That single word can define my experience watching this little girl. The choice to just give her an idea of what the scene was (at least that's my assumption), rather than script her, was absolute brilliance. The end product becomes what every actor strives for; believability. The viewer has much more of a sense that they are unraveling Roy's story at the same pace as Catinca's character, and I believe, to a degree, we are. Credit is due to Lee Pace as well, though, as his interactions with her during the ad-libbed parts were very genuine and natural; he was simply telling a girl a story, and, being that she is very young, and English is not her native language, he has to stop to explain certain things to her. I felt as though if the cameras were off, their rapport would have remained the same.
All of these elements led to what is probably the single most emotionally connected performances I've ever seen in a feature length film that wasn't a documentary. However, at some points I almost forgot it wasn't a documentary, production value aside. Everything about Catinca's performance was just so.....believable.
