Black Rebel Motorcycle Club are hoping fans fuel up this summer on “Motor Oil Whiskey,” the rock band’s new, limited-edition collaboration with whiskey brand, Few Spirits.
Produced in collaboration with Few Spirits’ founder and master distiller Paul Hletko, the new whiskey blend features a bourbon finished in rum barrels, a bourbon finished in vermouth barrels, and a mesquite-smoked wheat whiskey, to create an expression as unique as the band itself.

The origins of band names are often fascinating, and many of them come from movie titles or elements of movies. Some of the best choices, in my opinion, are Black Rebel Motorcycle Club (from The Wild One), Mogwai (from Gremlins), Duran Duran (from Barbarella), Veruca Salt (from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory), The Misfits (from The Misfits) and The Dismemberment Plan, which comes from a line in Groundhog Day spoken by actor Stephen Tobolowsky as the character Ned Ryerson. I now have a new favorite band name origin, though, and it also involves Tobolowsky, years before his most memorable turn in that Bill Murray movie. It turns out, according to Tobolowsky himself, that Radiohead is pretty much named for his psychic powers. Dangerous Minds relayed the...

With the instantly recognizable pounding of the Ronettes' "Be My Baby" and one of the most brittlely distorted guitar lines ever put to tape, alt-rockers the Jesus and Mary Chain laid the groundwork for one of the most copied rock & roll sounds of the past three decades. It’s not long now before Brmc release their new live album/DVD, Live In Paris. It’s also accompanied by a documentary called 33.3%, made by Yana Amur, which will offer a look at the band behind the scenes. To any Brmc fan, this is just another chance to learn more about a band they love.
From first exploding on to the scene with 2001’s ‘Black Rebel Motorcycle Club’ all the way up to 2013’s Spectre At The Feast, the band have treated their loyal fans to a varied back catalogue that other bands would kill for. Oozing with creativity and a style they’re known for, there’s only one Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.
To some, their favourite band is that: a band. But to others, it’s a religion – Brmc just have one of those fan bases. These fans don’t just listen to the band; they live it.

In the last decade, left-of-center,"quirky" zombies have become so ubiquitous so as to reach critical mass. Just as many spoofs reach theaters as straight-ahead horror renditions. As with anything reaching its cultural saturation point, it’s the singer, not the song, and the results have been all over the spectrum, from the brilliant (“Shaun of the Dead”) to the forgettable (“Warm Bodies”). Despite significant talent both behind and in front of the camera, “Life After Beth” has trouble distinguishing itself. The film starts promisingly, opening with a foreboding shot of a girl wandering through Griffith Park, scored with ominous guitar squalls courtesy of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, who composed the film’s score, setting the tone for a film much weirder and more interesting than the one that follows. We learn that this girl was/is Beth (Aubrey Plaza), a high schooler who recently died in a hiking accident.

We’ve seen myriad interpretations of the zombie movie, we’ve seen numerous versions of the romantic comedy too, but “Life After Beth,” the new indie flick that premiered at Sundance earlier this year, joins "Warm Bodies" in the category of zombie romcom, a distinction that only a few movies in the zombie genre have achieved. Written and directed by Jeff Baena, the movie stars Aubrey Plaza, Dane DeHaan, Anna Kendrick, Matthew Gray Gubler, John C. Reilly, Molly Shannon, Cheryl Hines, and Paul Reiser. Our review says the movie features "a go-for-broke performance from Aubrey Plaza, and a funny supporting turn by scene stealer Matthew Gray Gubler," Also going for it is a killer soundtrack featuring songs by Can, Brian Jonestown Massacre, Neu! and an awesome molten lava droney/feedback-y score by the dudes from Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. A24 films will release the movie on August 15th in select theaters.

