayan Air Force flight 571, chartered to fly a rugby team to Chile, crashes on a glacier in the heart of the Andes in 1972. Only 16 of the 45 passengers ultimately made it out alive as a handful of others perished on the mountain during the 72 days from the time of the crash until rescuers arrived.
Bayona also made his way to the stage to accept a trophy for best director, and his film’s haul also included best male performance for star Enzo Vogrincic, best editing for Jaume Marti and Andres Gil, best cinematography for Pedro Luque, and best sound for Oriol Tarragó, Marc Orts and Jorge Adrados.

“Ok, I can die now.”
So said a woman seated behind The Hollywood Reporter inside Mandalay Bay’s Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas, host of the inaugural The Netflix Slam. She had just snapped a selfie that captured superstars Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz warming up on center court over her shoulder. Sure, it was a dramatic statement but it wasn’t obscene for such an occasion. There’s no shortage of gasp-worthy moments in Sin City, and there’s no doubt many of the 9,489 seated guests could relate to the sentiment.
The Sunday afternoon showdown, the latest in Netflix’s push for live streaming events, pitted two superstar Spaniards in an exhibition match that could be one of the final few times they meet across a net. I say this with great regret because it’s been several incredible years in which I’ve met wonderful actors, we’ve worked with all the directors we wanted to work with and we’ve had the luxury of having Maribel these last two seasons. Pedro Almodóvar’s canon abounds in nimble, yet edgy, remembrances of things past. In Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, All About My Mother, and Volver, he paid homage to the language of melodrama while crafting his own version of it. Those and many of his earlier films are pervaded with a humor toward the power that the most basic elements of drama have when pushed to their aesthetic, emotional, and formal limits.
Lately, though, Almodóvar’s work feels less bent on metatexually displaying his technical adroitness than his increasingly softer look at memory. Julieta, Pain and Glory, Parallel Mothers, and even his 2020 short The Human Voice are less fixated on accentuating the theatrical than stewing in nostalgia. And if his new short, Strange Way of Life, is any indication, each subsequent work in his filmography is proving the broth is losing a layer of flavor.

Are you looking for intrigue that will keep you gripped episode after episode? Muted has absolutely all the quality elements to keep you glued to the screen all weekend long.
Muted (2023) About the series
First five minutes of perfect execution, with hardly any dialogue, all cinema: a girl on a bicycle, the city in semidarkness in short shots and a slightly illuminated window. From the top of the building, a human body is thrown or tossed, shattered before the astonished look of a woman.
A hooking beginning.
Then we meet a mysterious character who keeps silent and begins his probation. Barely ten minutes have passed and Aitor Gabilondo gives us, shot after shot, a lesson on...

Every time two cowboys point their guns at one another on screen, there’s something homoerotic at play. Hollywood Westerns may be loath to admit as much, but not so Pedro Almodóvar, who casts Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal as lonesome cowboys reunited after 25 years in “Strange Way of Life.” Commissioned by Saint Laurent Productions (which is also premiering a Jean-Luc Godard short at Cannes), this half-baked half-hour serves as a sexy showcase for creative director Anthony Vaccarello’s latest designs, while barely delivering on the promise that an Almodóvar-made “gay cowboy” movie conjures in the imagination.
At the Cannes premiere, the Spanish director described “Strange” as his response to a question posed by “Brokeback Mountain”: What can two men do on a ranch? Silva (Pascal) gives Jake (Hawke) his answer in the final seconds of the short, and it’s sweet, though it turns out Almodóvar is misremembering Ang Lee’s 2005 Western.

Whether Pedro Almodóvar is expressing regret over turning down Brokeback Mountain all those years ago, continuing to dip his toes in English-language projects after The Human Voice or reclaiming the place of gay cowboys in America’s Old West, I am here for it and most definitely won’t be alone.
Premiering in a Special Screening slot in Cannes, Strange Way of Life (Extraña forma de vida) runs a skimpy half-hour but packs that fleet running time with greater depth of feeling and evocative atmosphere than most directors manage in a full feature. Stir in smoldering turns from Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal and you get a flavorful bite to be savored.
How Sony Classics will maximize the commercial theatrical potential of a film running the length of a TV episode remains a curious question. But the potent combination of two gifted lead actors and a director who’s among...

This year’s Cannes has its first crowd-pleasing winner, even if Pedro Almodóvar’s “Strange Way of Life” is technically not a feature-length film.
Starring Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal, the 31-minute western concerns a cowboy riding across the desert to visit a lifelong friend who realizes that his old pal wants to be more than friends. The short feature marks Almodóvar’s second English-language offering following the 2020 feature “The Human Voice” starring Tilda Swinton.
Judging by the immediate post-screening response, next year’s Oscars may have a front-runner for Best Short Film.
Speaking previously on the Dua Lipa podcast, the filmmaker stated that “it’s a queer Western, in the sense that there are two men and they love each other. It’s about masculinity in a deep sense because the Western is a male genre.”
He continued, in sentiments that echoed his post-screening conversation on Wednesday, “What I...

It’s no secret that Pedro Almodóvar flirted with the idea of directing “Brokeback Mountain” in the early 2000s, the flamboyant Spanish auteur understandably convinced that Annie Proulx’s gay cowboy drama could make for an ideal English-language debut. He eventually moved on from the project (as he recently explained to IndieWire), believing that his interpretation of the material would be more carnal and unashamed than Hollywood was then prepared to accept.
Almost 20 years later, Almodóvar is still trying to break through the language barrier and make an “American” feature of some kind, but the 30-minute “Strange Way of Life” — his second English-language short — finds him desperately trying to make up for lost time.
Tantalizing to watch despite boasting all the staying power of a stray tumbleweed, this chatty little Western reflects on the repressiveness of its genre while mining a rich vein of conflict from the mutual acrimony shared by its two lead characters,...