Director: Jim Jarmusch; Screenwriter: Jim Jarmusch; Starring: Tom Hiddleston, Tilda Swinton, Mia Wasikowska, John Hurt, Anton Yelchin, Jeffrey Right; Running time: 123 mins; Certificate: 15
One of cinema's most defiant rebels jumps on the vampire bandwagon, but never fear: he hasn't gone all the way to the dark side. Writer/director Jim Jarmusch (Broken Flowers, Coffee and Cigarettes) casts Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddleston as the bloodsuckers trying to fill their time after so many centuries, like a couple of urban slackers doomed to faff for eternity.
Killing isn't much of a kick, either. Instead, they get their O-negative on the black market, though Hiddleston (best known as Loki in the Thor franchise) has a bit of fun as Adam, drifting through hospital corridors with an incongruous stethoscope and sunglasses, creeping out the doctor who supplies him. He makes a living (so to speak) as a cult rock musician, but he's had...

On Kristen’s 23rd birthday, Rob took Kristen to Malo for a Mexican dinner. However, in addition to dinner, Rob showered his love with lavish gifts, according to Ok!
“There was the latest chain and bracelet set from Versace and a Hermès silk scarf,” an insider told the magazine. “He also managed to get ahold of an original vinyl copy of her favorite Van Morrison song, ‘Madame George.’”
How sweet is that?! But the gifts didn’t stop there. Rob saved the best gift for last when he gave Kristen a piece of jewelry that’s particularly close to his heart.

Bates Motel, Season 1, Episode 1: “First You Dream, Then You Die”
Written by Anthony Cipriano
Directed by Tucker Gates
Airs Mondays at 10pm Et on A&E
In 1987, a year after the second Psycho sequel hit the big screen, Universal looked to take the franchise to television by turning it into a weekly anthology series. This was not unusual for the time as the late 80s and early 90s churned out an abundance of horror related shows such as Freddy’s Nightmares and Friday the 13th. A television spin-off of Hitchcock’s 1960 masterpiece, titled Bates Motel, originally aired as a pilot but due to low ratings, producers shelved the idea. In early 2012, A&E announced that a new TV series also titled Bates Motel was in development; later on it was confirmed that the show was picked up for a 10 episode first season. However, it has nothing to do with the failed 1987 TV pilot.

Chicago – Is Michael Winterbottom’s 2004 curiosity little more than art house porn? It certainly would seem that way to any consumer who happens to glimpse at the film’s Blu-Ray case, which boasts that the disc contains the “full uncut explicit version” of “9 Songs.” There’s also a disclaimer warning that the film “contains sexually explicit content.” In the words of “Family Guy”’s Quagmire, “Oh…right.”
Like Soderbergh, Winterbottom is a versatile risk-taker who doesn’t shy away from courting controversy. From 1995’s “Butterfly Kiss” to this year’s “The Killer Inside Me,” the fearless filmmaker has utilized uncompromising depictions of violence and sexuality in order to plunge the audience headfirst into the psyche of his characters. In two of his best recent efforts, “Tristram Shandy: A Cock and Bull Story” and “The Road to Guantanamo,” Winterbottom has also proven his gift for blurring the line between documented reality and scripted fiction.

It's a big day for fans of comic books, high-adrenaline action, gadgetry, physics and Robert Downey, Jr. (which takes care of just about everybody), as it's the release day for "Iron Man 2." Downey stars as the titular Iron Man, the metal-suited super hero created by billionaire weapons specialist Tony Stark. The sequel to the 2008 hit again sees Jon Favreau in the director's chair and welcomes back Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts, while replacing Terrence Howard with Don Cheadle in the role of Lt. Col. James "Rhodey" Rhodes and introducing Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow and Mickey Rourke as the villainous Ivan Vanko. Can Stark keep the government out of his business? Can he overcome the threat produced by Vanko? Will the Avengers assemble? And is everybody way more excited about the trailer for "Super 8" than this movie? You'll have to visit your local cinema to be sure.
But before you do,...

So, you haven’t had your Monthly Music fill in what, two months now! How does it feel? Did anyone go to Canadian Music Week?
This month I’ve worked up a list for you that is perfect for your spring cleaning. From psychedelic rock to funk and pop, you’ll be moving and grooving straight into May. While some of us are cramming work and exams in to the last moments of the school year, others might be looking forlornly out of their window at the rain, waiting for something new to come along. Another great thing about this time of year is that concert season is kicking into high gear – bands are stretching their hibernated legs out and running to and from Toronto, so keep your eyes peeled and your ears close to the soundboard (not really)!
Three Toronto bands you should know:

Bad attitude makes for good rock Over the past nine years and five albums, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club has worked hard to craft a sound that’s both familiar and undeniably its own: slow-pounding drums, jagged and droning guitars, Peter Hayes’ dead-eyed vocals and the same too-cool attitude of that quiet dude at the bar who’s flipping through the jukebox, playing The Velvet Underground’s “Heroin” as if it’ll get people dancing....

Jared Followill has revealed his favourite music of this decade. The Kings of Leon bassist has included The White Stripes, Radiohead and Arcade Fire as his top picks of the last ten years. The 23-year-old told Rolling Stone: "[The White Stripes's White Blood Cells] was around the same time and had kind of the same feeling as The Strokes. We were just forming our band, starting to write songs and finding our own identity. We had so many older influences, that to have a band come out just as we were making our band, who seemed to have so many similar influences and had similar music to what we were trying to make just kind of gave us the confidence to do it. "The Strokes, The White Stripes and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club: all three of those records really pushed us to continue. The White Stripes have a lot less melody than the Strokes, but...

[1] New Moon, as anyone frequenting any type of mass media would probably know, is the second part of the filmings of Stephanie Meyers' Twilight Saga. This part, directed by Chris Weitz, has its release on November 20, and apparently the soundtrack sizzled as it hit the audience. The New Moon soundtrack is more expansive in styles than its predecessor. Again responsible for the song choices is musical supervisor Alexandra Patsavas, and it seems she has been destined to lift several bands out of obscurity and into the mainstream. Acts such as Grizzly Bear and Lykke Li are present, having previously been cult status performers. Carter Burwell composed the score for the previous movie, but this time the Oscar nominated Alexandre Desplat of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and The Queen fame is in charge. One has to admit that Patsavas has compiled a pleasing combination of styles. None of its...

The Twilight: New Moon soundtrack. So, there’s a second film about sexy boy vampires, and although you might have expected another twelve songs of emo bleurgh to go with it, it turns out those feisty little vamps and vampettes have grown out of all that noisy melancholy riff-rock and now have a taste for Thom Yorke, The Killers, Bon Iver, and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. They grow up so fast.
The soundtrack album to the first Twilight got the ball rolling with Muse, Paramore and Linkin Park, so seeing Mr Yorke turn up here is something of a shock (a Thom Yorke track was used over the end credits of the first film, but was not included on the soundtrack. Since then Mr Yorke has presumably decided to embrace the Twilight series with open arms – expect many songs about kissing perty vampire boys on the next Radiohead album). Evergreen...

The "Twilight" soundtrack — featuring music from Paramore, Linkin Park and some guy named — has, to date, sold nearly 2.3 million copies in the U.S. alone and has been a rare bright spot for the music business in these dire times (well, it and Taylor Swift albums).
Compared with Taylor, the "New Moon" soundtrack — which was rush-released on Friday (October 16) to combat early leaks — boasts contributions from the likes of Thom Yorke, Lykke Li and Grizzly Bear (not to mention a first single from Death Cab For Cutie), is pretty dark. It is, as I wrote earlier this week "Music for the masses — or at least the masses who wear glasses and own record players and bought tickets to the Pavement reunion."

Every great romance needs a great soundtrack. So one huge problem I had with Twilight (other than the overacting, terrible script, and all the screaming fans around me in the theater) was the music. This movie was part of a pop culture sensation, and the filmmakers had the chance to entwine the romance on screen with some amazing tunes to culture its pre-teen audience. “Flightless Bird, American Mouth” by Iron and Wine was really the only standout track on the soundtrack to me, while Paramore and Linkin Park seemed like obvious choices for the time in which the film came out, and while these bands added to the angsty feeling of teen romance, they just didn’t do it for me.
Luckily, the film’s sequel, New Moon, looks like it’s got a killer soundtrack in the works. Most of the choices are a bit surprising, like Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and Grizzly Bear,...