The great Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar is a rabid fan of the Western genre but until now he had never made one. He had also only dabbled in directing an English-language film with the exception of the 2020 short The Human Voice, which starred Tilda Swinton.
His latest movie is also a short, just 31 minutes, but he finally got to do his Western in English. It’s a nice homage to the form and those great directors who created it, but it is safe to say this homage could only have come from this master of cinema.
Almodóvar brought the finished product to its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on Wednesday and, if flattered by the attention, the ghosts of John Ford, Howard Hawks, John Sturges, Anthony Mann, Raoul Walsh and Sam Peckinpah may be surprised at the twist that this 73-year-old fanboy has given Strange Way of Life.

“Strange Way of Life,” the new short film from Oscar-winning director Pedro Almodovar, received its first trailer on Wednesday, weeks before its set to premiere as an out-of-competition title at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival.
The film, a queer Western that Almodovar previously said “could be my answer to ‘Brokeback Mountain,” stars Pedro Pascal and Ethan Hawke as a pair of gunslingers who reunite after years apart. Here’s the official synopsis Almodovar provided Cannes: “A man rides a horse across the desert that separates him from Bitter Creek. He comes to visit Sheriff Jake. Twenty-five years earlier, both the sheriff and Silva, the rancher who rides out to meet him, worked together as hired gunmen. Silva visits him with the excuse of reuniting with his friend from his youth, and they do indeed celebrate their meeting, but the next morning Sheriff Jake tells him that the reason for his trip...

"Years ago you asked me... what two men could do living together on a ranch." Pathe UK has revealed the first official trailer for Spanish master Pedro Almodóvar's latest film titled Strange Way of Life - which is premiering at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival this May. This is another medium-length film from Almodóvar, coming in under 60 minutes, very similar to his other "short" The Human Voice that he made with Tilda Swinton. After twenty-five years Silva rides a horse across the desert to visit his friend Sheriff Jake. They celebrate the meeting, but the next morning Jake tells him that reason for his trip is not to go down the memory lane of their friendship. It seems to be a romantic western - co-starring Pedro Pascal and Ethan Hawke as the two cowboys. The film's cast includes Manu Ríos, Jason Fernández, José Condessa, Pedro Casablanc, Daniel Rived, and Erenice Lohan.

Hawke is listed as a featured guest on the song “The Pink Seashell,” and the only guest on the 13-track album. Fall Out Boy — which consists of Patrick Stump, Pete Wentz, Andy Hurley, and the on-hiatus Joe Trohman — has promoted the album with two singles, “Love from the Other Side” and “Heartbreak Feels So Good,” released in January.

Elite Season 6 looks to be a cut above the previous two seasons.
The series has struggled to keep its focus since many of the original cast members exited at the end of Elite Season 3.
However, the official trailer teases the aftermath of Sam's death, new beginnings, and Isadora's vengeance.
It looks like plenty of drama is on the menu, which could be what the show needs to steer it in the right direction.
“After Samuel’s death, Las Encinas faces a new school year trying to have a facelift by covering up disasters of the past,” reads the official synopsis.
“However, the conflict in its classrooms is systemic: racism, sexism, domestic abuse or Lgtbi-phobia are just a few of the difficult issues that will run through the hallways of the prestigious institution this season."
"If those who run the system do not actively take action to address these issues, it...

Ahead of the premiere of Elite Season 6, the official social media accounts for the Netflix hit confirmed Tuesday that the show has been renewed for a seventh season.
Netflix shows rarely make it past their first few seasons, so Elite will be joining the likes of Orange is the New Black as one of the longest-running shows on the service.
Netflix has not confirmed the renewal, but given that the social media channel for the show has confirmed the cast of Elite Season 7, it's about as official as we'll get.
The most shocking part of the announcement is the news that Omar Ayuso, who played Omar Shanaa for the first five seasons, is returning.
No details have been revealed about what brings him back into the fold, but it's possible we might get some answers on Elite Season 6 (premiering November 18).
Additionally, it sounds like we're getting another major revamp for Elite Season 7.

Elite Season 6 gets underway later this year on Netflix.
The streaming service revealed a new batch of episodes will arrive on Friday, November 18.
"If those who run the system do not actively take action to address these issues, it will have to be the students themselves who do so.”
While the cast exits haven't been seamless in the slightest, Elite Season 6 is poised to be completely different.
Samuel (played by Itzan Escamilla) was seemingly killed off at the conclusion of the previous season, but there were some rumors that he survived.

Ethan Hawke has signed on to star in Pedro Almodóvar’s next film, “Strange Way of Life,” (“Extraña forma de vida”), a half-hour Western.
The Spanish director will shoot the short before making his English-language feature debut, “A Manual for Cleaning Women,” with Cate Blanchett.
Hawke stars opposite Chile’s Pedro Pascal, who portrayed Oberyn Martell in “Game of Thrones,” in a film which will be “another exercise of freedom in the line of ‘The Human Voice,’” said producer Agustín Almodóvar.
The short will be shot in English. Set up at El Deseo, the Almodóvar brothers’ Madrid-based production company, “Strange Way of Life” begins with a man, Silva, riding on a horse across a desert to Bitter Creek. He has come to visit Sheriff Jake. 25 years earlier, the two men worked together as hired gunmen.
Silva comes with the pretext of re-encountering his friend from youth. They celebrate their re-encounter.
